The Haligan is the back-packing and hiking tool! In fact my mom keeps one handy in her purse!

I carry a Paratech pry axe in my truck at all times. I also carry a Spax SP16. When I served I became very use to have a Spax around almost all the time. So once I left the service I purchased one specifically for my truck. When it comes to saving lives you really want to have trusted gear around.

Victorinox Rescue Tool: What you showed is the belt cutter blade. The saw for windshields is the next tool in it.

SPAX was designed to escape out of aircraft---not a very good woodsy tool---but good enough for breaching and breaking building stuff. Apocolaxe----I have this---rough made but works okay for woodsy more---sheath needs be kydex Better tool I found is the Truckers Friend.....kinda like cross between both above--sheath still sucks for the Friend though

Yeah it has some of the same "geometry" as a Kukri if you look at it and imagine cutting away some steel you can see this shape at the cutting side. Curved steel coming in at an angle actually cuts better, as does an angle so that's why Kukris cut and chop well, some blades have bellies and guillotines have that angle to get a slicing effect. Some axes have a straight cutting edge but many have a curved one. Both can work but I suspect the curved is better all things considered. You almost have to see it for yourself with say a side by side with a Kukri and a heavy chopper with a straight cut blade about the same size, the same weight. The weird looking Kukri wins! The Spax probably wins or does very well. Sure some straight cut blades work great but I'm saying curvature and angles usually are better and curvature creates angles. In my opinion based on some experience. I will admit the Woodsman's Pal is pretty straight but still great. But...I think a big Kukri might chop better but I love that Billhook on the pal! Clearing brush and undergrowth and not just chopping, it wins there.

I've thought of grinding a Spax at the spike into a Billhook, sharpening one edge, as a diy competitor to a Woodman's Pal... partly because I think they're cheaper... Stay sharp!

Thermal lance. And porcelain for window. I find it quite odd they literally never use porcelain on any glass breaker. It’s moronic and seems they don’t really want the public knowing it’s literal magic like properties. It’s truly incredible. I’m pretty sure an infant could take out a window with ease.

agreed when I was a teen someone told me about this and I took a piece of spark plug and chipped a piece of porcelain off of the plug and threw onto a junkers windshield and just as you say it was magic.

i assume porcelain only works chipped, alas people would cut themselves with it and you'd need a fitting for the porcelain in the tool that could handle many different chipping shapes and sizes.

Why is it porcelain so magical for breaking glass? Is it because of its hardness?

The SPAX is absolute garbage. I had gotten one when I was in the Army and was using it for some cutting/chopping and the spine cracked on it and eventually it all broke apart because it was garbage cast metal!!

I remember firefighter 1 training back when I was younger and the Halligan bar is about as serious as non-powered gear gets. It's not pretty, it is heavy but it will break just about anything man-made 👍🏾

Glass Breakers are useless in cars. 2018 Federal Regulation, all new cars have to have shattered proof safety glass on all four sides. Secondly you made a mistake with the Victoria Knox rescue tool. That is not the glass cutter that is the seat belt cutter the glass cutter looks like a saw on that tool. Thirdly you can use the lmf Striking pommel with the knife still in the sheath. Personally I carry the Victorinox rescue tool, the Gerber LMFII and a Schrade SCAX5 axe that also has a pry bar on the end. The SCAX5 is designed in a way that you can punch through metal and then use it like a can opener to cut through thin sheet metal.

Wished you had compared the Trucker’s Friend. Otherwise, great comparison of tools! Also wondering why you chose handled prying tools over traditional crowbar/pry bar/wrecking bar?

6:50 that is a seatbelt saw. The glass one is the thicker one, curved outwards, not inwards

X Shears and Colonial Knives Rescue Hook, same company makes the M-24 Paratroopers knife. Switch blade and shroud cutter that fits in your pocket. Other option is the Emerson Knives N-SAR (US Navy Search and Rescue Knife. Webbing cutter, serrations anf the point is rounded like trauma shears.

Thanks for flexing your very lightly used and expensive tool collection. Your theories concerning the practical applications of these tools seem well researched.
