I lost my mother at 16, and I was by her side when she died. I've had to take years of therapy to not blame myself, to cope with the loss of one of the best things in my life. I had to cope with the fact I'll never see her again. But hearing shit Henry said had my blood BOILING. I hated the whole "they're in a better place" I was fed when my mom died, and hearing it here made me just as mad.

There is nothing anyone can say that can comfort you in that moment. And people dont know what to say in that moment. So they say usual things they heard people say in such case. When your parents die, especialy mother, you realize that now you dont feel like a child anymore. Even grown up people. Whilst mothers are alive you can talk to them, tell them anything, ask for advice. Even if she cant help. At least she's there. But once she's gone you cant have that anymore. Honestly, I’m happy for the OP when she eventually divorce is Henry.because people like this to show their true colors in bad situation.the fact that Henry looks down on his deceased mother-in-law refuses to comfort or support his grieving wife, but instead dismisses her feelings, talking about how she’s overreacting it is nothing more than a selfish greedy narcissist him trying to use his superstitions as an excuse to not go to his mother-in-law‘s funeral I’m just generally showing no empathy or remorse heck, even has the audacity to contact his wife, telling her to get dinner started and never bothers to even try and comfort her while she’s suffering. The loss of your mother even tries to throw a bit of emotional manipulation using her mother’s name just the sheer audacity of this guy.on top of that The moment he hears about his mother-in-law again he basically looks down on her only to realize that she may have something of value Monetary to him and he immediately tries to pull the we’re married, so whatever you get for inheritance is also mine bull crap honestly good riddance this is a heartless, selfish greedy, narcissistic jerk bag.

That beginning encapsulates very well what it feels like having lost a loving mother. I lost my mom quite suddenly, and I didn't really get to say goodbye because she wasn't conscious in the end. Part of me is glad for that, as she was very afraid of death, but it also created a lack of closure. Meanwhile, what Henry said just sounds like trying to bring too much logic to a very emotional thing. Even if it's true on some level, it's emotionally cold, especially when the death is so fresh and the daughter was so close to her mother. Also, I can agree with disliking funerals and I also dislike graveyards, but Henry and some others seem to miss the point entirely. A funeral isn't for the dead, it's for the living left behind. I guess it's better sooner than later when you find out someone who is supposed to care for you can't and/or won't support you through rough times. Hard times are difficult enough to manage without someone who not only doesn't help but actively makes things worse.

Ok henery was doing alright at first then he got to the "good death" and just lost me. I've had people tell me "you shouldn't be sad" or "they are in a better place" and tbh I got mad at first but then I took a step back and actually thought about it(before just going by emotions) the reason we always smile after funerals is bc we should be happy they don't have to suffer we sit around in a circle and only think about the positive, funny things that made us laugh/smile when that person was alive. There is no need to be sad be happy bc that is what the deceased would have wanted. I see a lot of people saying that's part of the reason why they got mad etc and I can't tell yall how to feel but do you really think your loved ones want you to be mad at people who are only trying to help? At least they aren't like henery and didn't show up. Do you think your loved one wants you to cry/be sad? That's the point of people saying they are in a better place or dont be sad bc what they say is true you being mad at them or the world isn't going to bring them back it's really not itll just bring you more pain and you wouldn't want to sully their memory so the best way to send a loved one off IS in fact to smile and dont be sad I know some people won't agree and that's fine but I've learned that the best way to say farewell is with a smile bc I know one day we will meet again.

The biggest problem is she focuses it on the husband saying goodbye. What she needs is her husband to be there for her during her grief. I actually do agree with his arguments as a general rule. To me the person is gone and lives in my memories. The body is a shell and isn’t the person. I don’t need a funeral to say goodbye. So funerals have little meaning for me. However, I am not afraid of dead spirits. Now changing mind due to inheritance then changes things. If you are going to have a legit fear of death, I can understand. But he is just shallow.

Ok so Henry was actually trying to help in the beginning. In fact what he said wasn't really wrong. The only thing that may be a little insensitive was saying it was a "good death" IN THE BEGINNING. The rest is definitely insensitive the whole "bad vibes" thing and refusal to go to the funeral is rude and gross.
@WPFLAWLESS

Idk something about saying 'is that so' after your heartbroken spouse tells you their mother passed away didn't sit right with me. Not only that but telling her "my mommie said I can't go to the funeral" and "me going won't bring her back" didn't give me that impression.
@MarshaLove0723
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was okay with him until he got to the 'good death' too. I was done with him when he started that "my mommy said" crap and wouldn't go. It doesn't matter so much what his MIL had done for him in life, and it wouldn't even matter if she had been mean to him and he hated her - he should have gone to the funeral as support for his wife.

