Is it just me or does it seem like Apple with its various versions of iPads and Macs is headed back to the way they were just before when Steve Jobs came back to take over in 1997. When there were way too many devices, and the first thing, Jobs did was trim the product line.

The biggest problem with capitalism is that eventually cannibalizes itself. The goal for this company is to make as much money as possible. They don’t care about the experience anymore. They care about the illusion. The illusion that somebody has walking into one of your stores to buy something from them. And it’s going to get worse and worse and worse and then nobody’s gonna care about it. But we do have bigger problems to worry about so.

I think a lot of the criticism of this would not have happened if Apple had launched this as the iPad SE, kept the old price, and released the Pencil 1 (now Pencil SE) with a USB-C connection. Then they could have said, "and for customers who already have the old one, we will be releasing an adaptor," and we will continue to sell the old Pencil for customers on older iPads.

You put it so eloquently, incredible video Quinn! I am afraid of Apple slowly exchanging their principles for profits (the ads that you mention as well as the ads apparently coming to Maps, the over-convoluted product lineup that iPads inherited, etc). The excuse could be made that they help Apple be pandemic-proof and recession-proof (note how they only implemented a hiring freeze as oppose to laying off workers) but it seems that these decisions will unfortunately live beyond the justification.

Case in point. Apple’s ridiculous price hike on Subscriptions. I had a family plan of Apple One. That was going to increase $3 per month. End result. I cancelled Apple One and kept 200gb iCloud Plus and Apple Music only. I also dislike how Apple has a 200gb storage plan - but the next one up is 2TB. Why not have 500gb and 1 TB tiers as well. With inflation going through the roof in most countries, I am looking more and more at ways of saving money - especially with tech offerings. The value proposition of Apple One (Apple TV/News/Arcade) just isn’t convincing me that I should be paying MORE for it. Apple Arcade has such infantile games (nothing remotely of interest to me). Apple TV is mostly American content (sorry USA), but I’d like to see more regional content. I love Apple products, but to me they just seem to be getting more and more greedy. There will come a point where I will look at alternatives.

So what if instead of using the old v1 Apple Pencil, uses a v1.1 pencil where the only difference is USB-C? Lightning (largely) uses the USB protocol, so it would be a minor change in software, but also hardware, allowing Apple to leverage most of their economies of scale already for the v1.0 while making the v1.1 pencil actually compatible instead of adapted to work. Since the v1.1 is basically identical to the v1.0, why not sell the cable/adaptor (which should be male USB-C and female lightning) as a way to carry the v1.0 forward.

This is huge. I would say, definitively, that there are two(-ish?) reasons why I have so many apple devices: First: superior and consistent build quality, longevity, and general user experience, and second: the fact that they've basically been the only option for getting devices without crapware, ads all over, basic privacy focus, and so on. Like when a Galaxy S phone I had came with facebook installed that could only be disabled and not removed, it made Apple look like the only option. And even if they're usually still better in this regard, moving more into selling us as the product is really unnerving. I just wish other companies would offer better competition so they could actually feel pressure. I wish windows/Linux laptops and Android tablets were good enough to compete. At least a couple Android phones are close enough these days.

Your point between Jobs & Cook is interesting. Would Jobs be more like Cook if he wasn’t trying to keep the company alive and working with a mature behemoth that Cook has to manage? Job’s had to press innovation and quality too grow the loyal Apple fan base. This was an existential threat & Job’s was brilliant. Whereas Cook has to squeeze every cent to beat market expectations. Apple keeps making quality products, but hasn’t made any WOW devices since Job’s passed. Their real challenge isn’t quality, but innovation to excite people.
@macboyyhd9811
Жыл бұрын
At the end of Jobs' reign the company was already a mature behemoth, but instead of switching over to the carefully-calculated-stock-maintaining strategy that cook and every other tech CEO employ today, Jobs continued with making consumer focused products that didn't look like they were the most profitable on paper. Perfect example is the iPad. When that launched, everyone thought it was the dumbest thing and wouldn't sell. Look at what kind of market that created. If cook was CEO in 2010 I don't think we would have an iPad today, or it would be a lot different. he was high up in the company then, I don't remember what his opinions were exactly. They might be in Jobs' biography by Walter Issacson, great read. Not sure if this responds to your question entirely

