I have an Ultra 1 and a Garmin Forerunner 945, I’m running the Chicago Marathon in 2 weeks and I’m not sure on which watch to use for the race! Any recommendations on which one is better in terms of GPS accuracy?

(Michael here) I’m actually running Chicago as well, and I’ve got a Garmin 935, which I’ve found very accurate over the years, and the Ultra 2. I think I’m going to go with the Ultra. Both Alex and I have wear tested the Ultra for well over 1,000 miles each, and I find it quite accurate. I’ve done a bunch of side-by-side testing with a Garmin 265 on routes I know really well and have mapped, and they are pretty much identical in their outputs. I will say that Chicago is a tricky race for GPS accuracy. At the start it can be a struggle to get an accurate signal with 45,000 of your running friends trying to do the same, and the first couple of miles go under an overpass and then between a bunch of towers. I try not to stress too much about accuracy in those stages, and then just eyeball a mile marker once I’m clear of the towers so that I can get a sense of how much deviation I’m working with. It’s also tough to run the tangents perfectly in a WMM, as the course can be crowded, so keep that in mind. I just use the watch to give me feedback on my overall pace so that I’m not running too fast in the half! Good luck in Chicago! It’s a fun one!

Great video guys has helped me deliberate whether to upgrade from Apple Watch 6, but I’m a runner and concerned about the pace glitch you mentioned! Is this new to the Ultra 2 or is it endemic with the earlier Apple Watches?

Thanks Chris! Seems endemic, as of now.

I don’t get the pace issue on the first K. Says I’m just as slow on the 1st K as I am on the last! 😂

Would be nice to have cadence in Strava! Also, battery wide. You can get 2 nights and 3 full days if you don’t have the screen always on active (wake time 15 secs).

Yes, the stamina is excellent. I’m a sucker for that screen, though 😅

How does this compare to the normal series Apple I watch ?

Hey! It’s Alex. The short answer: more frills. More power, and functionalities for runners and everyday use. The Ultra 2 is for people who want the whole package, and who don’t mind paying for the frills. The Series (now we’re at 9) will help you save money and does the basics really well (pace, time, GPS, phone connectivity, etc). More details here: www.apple.com/ca/watch/compare/

The Bevel app has saved my Apple Watch Ultra from the trash can. Garmin-esque design and good data tracking.

I have an AWU and I love it, but I have come to the conclusion that it is not a great running watch for serious runners. Lots of small issues which add up to making it a pain to use. Random screen touches from your jacket, HealthKit does not work with workouts. Watch randomly requires a reboot before Healthkit works. Lack of map support. Non intuitive gestures for stop/start/pause/segment. Action button randomly stops working. Dial randomly becomes stiff and is hard to rotate. More also. It has become so frustrating that I now also run with a Coros as a backup.

Interesting. For those who just want the basics (pace, time, GPS, heart rate), there is certainly simpler stuff out there than Apple Watch Ultra 2.

The best way to use apple watch and strava seems to be to use the native Workout app on the watch and then let Strava import that from Apple Health after the fact. Apple gives its app the best GPS access, will not have that issue you described with the pacing, and generally has a more accurate GPS trace. The technical reason for this may be battery life - it doesnt want 3rd party apps to have the highest resolution GPS because it drains battery.

Hm.. that is exactly how I upload my runs to Strava too, but I keep having that issue (as do others). You don't find there to be GPS anomalies at the start of your runs, or if you ever stop and start your watch mid-run?

@@marathonhandbook Hmm - yes I have had that experience before. I realize now I actually try not to ever pause because of these sorts of reasons and when I do I try and pause/unpause in the same spot, and will let it sit a few seconds before resuming. None of which is ideal. Your point stands! Thanks for replying! :)

Start button will not work with STRAVA, but will with workout.
