There's one thing that wasn't mentioned in this video, and it's very important. As these new iPads were announced, all existing iPads' prices bumped up about 20% up - at least in my country in Europe. So while I was delaying my buying decision in order to wait what will Apple announce, I have immediately ordered iPad Air from the last eshop, which didn't raise the price, so the difference between Air and 10th Gen iPad was roughly 64$, that was a no-brainer at the moment.

Price increases in the EU is due to the strength of the USD recently... not Apple. If Apple doesn't do this, they open the door to mass arbitrage... where people buy massive numbers of iPhones in one country, smuggle them (or legally import if it's worth it) and resell them. Also, you have to add up ~10% to US prices in many states as sales tax isn't included and varies from region to region. I was in Japan in June and picked up 2 iPad minis and an Apple watch and prices across the board were about $100-300 cheaper than the prices in the US as the JPY had collapsed and Apple hadn't adjusted their pricing yet. They updated pricing July 1st, so I'm glad I didn't delay. Pro tip: they usually wait until a new product comes out to adjust pricing... although that move in Japan was due to unusual currency spread changes. I'm not into arbitrage, but I'd be lying if it didn't cross my mind to buy a bunch of iPhones Pros and resell them.

At today's mid-market rates, that's $468 USD. ~£17/$19 premium... about 4% Apple usually takes takes the x-rate and raises the price to the nearest logical price point to hedge against future currency changes... so 479 GBP (After VAT) becomes 499 GBP. Occasionally, they'll go lower, but only when currencies are stable and the GBP is anything but stable. I didn't check for other prices in the EU, but on the whole, most EU currencies are volatile (for Russian reasons) right now... so I'd expect most companies that set their base price in USD to add a hedge for possible future currency changes.

Regarding the use-case for iPad Air vs base iPad: iPads running software called ForeFlight are the #1 tool for pilots. They even showed ForeFlight on an iPad during the 2021 iPad event. The iPad mini is most popular among pilots who don’t want a huge iPad, or who have smaller planes with less room, but for those that can handle the bigger screen, the iPad Air is the best option. Why? One huge huge factor: it’s the cheapest full-size iPad with the anti reflective coating on the screen. Yes, you can buy aftermarket anti glare shields, but these often provide undesirable results or dim the screen too much. The anti reflective coating on the iPad Air, mini, and pro series is perfect to allow the iPad to be usable in a cockpit.

@RandomFandomOfficial

There's a reason for that though. One, it's probably cheaper to make. Two, if you break the glass... the non-laminated screen might be just fine and you could replace only the glass for less. That makes it a better choice for certain people like kids (who often may be clumsy and break stuff easily).

@@Jay-kc1ql It is interesting you bring up the pencil as that would probably be the scenario in which people would most likely notice it. Lamination makes the device thinner (not too important IMO), boosts screen brightness, and helps with the overall image quality. I would say if somebody went to an apple store and they could not tell between the ipad air's screen and the ipad's then they should totally save their money and buy the base ipad. Now I know somebody is going to argue that there are more things that separate those devices than just their screens. But back to your point, would it matter it to casual user? If you think it would then I do not see why the screen wouldn't.
@joseespinoza2687
Жыл бұрын
@@RandomFandomOfficial Oh yeah, it is for sure cheaper to make. They probably realized that if they made it laminated, the ipad air would have no reason to exist. The biggest differences between the two are the screens and 2nd gen pencil support. Remove one of those an you are basically paying $150 more to use a 2nd gen apple pencil with your ipad air. They got lazy with their up market ipad offerings this year and had to cripple their 10th gen ipad somehow. Like the pro doesnt even have the landscape camera. As for it being a better choice for kids, I would say because they left the 9th gen in the range, the 9th gen is actually the better choice. With the money you save you can buy Apple+ care 2yrs for $69. So when they break it you only pay $50 to fix it. $329 + $69 + $50 = $448 ipad 9th gen with Apple+ care < ipad 10th gen $449.😄

While sure it is a very nice placement, you forgot to mention how THAT Specific Placement is the Reason WHY 10th gen iPad doesn’t have 2nd gen Apple Pencil support. That placement left Apple with NO place to put the magnets and inductive charging pad for the 2nd Gen Apple pencil, Hence the need to stick with a Very dated 1st gen Apple Pencil and now a necessary $9 accessory. And no, Apple can’t put the magnets and charging pad on the top side of the iPad cause there’s not enough length to hold the Pencil and the power button is there. Now could Apple have done what Samsung did and put the magnets and charging pad on the back of the iPad? Yes, but a.) Knowing Apple, would have raised the prices of the 10th gen iPad even further cause of its new proprietary Apple Pencil charging design; and b.) that design is just objectively much less convenient than Apple’s Pencil on the side design.