@@macboyyhd9811 It sorta does, I just thought I recalled by the time of the iPad rollout, he was clearly in a bad way. I agree with your comment about Job’s consumer focus which was key since MS had pretty much wrapped up the business sphere (making computing boring). If I recall correctly there was a debate over stuff like the Books app which had a bookcase. What I guess caught my ear was reflecting on the 2 CEO’S, perspective of when the took over. Job”s dealing with closure of his baby and Cooks paradigm of working more for the shareholders than the consumer. Actually, following a legend, Cook has done pretty good. There's lots of rational reasons to absolutely loathe the megacorp that Apple has become, whilst appreciating that their budget allows them to employ some of the very brightest people on the planet. I therefore combine my loathing of Apple with objective admiration of some of the things they manage to pull off. This mostly seems to happen when executive level bean-counters get out of the way of genius level engineers - a common enough trait right across the tech industry. I watch your channel, not because it's "deliberately devisive", which I'm not sure is accurate, but because it's honest and far better informed from a much broader perspective than most Apple centric channels. This is one of my favorite videos of yours, Quinn! I agree Apple needs to be careful because forcing to integrate their services can become a paywall quite quickly. For example, the main reason Apple doesn't lets you expand the storage and sells you lower storage is to profit from iCloud Drive. On the other hand, lower storage allows to integrate the whole ecosystem were the cloud becomes the digital hub, which then results in a digital lifestyle, which is what Steve Jobs envisioned with his strategy. The main reason why iCloud isn't seen as an entire paywall is because of the initial 5GB of storage which is what other services like dropbox offer too. Freemium business models are quite appealing. I think Apple should consider more ways they can offer their services for free so that people are gravitated to subscribing or subscribing all-together to Apple one for the more premium experience. For example, I'd like to see more freemium experiences for students like what Apple Music does. It gives you access to try other of Apple's services (Apple TV+ for now only) while also paying a lower price with the student discount.

But this turn towards making Apple an ad company, a rent-seeking company where inevitably *I* am the product, is beyond disgusting to me. Quinn, while you make very good points about the pencil support, you’re ignoring the two very clear alternatives to this: 1: (the fairly obvious one) they use the space that the old camera took up to put the Apple Pencil 2 camera. If they had to do the RnD to move the camera that means that they just as easily could’ve (and probably did) moved the pencil magnets. 2: they include the adapter in the box. Option 2 is problematic because of e-waste obviously, but look at how much more expensive not only the new iPad, but all of its accessories are. The fact that someone trying to upgrade from an older iPad (or even someone trying to “downgrade” from an older air) can’t just use their existing pencil out of the box is crazy. I really don’t understand why they didn’t just move the magnetic connector; it seems like a penny pinching technique so they can “upgrade” the base iPad model in future

Re: the Apple TV. A large part of the reason it is worth paying for an Apple TV over something like a fire stick or just using the smart TV Features built into the TV you are using is that it does not sell your data and it has been, up until now, a virtually ad-free experience that focused on usability and user enjoyment. The moment Apple begins to erode that and still charge for the product is when it no longer makes sense. A big part of the reason iOS and iPad OS are so good is how clean and focused they are. There are no ads or mandatory pop-ups on the home screen of the device. It’s just your iPhone or iPad. It is plainly obvious that customers are wiling to pay to not be the product. Customers also expect Apple to charge a premium compared to their competition. They can and should just increase prices instead of supplementing the purchase price of the product with ad revenue.

And 2k is ridiculous, considering iPad cameras are worse than iPhones, yet they still show ads with people recording pro video with them. It’s just worse.

You can get an iPad Air 4 or even a used Tab S7/S8 for the same price, similar performance, better pencils, etc etc.

