This information might be helpful for Apple Pencil 1 users: In the box where you bought the pencil, the part where all the papers are, there’s an adapter type thingy as well as an extra tip. You can put the adapter thingy on your typical iPad charger and then attach the pencil to the adapter. So it’s basically like charging your pencil using the same cable as your iPad, instead of that awkward pencil sticking out of the iPad. Hope this was helpful!

As an artist, I’m more use to using a professional pencil and an eraser on the side. So I never turn it because erasers on the top of pencils don’t work well with art. Not sure if they were making it more “professional” for the art world, but it definitely does work better for me since I’m so use to it! I think if it had an eraser I would feel more inclined to only use it for writing (since it’s so natural for me to flip the pencil to erase while I write)

The issues everyone has had with the Apple pencil 1 hasn’t been mine. I know where I place the cap when charging. I’m not careless with it being easy to lose. I only have to pair it once with my iPad Pro and it automatically pairs each time I go to use the pencil again for a project. I use the adapter to the cable to charge my pencil and do not use the iPad itself to do the charging. The pencil felt fine in my hand with its weight and length. The new pencil with its double tap functions is truly amazing and beneficial tool. The flat side is mainly for attaching to the iPad for charging. The fact you like it feels like a typical pencil wasn’t is true purpose, or it would have flat sides all around it in a hexagon design like an actual pencil. That being said, I’m looking forward to buying the new iPad Pro and pencil with all of its new features.

I am a professional artist and I have the 2017 iPad Pro and when the new 2018 model was announced to be honest other than a change in the pencil and possibly bevel size I couldn't see how they could improve as its only been a year, innovation and technology does change so fast but when the iPad Pro first came out it was a huge success among artists so it was difficult on how they could better it so soon. After reading the specs and now watching your great review my theories have been confirmed, its a lot of money to simply buy the 2018 model for the change in pencil and how it charges and magnetizes which is really good to be honest, but other than a slightly slimmer, less beveled screen and the fact the IOS and Procreate are the same spec on the 2017 and 2018 models its not worth the money to ditch the 2017 model. If you haven't got an iPad Pro then go for the 2018 model if your a professional artist, if your just starting out the 2017 is perfectly adequate. Its best to get the biggest storage possibly but as an artist 64GB is more than enough, if your wanting to store videos then you should go for the highest storage. One thing I don't like on the new iPad Pro 2018 is the reduction on the bevel, when I use it my palm sits on the main screen which does actually cause unwanted ink strokes etc, which is really annoying if you forget to check and later you see extra ink lines created by your palm. With the 2017 model having the bevel gives you that space to rest your palm without disturbing the art your working on. Also not having a home button can cause a problem especially if the iPad Pro crashes, as their is no other way of re-engaging the home screen other than turning the iPad off and on and that can risk losing any work you are currently working on. For me, I am sticking with my 2017, its not a major issue charging the pencil and the specs for the IOS and software are the same, if I was to upgrade I will wait a couple of years until there is a model that seriously makes advances in what the iPad Pro can do from the 2017 model, to me this is Apple making money on a product with very little changes only the actual look which I can't personally justify the cost for such small improvements.

@CeziHD
6 жыл бұрын
The new Pro is way more future proof in terms of its internal specs & speed. The new A12X chip is a theoretically beast .. let's see if App Developer will take advantage of that in the future. But everything will probably run 100% fine on any Pro generation in the near future. The screen is literally the same as the 2017 model except for lightly rounded corners. Upgrading from last year model is a complete waste of money .. it's just for the aesthetics and the more convenient pencil docking & charging. (but if you put a full body case on it .. how does it work then :D .. yeah you already guessed it.) To handle storage just use a wifi dock that allows you to hook up any external ssd or hdd wirelessly to your iPad and store files from finished projects there. (& get them if you have to) My 2015 12,9" iPad Pro stopped working this year, so if I want to still have an iPad Pro as drawing tablet and media consumption device I'll have to upgrade anyway 😊 (or get it repaired for like $300 .. but no not really worth it for that price when I could rather invest it into the new one) The surface pro6 sadly doesn't but the iPad for that .. windows is nice too tho 😅

Using the usb c cable, and compare it to using the same setup with the 2017 ipad using maybe an adapter to connect it to an external monitor. Reason is , the only thing that really interest me on the new ipad would be using the usb-C for external monitor, and i wanna know if it same thing if i just use an adapter for the 2017 model. on the presentation i saw for the new ipad pro , it looked like when plugged in a second monitor, it looked like he second monitor becomes an extension rather than just a duplicated display when using it on procreate or the upcoming photoshop app.

I agree that the 1st gen Pencil charger you must plug into your iPad is very unlike Apple - they are supposed to be a functional brand that thinks about these simple things that make the user experience easier. The magnetic charger on the 2nd gen Pencil is awesome, also because you won’t worry about losing a cap. I was just gifted a 1st gen iPad Pro 12.9’’ inch, with all the Pencil and Keyboard accessories, so obviously I cannot “upgrade” to these more functional and improved versions. But one thing is clear: seeing as Apple intends on releasing new Pencils that are only compatible with new iPads, I’m going to sit and wait for the 3rd gen Pencil to upgrade my iPad 🤷🏻♀️ Also an unpopular opinion: I disagree that the 1st gen Pencil feels unnatural/unfamiliar. I *hate* the usual pencils, and used mechanical pencils for most of my life, before going for pens altogether. Mechanical pencils are rounded, like pens, and I find them to be far more ergonomic - the regular wooden pencils hurt my fingers because of their rough edges, whereas a smooth, rounded surface allows me to hold the pen/cil for much longer with much more comfort. I guess it all comes down to the writing tool you are used to using irl, and I for one appreciate the rounded 1st gen Apple Pencil.

