When I have more time I want to do a full comparison vs AMD APUs with compatible games, any suggestion of macOS titles to try?

Is there anything you can do to increase performance on the M1 like overclocking it or the memory? Maybe do some custom cooling to reduce temps and increase clock speeds?

I got a base MacMini (8gig ram) back in January. It's absolutely silent and has been promoted to my main machine. It replaced my Sager/Clevo laptop with an i7-8086 (undervolted and turbo disabled so fixed 4ghz), 32gig ram, GTX1080 mobile. The Sager was running the CPU and the GPU at around 80C with fans about 80% all the time and was SO LOUD and it would heat the room! My only regret with the Mini is I should have gotten the 16gig model, as running WoW and OBS streaming to Twitch while functional was a bit constrained. :-) I run my Mini with my 1440p 144hz LG 650F monitor. On this display I had to disable free sync, which the Mac doesn't support, and in doing so I was able to set the display in System Preferences from 100hz to 144hz over HDMI, then set WoW to use Vsync. Its perfectly fine for doing Nathria with Discord (which is still Intel binary) just fine. My WoW settings I set to graphics 5, Vsync enabled, General (High, Dynamic, Enabled), Environment all 5's, and Effects (Fair, Fair, Low, Fair, Good, Good, Good. I'm going to try raid tomorrow with shadow and liquid set to low instead of fair and see how it goes. The Sager now lives in the basement, and I use a remote control software for gaming called Parsec, so I can play SWTOR on it, since that game doesn't run on Mac. Well it does, in a Windows 10 for ARM VM, then installed in the VM, but that's a hassle to run. :-). Thanks Sir! Love the content!

It's amazing really, that proper tech advance rather than 300W overbloated desktop CPUs that also need a factory next to it to power and cool it.

The M1 is a really impressive chip. It's caused even some people in the PC space to say that arm will be taking over x86 and that it's far superior missing the most important part that the M1 isn't just good because of ARM but more importantly because of Apple's engineers who designed it and built it from the ground up to work with their ecosystem.

What I think is really revolutionary for Apple is the potential the M1 Mac Mini shows for completely decimating the entry-level/budget PC prebuilts. Apple's reputation for making products that "just work" and get long-term support, if leveraged properly with the M1 chip and it's successors in affordable machines, is something that can truly wipe the floor with the competition. I don't think I've ever seen a prebuilt for $700 that doesn't fairly quickly degrade into a complete hot-mess that takes ages to open even something like Word for no apparent reason.

Will you do a similar test for M2 Mac Mini? This had a lot of views, hopefully you'll agree there's interest. I'm loving my M1 Macbook Pro 16", it's so good for 1440p WoW. Glad to see Intel, nvidia and AMD having more competition.

Really enjoy seeing this type of content for the M1 mac mini, I see a lot of potential in these chips going forward. With the rumored M1X doubling performance cores and GPU cores it would be an entry level gaming PC without any trouble.

My GPU is crapping out, currently underclocking it a bit and it seems to have stabilized. Checking PC and GPU prices is just shocking. I have been wanting an m1 mini since it released, now I am really contemplating it. Your FPS in that Wintergrasp BG while it did get down to 30 FPS you weren't fps lagging so that is respectable.

@HardwareNumb3rs

Never heard of it (pun intended 🙃), probably I never stressed it enough to make it start, even with long 4K video exports it doesn't get hot enough to use the fan, yes it can draw more but in a normal usage is around 10 to 15W, still even if it was 25W would have been crazy good as well for the performance

what do you think about the 8gb ram? Idk if that's enough but it seems like you made it work pretty well. Thing is, apple charge more money for a single 8gb upgrade than a 32gb binned B-die kit. It's absolutely ridiculous, borderline criminal. They really shouldn't charge more than ~50$ for 8gb of ram and that's already pushing it.
@HardwareNumb3rs

That’s because the ram is integrated on the soc, kinda normal that is expensive but honestly if I can edit a 4K video with a game in the background going with a 16gb version seems pretty useless for most users, I don’t feel the need of more power or capacity, hard to be any faster with the task I do, even photoshop is lightning fast with big reflex RAWs

@@HardwareNumb3rs Turns out apple use perfectly normal LPDDR4X bga chips, they aren't integrated into the M1 package as such so it shouldn't be any more expensive than those chips usually are.

The M1 chip is nice. The new one will be interesting to see in this game. At least with the M1 we're seeing here, I feel apples gpu lacks allot of the tech Nvidia has to handle particle effects and the such better. Seems this chip just gets crushed when any particle effect is taking place.

I need something mainly for photo and video editing. But occasionally, I want to play WoW or a new MMO. What would be a matching PC build? Money or performance wise. It costs about 750 euros, in my Country. Which are the cons of Mac mini, compared to a similarly priced PC?
@HardwareNumb3rs

For the money is a great photo and video editor, brilliant for that job, no match even for high end PCs, gaming side the gpu can be considered as a entry level discrete gpu, if you accept the compromise of lowering the detail and the games you want to play are available for macOS it won’t disappoint, keep in mind that you can’t run windows there