I'm a believer in the existence of supernatural beings, and I can say for certain that Henry's actions did exactly the opposite of what he was trying to avoid. Shunning his wife is exactly what drew the bad mojo to him that he was so afraid of. The number one rule of my belief is that you NEVER use the existence of spirits as an excuse to avoid your responsibilities in the mortal realm, especially when you hurt others in the process. They are there to help support you in your support of others, and do not appreciate being used for purely selfish reasons. If Henry really was afraid of bad vibes, he could have helped himself in other ways...wearing the right charm to the funeral, getting a cleansing ritual done before or after (or both), or saying a prayer of protection.

Putting the life of the living first before the ones who are dead is normal. That is why people support the SURVIVORS in their time of grief. There’s also nothing wrong with doing one’s duty as a son or daughter, but duty to one’s spouse is extremely important as well, especially in this kind of situation.

Texts at the start moved me and Henry's reply made sense - If someone is living with great pain daily, it is best to let them go. But then Henry went completely off the rails. Wonder if he will have the same attitude when it is time for HIS mother. I seriously doubt it.

Unfortunately there are trash excuses for humans like Henry and his mother IRL! And people? Stop telling people "they're in a better place now!" That is cold comfort for anyone suffering for a loss! If you can't think of what to say, just think of how your friend/co-worker/acquaintance is suffering and just be a decent human being to them! Even if their parent was the worst person in the world, your friend/co-worker/acquaintance needs comfort from you! Sheesh! It never ceases to amazes me how even THAT MUCH is beyond most people!

Is he a kid? I've had paranormal experiences since i was a kid but i've still attended a funeral even though i barely knew the person that died as he was a family member that i've met only once. If he's so worried about "demons" he could've gotten himself some items to ward off evil like an evil eye or similar items especially for someone who 's done a lot of things for him and that's very close to him family wise

Both of my parents have passed. I'm 48 y/o and I still feel like an orphaned little girl, as I'm sure most people who have lost either or both parents would feel. Hearing this guy, not only disrespect his MIL and his wife, but to not even feel saddened by the loss or comfort his own wife, is disgusting.

I don't know how I would have reacted if anyone had talked like that to me after either of my parents' deaths or my husband's. My parents were, at least, old. But my husband was only 65. I was not up to doing anything after his funeral. If my church hadn't provided a luncheon, I don't even know that I would have eaten that day. I went to bed when I got home because I was drained emotionally.

I lost my dad in 2012, and despite his phobia of funeral homes, my husband came to my dads calling hours, offered his condolences to my mom and the rest of my family. My father-in-law was his friend, and also offered his condolences. I gave my eulogy at the funeral service, and I thought I completely bombed, but my mom, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles and cousins assured me that I did a good job, even though I got tongue tied. My mom thought it was good for me to distract myself and take my mind off of it, by playing a video game. She told me the same thing when my father-in-law died two years ago while I was on the phone with her about the sad news. She said, "For now, try to distract yourself to take your mind off of it. Watch a comedy or play a video game." Through my sniffles, I said, "Well, I was playing Fallout 3." After my father-in-law's funeral service, we went to his favorite restaurant and had lunch. Nothing fancy; just a pizza and some chocolate cream pie, with bosco sticks as an appetizer.

I lost my mother just over seven years ago, she was 93, sadly my wife was unable to come to the funeral as her visa had expired and she couldn't get a replacement in time, but she had helped me care for my mother. I was pleased that I had been able to take my mother to visit her sister, that was less than one week before my mother's death.

While the end of pain is a good thing, that does not mean you want to hear it! Also, my father's funeral was during the polar vortex in January 2015. We received apologies from my in-laws, as it was considered unsafe for them to drive that distance unless it was absolutely necessary. My mother and I agreed, the last thing we wanted was another funeral! But my husband came.

So. He couldn’t be there for a woman that was there for his mom when her husband died, but neither one of them can be bothered to be there for her and her daughter. But as soon as money is involved the very same woman suddenly becomes the most important person to him and his mother. Make it make sense. Money is more important than human life. You can even overcome the fear of demons and dying to acquire it. Hmmmmm, interesting. 🤔

I have been to a funeral 3 or 4 times since I was a kid to adult last time I lost my mom. My sister and I were disheartening grief for our mom. This (ex) husband said like nothing emotional support to his wife she needed him to be there as mortal support. He talked and the guilty trip about her mom pissed me off and blood boiled up. Don't ever say like these to who grief. Shame on him and his mom. Who cares if her lost mom is rich or poor? Her life is none of your business.

My father died several years ago. I didn't make it to the funeral due to health and lack of money. However, I did go and visit him while he was in hospital because my FIL gave me the money to do so. It was a very uncomfortable flight, and I had to deal with some unpleasant people, but I was happy to be with my Dad for that time. I told my mother that I wouldn't have the funds to attend the funeral (we knew it was just a matter of time) and she was in agreement that there wouldn't be anyplace for me to stay or anyone to pick me up at the airport. I spoke to him for the last time a month later while he was hospices at home. He died 20 mins after I hung up.
