Brenden and I woke up at Boulder Campsite, named due to the extremely huge boulder we slept under at Elk Meadows, and both had slept great, it was a foggy morning. I first went to the big dead tree to get our food bags down and since there was so much weight being held up, the string had made a groove in the tree and my carabiner stuck to it. I had to surrender the paracord and carabiner but I promise to back someday to retrieve it. As I rolled up the tent, I noticed a brown slimy dirt stuck to the bottom of the tent and the ground.. as i got close to it, yep.. human poop. Someone pooped right in the middle of the campground and partially attempted to bury it but it was flush with the ground.. we weren't the first campers to sleep on this fresh poop. It was sad, and wrecked me. Luckily we had a bunch of wipes and toilet paper and a bathroom nearby at the parking lot junction so we cleaned the tent off completely but man..what a rough start to the day! I don't know how we didn't smell it last night, i guess it was covered. But anyways! Got up and started the day with a great breakfast and up to Mount Rogers, the highest peak in Virginia. The boreal forrest was so mystical and alive. It was beautiful and filled with mossy green life. We summited early and then came back to the trail. We hit the 500 miles mark which was a big milestone and so cool to accomplish. The rain began and it started coming down strong with wind. One of the most beautiful parts, the Grayson Highlands, was completely whited out and unable to see any views! But we did get a special appearance from the wild horses. They were hidden in the trees and I basically serenaded them to the trail, it was a truly magical experience. We had fun hanging out with them, I could've spent a lot of time admiring them and observing them. But we continued on through the storm. There were some decent scambles, boulders, and rock faces to climb around and tunnels to climb through, overall a really cool ridgeline and mountain. We had some fun and started trail running towards the end and made it around 4 pm to Brenden's vehicle where he had steak, dinner rolls, and mashed potatoes waiting in a cooler for a magnifcent dinner. He cooked it up on his tailgate and we enjoyed my best dinner yet! Said our goodbyes and he restocked me with everything he had which was so kind. I went on to Hurricane shelter and stayed there for the night with more rainfall. It was one of the greatest experiences reuniting with Brenden after 26 years, one of my coolest stories on trail.