Everyone complained about the charging like a lollipop (even though a charger was included in the box, so you didn't need to do this), so I don't see how this is wrong, Is it because the old pencil doesn't work? That makes sense, I guess some people wanted an adapter, but let's be honest, it is a 20$ difference, most people would be getting the old one from eBay or something because it's cheaper there instead of actually buying the 1st gen from apple directly. However for people who own a previous apple pencil, I understand that I guess, I am in that boat, luckily I don't want this iPad.

Prior to the 2018 pro models, I was recommending the ipad pros, for being cheaper and better than Wacom products. Now after these new 2018 ipad pro models, I somehow feel very inclined to go back to Wacom again. What a sad affair.
@JamesJulier-Artist

Which Wacom product is better for the same price or less?
@zycane
6 жыл бұрын
@@JamesJulier-Artist Well, when you know only the 1TB 2018 ipad pro version got 6GB ram, and the rest still only has 4GB, you suddenly have it at a price right at the mobile studio pro of Wacom's line. As big a procreate and apple pencil fan I am, with this change to only giving the 1TB version the needed buff in Ram, and such a small one at that, is just a shame, when thinking how how needed it actually is, as you are limited to amounts of layers in procreate, according to the amounts of RAM it had,. I had both the 2016 ipad pro 9.7 and the 2017 ipad pro 12.9, to know the limitations of layers, based on their ram configs. Had the whole new line, from 64gb to 512gb storage, also had 6GB ram, I obviously wouldn't have said this, but those few extra ram, will make all the difference, and they are so easy to come by, and Apple decided to be cheap on it, again, is just disappointing. Not to mention the new apple pencil 2, costs nearly twice the price, as the wacom pro pen.
@JamesJulier-Artist
6 жыл бұрын
Well I use a fair amount of layers and the only restrictions I have found is my ability to juggle all then layers I have and getting confused. I just tested an A4 canvas, the size I use most of the time and you can create 57 layers, approximately 5 times the amount I usually need. I understand everyone is different, but I value drawing experience more than a vast amount of layers. I’m more than satisfied with 256gb and this is a lot cheaper, has consistent tracking across the whole screen and has practically zero lag, better than Wacom in my experience. I can see others may see it differently, but for me there is no competition.
@JamesJulier-Artist

@zycane

@@JamesJulier-Artist A4 is only 2480x3508 pixels, in procreate. try bump it up to the 5000+ region, which many actually do in other programs, because with A4, there isn't much room to grow in details. although now with the latest procreate change, you can finally resize it larger, which will happen a lot more often than you seemingly want to admit. prior it was normally to copy a flattened layer and bring it to a higher canvas, when you needed more pixel room. It goes sharply down to the 20's and if you go beyond 6k, you start going under than 20, and if you want to reach 8k pixels on a width or height, you dip below 10 layers, you freaking quickly spend layers on clip masks(just in) and prior to clip masks, it was locked alphas or masks.

Great. Thanks for that. Now I know there isn't any point in me upgrading from the 2017 version. It boils down to a different build and essentially no performance increase. I considered it at first thinking it would somehow be better in terms of its functionality as a drawing device lol.

Everything is in my case so I don’t lose anything. But again a really good price of hardware. I do have a cheaper alternative stylus which is exactly like the Apple Pencil 2 and all you do is charge it for 90 minutes then the battery lasts for 12 hours the build is really solid, and has the Matt finish it is made by Cisirun and paid £24.84 for it and it does come with 2 spare nibs and it doesn’t require Bluetooth all you do is tap the top of the stylus then a blue light comes on and that is it, connects straight away.

I don’t think its much of an issue but I don’t really know for sure
@old_time_fun_with_disney7881

The answer to both of those questions is no. In response to your first question, keeping the Apple Pencil, or any Apple product, charged after the battery is full is not an issue. Apple designs their products to stop sending electrical signals to the device once the battery reaches full capacity. In response to your next question, it actually is worse if you let the battery drain before charging it. The battery in each Apple device can handle up to a certain amount of charge cycles. A charge cycle is a full battery charge from 0% to 100%. For example, if your Apple Pencil, iPad, or any other device's battery is at, let's say 50%, then charging it will take one half of a charge cycle. Letting your battery drain causes more charging cycles to be wasted, causing your battery to become much more worse than normal. Sorry for the long reply, it's not the easiest question to explain.

They do function the same for the most part, apart from the double tap. The matt finish is the least of the changes, the pairing and charging is the key change, as it is much preferable to store. I've not once had to think about the battery level on the Pencil 2 yet because it is always fully charged when I need it. Pairing and charging has become something that requires no thought at all now. That for most is not probably enough to spend the extra, but once you are used to it, you would never want to go back.

Really disappointing that the new standard iPad doesn't support the Pencil 2. I've been waiting to get an iPad because I assumed the next standard version would use the newest model.

Daaamn it! I was hoping to save money and buy the cheaper pencil as the hardware seems to be the exact same but that the new one has some nicer features like a magnet and the double tap. Alas I cannot do that

2nd gen pencil breaks If you drop it. There’s a sensor inside. I dropped my pencil on the 3rd day and after that day, it no longer worked.

In pretty sure plugging in the Apple Pencil into an iPad was so in case you were not near any areas where there are chargers to charge your pencil . And yes it is a VERY weird design but it has a use on the first one though I do say it is much easier to charge the second gen pencil
