Good comparison. I’m sure Apple looked at Garmin for inspiration for the Ultra. I am sure they looked at the market in general. It sounds like for a first try, Apple did a decent job. As with everything, it’ll improve over time. I have a little doubt the Ultra will outsell the entire sports watch market because of Apple’s cachet as well as the features it brings from the standard version of it.

I've had Garmin gadgets for a while now. Starting with my cycling computer 820 to the 830. Then I bought the forerunner 245 for a decent price and fell in love with the features. Subsequently I purchased the forerunner 945 which I currently have. I cannot speak for the Apple Watch since I've never had one but I do have apple products. And it's the right choice. Apple has good apps and they work fast, but everything is scattered in different places. The watch is not independent, it can't do a lot of things without a phone. In the rain or with gloves on, it's impossible to use them at all. I have epix pro 2 now and I wanted to upgrade to apple watch ultra since I have an iPhone and macbook, it was a big mistake :) and battery is not the biggest problem.

I have had Series 2 and Series 5 Apple Watch. I liked the style and the functions. I did not keep them because they just suck for endurance training. The Ultra fixes some of those issues, BUT I don’t like the look of it. I would rather just keep my Garmin that is the best work out watch. Not to mention, when I did have my Apple Watches I would start getting distracted on my watch apps as if I were on a phone. The limited smart watch capabilities of the Garmin is a BENEFIT.

Yes. Not enough people are talking about this. It doesn’t matter what the watch can do; Apple Health still has an enormous gap to make up over Garmin Connect. Heck, I have custom workouts in Garmin Connect that I created in 2010 and I’m still using them on my Epix today. And as long as Apple Health can only be accessed on an iPhone, that’s an instant non-starter. I create custom navigation courses and workouts in GC in the browser on my MacBook Pro and send them to whatever Garmin device it’s destined for. Not to mention the detailed post-activity data analysis. There’s no way I’m going to be hunching over an iPhone for all of this. Apple still has an awful lot of ground to make up.

I didn't hear you mention, but one big difference is lack of aggregated data. Apple Health and Fitness apps are separately required to search for certain things. And there is no available web platform for analyzing or comparing. Huge plus for Garmin. Also, Apple doesn't "do" anything with all the metrics it gathers. Body battery, training readiness, performance condition, sleep score, etc. are examples of Garmin setting a baseline and they letting you know how you are doing. Edit: to Des’ credit, he has mentioned it before.

For me the major benefit of AW Ultra is stand alone cellular connectivity - so that I can take it for a run or bike ride without iPhone in the pocket. Now I have AW4 SS with cellular but the weak LTE signal in rural areas drains battery pretty fast. Still I like it that I can go for a walk with my dog in the forest and still be connected in case of emergency. I could not do it with Garmin. I would really like a review of AW Ultra in such scenario: take it on a bike ride without iPhone and see how long the battery lasts, or how fast it drains. This would be the ultimate test. I imagine the long distance runners would appreciate running with just a watch and still be connected instead of having to keep with them the iPhone.

Reviewers keep saying how the Epix and Ultra AMOLED displays look great in full sunlight. The truth is, they still pale in comparison to the display on a Fenix 7 in full sunlight. For those of us who do mostly outdoor activities, I believe the Fenix 7 is still the better choice. And the battery life is much longer, weeks longer. However, for indoor use, I switch to a watch with an AMOLED display. The other thing reviewers don't spend much time discussing is the fact that Ultra requires an iPhone. For the 50% of us who don't have iPhones, that more than doubles the cost of the Ultra. And, more importantly, there are a lot of people out there who want nothing to do with Apple. Garmin on the other hand works fine with both systems, although Apple intentionally limits some of the functionality.

After I started cycling and now with electronic shifting, heart rate monitor, power meter and radar lights, it’s apparent that the Apple Watch is totally self contained - no support of ANT+ and no import of any data of these sensors, also no export of its own data to any other devices. A basic Garmin 530 Head unit aggregates all the data and analyses it for me, also connected to Strava. Apple Watch is a very good smartwatch (I wear it every day) but it’s not up to the standard as a sport watch, and I don’t see Apple putting actual resources in this area. On these few days, I have a few times which I nearly placed an order for the Ultra due to it being available for pick up. But when I think that it doesn’t change anything for my cycling training, I gave up buying and will keep my current Series 7 for another year.

Very useful feature comparison. As this is Apple's first "ultra" iteraction of the watch product, I would expect them to continue increasing feature sets (ie: vs Garmin and others). As for features, I wonder that Apple must consider its third-party app ecosystem when including base features in WatchOS, striking a balanace somewhere.
@incredibilistic

I was coming here to say the same thing. It's very likely that the reason a lot of the features that are native to other sports watches is that Apple might have to toe the line between making a very capable watch that can do a ton of things while not excluding their software partners. Apple doesn't want to be accused of taking money out of app developers' pockets. And yes, I also agree that if this is Apple's first foray on this type of device that in a few years it will be even more capable and more of a threat to Garmin and others. It's only a matter of time before they dominate the extreme sports market smartwatch market as their first entry is usually a way to test the waters to ensure there's a market for a product and then proceed to introduce more features to ice the competition.

