I started on the cheap. Went to Bee Source Gorum and got the hive dimensions and bought the wood to build them. Built 8 swarm traps and caught 9 swarms. 1 absconded on me. Bought unassembled frames and foundation. You can start for less than $1000.

Looks like it was a nice day in the bee yard.😁 Have a Happy New Year.👍 My opinion as a 2nd year beekeeper going into their 3rd, find a mentor before you get bees. But if you get bees first just work the learning process to it's fullest. Expect losses and set backs, in most cases those are the most instructional lessons if you study them and move forward.

Excellent addition! (Good) mentors are an exceptional resource, and are hard to find. Get to them club meetings people! It is easier to find a mentor when you are engaged and participating. Also: they are being generous with their time, be generous back!

Exactly Jake! Beekeepers are naturally short on time as they are tending to their own colonies. Should a beek find some time to help you, be sure to help them back! Cheers!

Meant Forum, agree to join local bee clubs they can be helpful and set you up with a mentor.

Good advice but totally the opposite of what I did! I did, however, read books and watch alot of KZitem videos before and after getting my bees. A little obsession goes a long way!

I too learned going solo: work and schedule prevented me from attending the area clubs when I started, so a lot of reading preceded getting bees. I also started as a top-bar beekeeper, which is a pretty lonely path in this region! It would have been loads easier with someone who knew what they were doing!