To go portless, Apple would need to figure out how to transmit data over wireless in recovery/DFU mode (probably over qi) and before anyone argues that they would be fine by just having people buy new phones when they need restored, a large thing that the geniuses do is restore iPhones when they cannot boot into iOS. iTunes also requires a wired connection before you can sync over WiFi.

During my schooling I ended up having to buy a MacBook Pro in order to take board exams on so now that I have graduated I realize that the 12.9 inch iPad Pro was a little bit much. So I recently decided to downsize I selling the iPad Pro online for $406, and also selling the magic keyboard and folio case. Then using that money to buy the fifth generation iPad Air which I was able to snag for $711 for the 256 GB at Best Buy because the package was damaged even though the iPad was never used. This allowed me to have enough memory to transfer everything over, and also allowed me to still get use out of my Apple Pencil while not having such a ridiculously small screen like the iPad mini. Overall, I am pleased because after reselling everything I essentially got the iPad for free and gained some upgrades like a higher megapixel front facing camera and the M1 chip, which was better than the A12 Bionic in my iPad Pro.

If you are wanting an iPad, go to the apple refurbished store and get a 2018 or a 2020 iPad Pro for less than the cost of the 10th gen iPad.

Does a laminated display make a noticeable difference to casual users that aren’t using the pencil? Genuine question as I’m still using a 5th gen base model and have never had a laminated display.

two hundred and fifty for a keyboard..? no. I'd personally get an OTG cable and a USB hub and just plug in my mouse and keyboard and call it a day. Also I wonder if the iPad would still have the Audio Jack.

Portless phones are a bad idea. Transferring music and files would be much slower versus USB3.1 or faster connections. Wireless charging is slower vs wired as well. We already lost the headphone jack battle a long time ago. Let's not lose this too.

Recently got myself an iPad Pro M1. Main reason I got it was was the Apple Pencil 2 support and the longevity. So far I love it. Its an amazing device even through it was $1100CAD

My guess and analysis: Apple is just not ready enough for new iPads, but they have to release something at a sweet price point for the upcoming holiday seasons. And they are not only run out of revolutional ideas, but also money. The price of iPad Air and mini in other regions like China even increased with no upgrade at all. With all these transitions from manufacturing Apple devices in China to other countries such as India, which cost a significant price bump up for manufacture, along with all the political limits to prevent Apple use chips made by Chinese company, I guess Apple is now suffering from a very narrow cash flow. Technically, they can no longer use the memory chip manufactured by YMTC(Yangtze Memory Technologies Co), which are currently used in all iPhone 14 models sold from mainland China. Now they have to deal with all these "pre-ordered" chips and find replacements for all upcoming iPhones for the biggest, Chinese market.

I just bought an iPad mini and pencil 2 for note taking at work and I love it! Shop the open box at Best Buy lol Sure I had to get the champagne color but it’s in a folio case, pair that with a paper like screen protector and boom! Off to digital note taking races! I paid 439.99 for the iPad and 111.99 for the pencil

I am still using iPad Pro (2018) second generation and I have no intention of upgrading until Apple implements the support it needs to function as a portable Mac. The new iPads are not where they need to be as yet, more power is great and new video editing software perfect. Has Photoshop for iPad has been improved? I do my editing etc from a PC or Mac , i would rather use my iPad. I will be waiting before I buy another iPad.

Apple (to me at least) seems to be slowly declining back to that stupidity state of mind they were in way back before they hired Steve Jobs back, and now that he's passed away, their filter is gone.

They're probably just putting M2 chips in everything so that they can stop manufacturing M1 chips. Silicone chip factories are overworked at the moment, so production has to be simplified.

The pencil is the biggest thing for me. It makes the 10th gen iPad a dealbreaker and the mini and the air *really* attractive. The 1st gen pencil is annoying to charge and easy to lose. Apple didn’t even make a 1st party case that stores the pencil, so I made an elastic book strap to hold it. How much more would it make it cost to have Apple Pencil 2 support?

I feel like apple will launch iphone SE with bigger screen and USB c so they can kill both previous generations of older iphones as a "cheaper" option and have a 3 phone line up: se/15 (normal and plus)/15 pro (normal and max). If with that they lower the 15 base price and keep the se around the 500 dollar mark, it will be killer.

I wouldnt worry about the charging situation too much, unless you use a case on your pro’s that block wireless charging. I use my watch charger sometimes, plus magsafe would work if you owned that, so i think you’d be good for 2-3 years just getting by with that

I was one of those dumb enough shit heads that bought into the “going iPad Pro solo” idea 2 years ago because it was portable as nothing I’ll ever own and now is basically a 2nd TV for my kids because I went back to my Windows laptop. I’m not getting another iPad ever again, it’s overall useable for everyday work instead do get any Android or Chrome OS tablet, they’re really good and affordable.
