Bay Area residents woke up Wednesday to a strange, almost apocalyptic orange-red sky that became even more ominous later in the morning as smoke from multiple fires across Northern California continued to smother the area.
Many are probably wondering, does this mean it’s unsafe to go outside? Not necessarily, said Jarrett Claiborne, an air quality meteorologist. In fact, the air quality index (AQI) for most of the Bay Area is at moderate levels, which means the air quality is acceptable and only a small number of people who are unusually sensitive to air pollution may have some health concerns.
“The good thing about it is most of the (smoke) is staying aloft,” Claiborne said. “The sun is able to scatter those smoke particles that produce this apocalyptic orange color that we’re seeing.”
