@@_SZNN I would over the Pro if you aren’t doing super heavy work loads with video sucks as RED or 6K stuff. Even with that being said 16gig would be fine if you stuck with the air. The only real differences between the pro and air in this lineup are the fans and Touch Bar. The Touch Bar is silly and the use of fans is almost not a thing if you arnt doing super heavy processing. Oh yes, the M1 performance surpass what I could ever expect. Running OBS recording video AND making music at the same time on a laptop this size, at this price...pffff...it's just ridiculous. Also good for running VS Code, since it's now optimized for arm64 too. Although upgradability is lost, it's still awesome to have the memory in the same package as the cpu and with the arm64 RISC instructions we get less heat. Single core performance that equals or betters the Ryzen 5950x which is the best of x86 and faster than anything from Intel. Runs totally silent and cool which will ensure long life. Sips power at 18 watts total system power. And all this at a price point of, well, if you're buying the little Mac Mini you can get them as low as $599 from the Apple refurbished store, hmmm yeah I think you could say it's total game changer. You get better single core performance on this than the fastest Intel macs at the moment (the i7 2020 imac). Also a quick clarification about the Thunderbolt ports. Yes there are only two but each of those ports have a dedicated PCIe lane and each is on its own separate bus. This means 40gbps throughput per port for a total of 80gbps total. That's a hell of a lot better than the 27" 2020 iMacs which have two ports but only one bus so 40gbps total throughput. Great machines. There's never been this much performance at this price point. My M1 mini embarrasses my 27" 2020 iMac i7 for music production.

Hi, yes it's finally a great leap in tech. The thing I love about it the most is the tight portable setup, and that I can finally run my favourite software like Logic Pro, FL Studio, Bitwig, Davinci Resolve, Affinity Designer AND VS Code with a completely cool computer. It's lovely! Great note on the available throughput of the dual thunderbolt/USB-C ports! I second the price point! My previous mac cost around €3.800 when it was new. This M1 cost €1.600. Yes, the my intel MBP 2016 is 15" 16GB, and my M1 is 13" 8GB. BUT the M1 still outperforms the old intel mac. ;) I'm glad we finally can get macs at a more reasonable price. Thanks!

Hi, what’s your recommended usb hub. Any preference. Thanks!
@MattiasHolmgren
3 жыл бұрын
Hi for the Apple M1 I do recommend grabbing the Belink Thunderbolt Dock Core(affiliate link): amzn.to/2SMNtoZ The reason is that this dock lets you charge your MacBookPro via the usb-c port on the Dock Core Hub. At the same time you can connect external display to it + Usb 3.0 gear. The reason I chose the Thunderbolt Dock Core hub, is because I need at least ONE free Thunderbolt port on the Macbook Pro 13" Apple M1 2020 to connect the UAD Apollo Twin X. I have some other hubs, but they don't support good USB 3.0 and usage of all these ports at the same time. So this hub is awesome! A bit pricey, but you get what you pay for in this case. I'll post a review video of it sometime. Hope the info helps!

My advice is to always hook the UAD Apollo device directly to one of the Thunderbolt 4 ports on the MacBook Pro. And use the Belkin Thunderbolt hub for all other connections: power, external display, usb-3 discs, etc. You can power this hub via external Mac charger, it also further charge your Mac with up to 60W!

@@MattiasHolmgren My bad, so sorry, that’s what you meant. One port by itself always for the audio interface, which is the main device also. Guess that means that in the current MacBooks (with only two ports), everything else will have to go into the other port via usb hub.

@@coose0 hey, yeah I got the M1 MAX 14" MacBook Pro yesterday, and I'm currently installning all software to begin the tests and prepare the comparison episodes. Yeah, like you mention most current videos are not even from music producers, but rather video editors who just load up Logic without knowing what to show / load and compare. LOL I'll be focusing on comparing performance between the M1 and M1 MAX, since, like you know, Intel isn't even close anymore. But I will probably throw in some intel comparison just because it's such a vast space between them. ,) What I can say for now, before any videos, is that I initially like the form factor of the original M1 before the M1 MAX 14". It has a brand new overall design and I've grown so accustomed to the light package of the 13" M1. Insane power in a small package. But M1 MAX will probably have a lot to compensate with regarding raw cpu power performance. The new keyboard is sleek and feels nice. The internal speakers of the M1 MAX does indeed sound much better than previous. FInally you can identify a little bit of bass. Loading projects and updating plugins (when installing new pluggs) in Logic is insanely fast on M1 MAX! ;)

Super happy with the 2019, and as i said in other comment it have the ability to also run Win10 if a need should arise. Other than that, probably even better of with the newer M1. Probably, because their plugins (NI) are not yet fully optimized for the arm64 / M1 instructions. You notice that when I open Vital synth too in this video. Fully native arm64 apps does not suffer the same way. NI need to optimize their gfx handling and release native arm64 builds of their apps. But I am glad they at least run so you can use them. 🌞

Its all about optimizing the code for the platform. It can be troublesome, time consuming, depending on the api libraries the developer include when compiling their code. Some might work but is not truly optimized. There is quite the difference between x86 and arm64 instructions. But again, I am glad they at least work. Hopefully they will sort it out in a near future. Look at FL Studio, their arm64 build loads in a flash. Glad you enjoy my videos Martin. 🌞🥳🏂

Hi, 256 GB is def enough for the OS disc, if you run with external disc for your big sample libs. Personally I always go for the 512GB in my laptops so I can have stuff like Omnisphere etc on the main disc. So I don't need to bring extra external discs everywhere. I do have most other big sample libs (Heavyocity, East West, 8DIO etc.) on external discs though. But Omnisphere, Trilian, RMX stays on my system disc. 🌞

I was hoping there would be a much more in depth test of 8GB of memory with Omnipshere - Is 8GB apple ram worth say 16gb of ram in an intel? Why are the figures so low?
@MattiasHolmgren
3 жыл бұрын
It's not really comparable because Apple M1 has different processor/mem structure. The memory sits in the same package as the CPU. Thus it's uber fast to transfer data between CPU and memory which is the foundation to most operations. But 8 GB is still 8 GB worth of RAM storage so it's only going to take you so far when using many applications at the same time. But for general music making, as shown in the video, I think the 8 GB works very well. It's not like in a Windows machine, where everything feels soggy when you have too little RAM. OSX Big Sur handles memory very well, especially if you use pure arm64 apps. Good stuff!

@MattiasHolmgren
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Magdalena. Ive been using a few different interfaces on the M1 and as long as they are quite new they should work just fine. M1 work fine with usb class-compliant hardware, but it might be harder with the specific app softwares that ship with the interfaces. Apogee recently released a new software app which is compatible with M1. Ive been using my Apogee Duet 2 (for mac / pc)… Did you try the updated Apogee Control 2 beta software? I ran the Duet 2 without any extra installs. But the Maestro software obviously did not work. 😅 My favourites at the moment are the UA Apollo Twin X interdace. A bit pricey but the converters, unison preamps and plugs are well worth the cost. 🥳 A cheaper alternative that Ive been using in many many of my videos is the Komplete Audio 6 mk2. Excellent midbudget solution. 🍿 Or the Steinberg Ur22C which is like $200. All good options depending on budget. All work great with the Apple M1.🦊 Thanks! ☀️