I agree in many aspects of the video but I disagree in 3 basic elements related to the iPad itself. 1. For me, the 10th iPad is an experiment more than a consolidation of innovation. Yes, it applies innovation by putting the landscape camera even when it compromises the use of the 2nd gen Apple Pencil. Whoever, as Rene Ritchie says “every decision is a compromise”. Taking that as a premise, if this design in the camera position started on the iPad Pro as it is today, it would be a bad move. Also, even if you say that the iPad Pro can be the product where the consolidation of the camera and magnets placement would be good, I don’t thinks its true. It’s similar by the way of how there is not an iMac without chin in the sense that Apple still is no capable of making a fanned Mac underneath a display. 2. I share the view about price sensitive markets, whoever I would refer to the internacional price sensitive markets which are not schools but people who decides to buy first hand Apple products in which the certified refurbished program doesn’t exist and doesn’t want to buy second hand products. Apple as an international corporation has to seek for those markets as well, not only its biggest. 3. The Magic Keyboard Folio is a good product, but its adjusted to the limitations of the iPad itself than anything else. I think that it can be a version for other iPads and possibly the function keys can be collocated in the Magic Keyboard Case. However, it has to redesign the version of the keyboards for putting those keys, so, in the end, the tech snobs would criticize Apple for pushing planned obsolescence. In the end, the would buy it but speak loudly that Apple is a perverse corporation. Anything but that, the video is safe to constate that the iPad is good enough for the people is planned to be bought by and its very good by using solid product designs by trickle them down from the top products to the base line. But those aspects mentioned before can make more sense in clarifying possible outcomes that generates more questions from the video.

Finally a strong argument on our daily drivers. I got tired a long time ago listening to all those "tech influencers" and reading winning complains about apple and this is exactly whats wrong with their line up. great video indeed.

Boy, most of these comments miss the point and the video is good. The comments are all over the hardware and I get that it is all a bit confusing but that’s not the problem. Most commenters are hung up on a dongle for an Apple Pencil. There are two sides the Steve Jobs’ leadership of Apple. The first, and most commented on is design. Yep, he was very focused on that, and we all know the stories. His design philosophy ‘delighted the customer’ as well as generating much angst. I remember when Apple got rid of the optical drive, killed the iPod, and removed the earphone jack; one would think the world ended. But we all got over it; just as we will for the new iPad configuration (we will buy what we want / need, or not). The other Jobs legacy is the fact that he felt the world owed Apple a commission for every piece of software for Apple products. The idea was that whenever anyone wrote a feature or app for Apple that did not contribute to Apple’s bottom line was theft. Here is the rub and where the video is SPOT ON. Apple’s greedy / grasping nature for add ons is a real problem. Getting 30% for the App Store and this bizarre ad policy is really bad and points to hubris and anti-trust. I really like Apple products and the overall Apple integration: my watch, iPhone, iPad, and Mac work beautifully together. I pay a premium for the infrastructure, willingly. But do not and will not accept the added on BS. Apple must be careful not to kill the big profit in favor of marginal marketing and sales. Cook, while a genius supply chain guy and, by numbers CEO, may be leaning too hard to the marketing / sales folks. The big techs are stuttering, Apple, so far, has been solid (its China supply chain is an exception) and we’ll see if can overcome its pride and market position to go from magical to mythical. I pay more (I know), but do not insult my intelligence with stupid, counter productive ads and destroy app development with draconian policies. Disappointment is worse than hatred.

Oh no! You told me why I hate the 10th gen iPad: it’s better than my M1 iPad Pro, with buttons and cameras.

i got the iphone 14 pro this year but tbh i’ve been using iphones since iphone xs and even with all the changes they have done it still feels boring and lacking i feel like i just use my iphone for media consumption but when i was on android i used to do so many tech savvy stuff, android kinda encourages being different, apple wants us all to be the same

I have the 2021 iPad Pro, and its speakers are dual side ones like the new ones, but you can get a 2020-2021 pro model with more storage for the money and avoid the product-positioning things Apple handicapped the new iPad with (and numerous other limitations of the new iPad). I also just got someone a 2021 11” iPad Pro renew with full Apple warrantee, Apple Pencil 2 for the same price as a 2022 regular iPad without the pencil and half the storage, so…
