So my girlfriend is currently undertaking a PhD in Plant Pathology, specifically fungi. She’s studying how climate change is causing fungi such as aspergillus and fusarium graminearum to migrate into new climates, but also infect Humans. Previously, the fungi she was studying only infected immunocompromised humans. We’re now finding out that they’re starting to infect healthy people, and the prevalence of which is increasing at an alarming rate. So yes, some strains of fungi have mutated and have already begun to infect healthy people. Ten years ago, The Last of Us seemed like an edgy story. Now it’s a premonition of epidemiology for the next half century. What’s worse, is that we have absolutely no cure for fungi infections, except for the fungicide we are currently using in hospitals. We also use these same fungicides to treat crops out in the field, which are now entering our water supplies, causing the rate of immunity these fungi have to speed up. Yes, you read that correctly. We’re now recommending to farmers, particularly in the West Midlands region to wear eye protection and masks to avoid the aspergillus spores. So yes, shit is about to get real.

This is unironically the best moment in the show, which isn't me knocking the rest of it that's just a testament to how effective the scene is. John Hannah's performance as Dr.Neuman, despite being relatively brief, is *chilling* purely because of how matter of fact he is. The crowd initially laughs at his suggestion that fungus would be the infection that could end humanity, but then he slowly lays it all down. He explains how dangerous and horrific a fungal infection is in insects, while also explaining the downright miracilous abilities fungi have to spread and keep their host alive for as long as possible. And there's a brief sigh of relief when he concedes that no fungi can survive in a host if their body temperature is too high, hence why none have jumped to humans yet. There's simply no need. But once he brings up the idea of global warming and how THAT could potentially cause a fungus to evolve in order to jump to humans, and it goes from purely fictional to real world horror, the music and the crowd goes dead silent as he explains how absolutely *facked* humanity would be in that scenario PS: Please do note that I understand that this is, at the end of the day, a TV show and there are specialists who have debunked the udea of a zombie apocalypse like this happening However, real infectious disease specialists have cited that the generql sentiment of the show is relevant. Fungal Pandemics are a threat that's growing along with the threat of global warming. Especially since making anti-fungal drugs is not only expensive, but also difficult due to how easily it could harm human cells too
@FlyJonat
5 ай бұрын
Sure in that theory a fungus could survive temperature that is slightly warmer, but considering that wheat (infected food in the show if I remember well) is rarely eaten without any cooking involved, I doubt the spread would be as big. A oven at 350F would probably kill the fungus because the change in temperature is too big.

@@h3aveNsHaZe the point i think he was getting at is that it doesn't matter if the fungus evolves to slightly surpass the 94 degree body temperature as most uses of wheat in food involves cooking it at far higher temperatures. Don't be afraid. Fear is a reaction that is only useful in so much as it can affect a change in circumstances. The scenario as I describe it here is not one that can be so altered. Fear or fearless alike will result the same. So, have no fear. It won't change anything.

Let say this is real. Why exactly is it impossible to treat it?

That is the one thing in the speech that is incorrect. We have plenty of antifungals today. It could be treated and would not spread like a zombie horde. Also, they take a bit of dramatic license on evolution. It is typically not this fast or this neat.

while some slower growing fungi will take millions of years to evolve,,,, ,,thousands of faster growing fungi have already been found to have evolved and adapted to a warmer environment !!!!!

The intro is great for giving a ''plausible'' explanation for the premise of the show, but somehow a ton of tards equate that shit to it being realistic. No, it's not. For a fungus to be able to control a human, you'd need to bypass a ton of hurdles. Besides, the human would die because of blood poisoning before we even get to mind control anyways. The liver can't stand it.

Yeah zombies in real life aren’t really possible. The closest thing to it is rabies and you’ll die of rabies in a few days
