That was probably an Army Ranger that you saw. US Army, Camp Merrill is around 3 miles South to South East of Hawk Mountain Shelter. Early one morning, a squad of Rangers came through camp on a land navigation mission. There were helicopters flying around all day.

When I was on my way to Gooch shelter, I saw several Osprey flights throughout the day. While at Gooch shelter, I heard a firefight in the distance around 11:00 at night. Pretty wild to hear rapid fire at that time - even wilder to think of the gear they must have had for a nighttime firefight.

I'll start by saying that Ive been hiking (sections of the AT and many other places} since about 1984. Having said that, I didnt quite understand why it would be so strange and scary to ask another hiker questions about where they intend to go that day as polite conversation. I understand everyone has their own comfort levels, but what else would you talk about? I'm not exactly chatty on trail, especially uphill, but aside from hello, on your left, and where ya headed?... Usually followed by cool, im headed to.... was thinking about camping at.... have you heard good or bad about?... But I come from a different time with different experiences I suppose. Which is where Im going with this. Not everyone has the same take on the same subject so dont jump to conclusions too fast.

That does not sound like a hunter. The Army does a lot of training through that part of the AT. He probably was not upset about seeing you, he probably was on a timed training mission and was a little stressed about his mission. During the hotter months they (the Army Units) usually leave a tank of water at Copper Gap for the hikers.

Me and a buddy were hiking in the Mogollon Mountains of southwest New Mexico during a light rain. We came upon a thick bramble and spooked a mountain lion which took off at a fast run away from us. Less than a minute later a fully and thoroughly camouflaged bowhunter stepped from behind a tree just a few dozen yards from us. It was amazing how well he blended in. He may have been mad about scaring away the cat, but he was friendly after my partner and I highly complimented him on his camouflage technique.

You were right to move fast and protect yourself because you CAN'T know what type of guy he was. @@BigIronTexas if someone with Becca’s experience is shaken up by the interaction, there probably was something very off with it. It’s weird how you can get the same questions over and over, but one person can still get the hairs rising. Better to trust that instinct.

@@BigIronTexas those aren’t ordinary questions to most women. They’re invasive and threatening. Women have communicated this to men, here’s a perfect example, and yet men just brush it off and make excuses, rather than recognizing womens’ points of views and adjusting their behavior.
@andymytys
Жыл бұрын
@@BigIronTexas thru-hiker to thru-hiker sure, people heading in the same direction might as how far the other is planning on going, esp. when two people are departing in the morning and gauging their plans against someone else’s as a sort of sanity check. But to ask someone if they’re hiking solo, and then follow that up with questions about where they’re going to camp - that too does happen - but it’s an uneducated question at the very least, given the feedback that’s out there. Go talk to some women hikers. You’ll be surprised at what they do and feel - things that you’d probably never consider. For example, I don’t know a lot of male hikers that wait to even come near a road until they can’t hear any traffic, because they don’t want to be seen by anyone that they’re in the area and alone. Lots of women hikers I’ve talked to do this. I was shocked when I heard it, and again when I heard it over and over again from different women. There are all sorts of things women hikers do differently to feel comfortable in the woods. Words matter to them, and being aware of what words and phrases cause anxiety and avoiding them is just the right thing to do. Explaining why it’s no big deal or “normal,” is not, especially when you’re not a woman. If you’re a long-time watcher of Becca’s videos, she’s hit-hiked, accepted offers from strangers to spend the night in their homes, etc. If she says that there was something weird going on in an encounter that made her uncomfortable, I have no doubts that she was not over-reacting.

That is one awesome camera you are using. The videos are really like in high definition crystal clear images. I thought rntul and unicorn had good camera equipment. But I think your videos are of higher resolution. I cannot wait for the next 7 years to fly by until I can retire. Then hopefully my son will be retiring from the navy by then and he will join his old dad on a thru hiking adventure on the AT. In the meantime I will be trying to do section hikes as I am finally back living in beautiful northeast Tennessee living only about 48 miles from Hampton and Watauga lake where the AT goes through by laurel falls. Then I am also living only about a 70 mile drive from hot springs,nc so I will be trying to get over there to do some hiking on the AT later on in September when I get my new 22 days of vacation. It would be amazing to go hiking on the AT in western nc during early to late October when the leaves are beginning to change into their beautiful fall colors. It is simply beautiful up in the western nc and northeastern tennessee mountains during the fall season. Maybe I could take 2 weeks to go from around cisby tn up through hot springs an on up into erwin and town mountain before ending up in hampton, tn by laurel falls.

@@andymytys I did some research and it looks like you have a point. Most of the hunting I’m familiar with is deer and we are required to wear blaze orange for safety. The video does not provide lots of details so the Hunter/Ranger option is still a possibility to me.
@andymytys
Жыл бұрын
@@JASHJustASectionHiker I think Becca’s encounter is definitely related to military exercises, based on the location. I just wanted to mention the turkey hunters for awareness. I’m about to go into the National Forest near where I live and anyone I happen to run into in a ghillie suit will definitely be hunting turkey. I’ve never seen them wearing blaze orange, probably because the volume of hunters is super low compared to say whitetail deer season. Between how accurate your shot has to be, how low to the ground a turkey is, and hunting with a bow and arrow as opposed to a gun, there’s very little chance of accidentally hitting a person walking through the woods.

Could be, but checking whether a girl’s got company and where she might camp tonight (how far she’s going) overlap with the kinds of questions that guys with ill intent “interview” lonely girls about. I’m on your side and on hers. Just reading the script it doesn’t seem that bad but we’re missing context here and something obviously felt odd or off enough to spook her this time. Unfortunately in this world, I’d rather listen to that intuition and be a little impolite to someone, than downplay it and end up in an unsafe situation.

Since you are walking through Georgia and points North, you ought to at least be carrying Bear Spray (and it needs to be quickly accessible), stupid not to, works fine on smaller predators as well! Consider getting firearms training and carrying a Pistol where legal.
