There's nothing like a pot of pole beans and new potatoes cook together with bacon grease and salt and pepper. Makes my mouth drool just thinking about them. I'm 67 and remember helping my grannies pick the beans and she'd scrape the new potatoes and throw them in a pot. Your right in saying they just don't taste the same nowadays like they did back then. Love the stories and histories.

Greetings Brother Jared and Kin Folks. I can remember back in 1968, we had supper with a mountain neighbor and his family. For dessert, the lady of the house sat a big ole pot of beans on the table and pulled a rectangular pan with chocolate cake, no frosting. She put a square of cake in a bowl and topped it with a big spoon of beans. I'll try anything once. 😋 It was actually Delicious. It's the Salty/Sweet combination like popcorn and sweet chocolate. To this day, when cooking beans, there's usually a chocolate cake to scoop my beans on to. Give it a try if you don't already do it. 😋 😋 😋 😋 😋 😋 😋 😋 😋 😋 😋 😋 😋 😋 😋 😋 😋 😋 😋

Something I learned as a young girl was the saying, "Eating high on the Hog," meant eating from the top of the Hog where the tenderloins were. The lower down on the pig, the less quality of the meat. This applies to beef as well.

My uncle told me about a courting ritual back in the old days in the mountains. If a fella was courting a gal, and they went somewhere a horse back, the girl would sit in the saddle, and the boy would sit behind her and reach around her to rein the horse. When they married, then the man sat in the saddle, and the woman sat behind him on the the horses croup and put her arms around his waist. ( Probably the origin of the backseat driver )

I was around 5 when I started sitting on the kitchen counter, 'helping' my Grandmother while she fixed some of the best food I've ever had. The recipes were all in her head, memorized as they were passed down to her. The food wasn't fancy, but it sure tasted great and you didn't walk away hungry. She never had the time to write recipes down, and told me to 'listen at her' so I could cook when I was grown. I listened and watched. She used the same bowls, utensils, pots and pans she had used for 50 years. Some pots were missing handles or lids, but it didn't matter to her. Grandmother never threw away a skillet, cornbread pan, boiling pot or bean pot. There was a blue crock bowl for bacon grease sitting on top of the stove. My mother said that same grease bowl had been sitting on the stove since she was a little girl. Grandmother poured every drop of bacon grease into that bowl, then took some out as she needed it. Her green beans and new potatoes, cooked with some salt pork and grease from the blue bowl, tasted absolutely delicious. I follow her directions like she told me and showed me, but my cooking just doesn't taste the same. I think Grandmother's recipes she shared with me so long ago belong only to her, the blue crock grease bowl, and to those old pots and pans she used.

I remember my step grandpa telling me when I was around 11 years old, how he would hobo a train to go see his girlfriend that he eventually married. He would ride the train from Bath county Kentucky to Carter county Kentucky which was 2 counties away. I would love to hear him tell his old stories. I got to meet his father in law when I was around 12, and that old man showed me and dad a $5.00 gold coin that he kept wrapped in tissue in his wallet. He didn't let me hold it, but he gave me a good look at it, it shined ever so pretty. I would say that old man was born back around the civil war time, and I don't know the year of the coin or how he got it, but I sure remember it.
