The sad part is, the MIL's defense of her husband probably stems for the fact that just realized she spend pretty much her whole life with such a man and she never knew. Wasting so many years staying with a crook, and her pride won't allow her to admit it might have been a mistake, even if deep down, she thnks it was.

@@Eevie361I absolutely agree! It's not hard to be sympathetic. If people aren't or haven't been in an abusive relationship, I strongly encourage them to learn more about it. Also, those who are in those situations, I hope they have have resources to get out and have the strength to leave as it's not easy especially if they are isolated. Unfortunately resources and services aren't available everywhere and some countries are better than others.

Did it *EVER OCCUR TO YOU* in the SLIGHTEST that MAYBE why OP COULDN'T fight back or stand up against the MIL was because people like Jim would make THREATS against not only the women's lives, but the lives of the loved ones as well?! On top of that, it's *POSSIBLE* that the abusers would manipulate the loved ones into believing THEM instead of the VICTIMS in an attempt to control their victims on a leash like an abused animal. So for people like YOU to "Victim Shame" the real victims WITHOUT looking deeper into the manner... I hope you NEVER have to be in the same situation as Kylie was, because it's like living in a NIGHTMARE you can't wake up from.

Amber is as much of an abuser as her husband is, though. If you listen to the way she was speaking to the main character, including attacking her character, verbal abuse, bringing up the fact that she was in the foster care system and didn't have parents, and then manipulating her- Amber is just as much of a problem as her husband. Amber and her husband honestly deserve one another.

I don't get why people are feeling sorry for Amber here. She's just as abusive as her husband is. Listen to the way she talks to the main character, always bringing her down, always manipulating her, always using the fact that she grew up in the foster care system against her. Depending upon her upbringing, the main character acting docile and not being confrontational could be a protective measure, especially if she had to endure abuse at her foster homes. It's a sign of trauma, not a sign of weakness. Then add onto the fact that this MIL is verbally abusive, manipulative, and cruel- I mean, honestly. She's as bad as her husband is and in my opinion, they deserve one another.

I don't understand, if you allow someone to abuse you, you both have a serious problem. And I'm not sure whose fault it is. I'm not impressed you didn't say anything. Personally even though I'm a man I don't think that matters. She should have spoken up after that whatever happens happens. I would never stay in a situation as unpleasant is that. If your husband does it back you up it's time to look for someone that actually loves you. If he doesn't care enough about you why would you ever be with him. My father-in-law would need dentures if I was ever told he was doing anything like that. But obviously if you don't love or care about somebody. Now we're back to the part of why are you living with someone that doesn't care one way or another about you

Unfortunately, someone who is being hurt feels trapped, sometimes even threatened to keep quiet. It's not as simple as you have put it. How do I know? Because I went through abuse myself and it took a lot for me to gather my courage and get away from the one that hurt me. So please, before you start blaming the victim, keep in mind that they don't often have the choice to leave the ones hurting them.