It is completely annoying and the only way to stop it is to take off the Apple Pay, but then it still won’t read my heart rate. My Garmin Fenix 7x sapphire solar’ heart rate only works if I push it below the knob on my wrist, but the Garmin pay always works and the watch never locks on me. Also, the Apple Watch doesn’t count reps in the gym and that’s ridiculous! I where my Garmin to support me on Workouts and the Apple ultra for day to day. When I’m not working out, I strap the Garmin to my ankle so I can still get the metrics. Not to mention the battery life is so much better on the Garmin I’m an amateur athlete, but my workouts can last up to 6 hours with a long run, boxing, biking and weights. I also compete in ultramarathons, and I will never trust my Garmin for that.

I went to Garmin from AW then came back to Ultra. Right now, as a runner I have no reason to stay with Garmin. I don't do crazy 100 miles ultra, so I don't need like 100 hours of battery. Right now, paired with Bluetooth HR strap and Stryd foot pod I got every dynamic runner metric I want, plus LTE that allows you to stream Podcast, make calls and reply msg or email after workout, stream KZitem Music or whatever apps that Garmin will never have. Also, the whole eco system if you are an Apple user is just too convenient.

currently use an epix and yeh its great, had a fenix 6x before it and safe to say im a garmin fan, was looking at the ultra watch as i do typically like apple products, use a 14pro max, use ipads etc but when it comes to a watch i do need to have that no need to think about battery before putting it on, or knowing i can wear it overnight and not have to worry about its battery in the morning, the epix just about does that for me but i do see noticeably worse battery life than my previous fenix, still never a need to worry though. I also like the knowledge that in 12 months my watch will have seen probably 30 battery cycles wheras something like the ultra even with its better battery than previous will still see 200 plus charges a year i reckon if not more if you daily charge to ensure it will last any activity you have that day. I think that's a big advantage that's rarely credited, the garmin watches will simply last longer, even if they lose a day off the charge a year its still like 15 days so you wont notice, you will notice a day dropping off your apple watch. apple watch ultra looks amazing though, just lacks that extra depth the garmin interface has for me.

You mentioned that the battery life seems worse, there was a firmware version that drank the battery life recently which Garmin have fixed with a new one (9.36). It's worth checking which firmware version you have and updating if it's not 9.36 as it fixed that battery drain issue along with some other stuff.

The advantage of AW Ultra is that it likely has a more capable chip inside it, with a more malleable operating system, and therefore will receive more updates in the future to fill in the gaps. So what's missing today, might be present in the future. Technically this isn't the Ultra's strength rather an Apple strength. Hardware and software in harmony.

While heart rate accuracy is slightly better on the Ultra the GPS accuracy goes to the Epix and Fenix. Either will be just fine though and both will provide meaningful feedback and neither are wildly inaccurate. I'd make your decision more on usability and feature sets based on your preference on sports features vs smartwatch features.

Apple nailed it with their first shot at a fitness watch. Plus the $800 price point is crazy good. The main thing is, Garmin designed the Epix and Fenix as a sports watch with smart features. Apple designed their watch as a Smartwatch. Nothing can change that, only can both manufacturers blur the lines, to which they are getting much better at. However if someone was a photographer, a client would be shocked if they turned up at a wedding with an iPhone instead of a DSLR, despite the iPhone taking excellent pictures, it will be unlikely to ever beat the performance of a true DSLR because it wasn't ever designed to be camera first. Same goes for could an Fenix or Epix beat a Garmin Edge in cycling? No chance. Could a Fenix or Epix beat a Garmin Descent for diving? No chance Could a Fenix/Epix ever beat an Apple Watch at phone calls, texts from a watch? No chance Same goes for Apple Watch, it will get close, even closer in next few years but Garmin or sports watch providers will likely always beat it because their primary aim is for a specific sport.

I had the Epix 2 for two months and I sent it back. I am 6'2" 240 and have decent size wrist, but to get the body metrics to read I had to have the band pretty tight. I developed sores that would never heal. It also sucks tracking lap swimming. I would swim 3000 yards and it would be off by several 100 yards in the tracking. I also had the battery die in a 7.5 hr bike ride. I have had older apple watches that track my swimming much better. But the battery does suck on the apple. I ordered the Ultra hoping it will meet my needs. I just wasn't happy with a $1000 Garmin.

@valdirtotal

This comparison is very complicated because, as mentioned, the Apple Watch has full interaction with the iphone and the Garmin does not. The Apple Watch's software is infinitely better built than Garmin's. The Epix is slow, has several bugs, and tons of limitations as a smartwatch. Just look at how slow the map is loaded in Epix or even to change a watchface. Everything on the Apple Watch flows much more dynamic and faster. And it's exactly this software limitation that allows the Epix to have more battery life. Which for me is irrelevant since charging a smartwatch is not building a rocket. The only advantage I see for Garmin is the ability to follow the map in real time while you exercise. And, it's rounded and black. If you prefer. I had both and I can tell it's really hard to get rid of all the interaction that the Apple Watch can provide.

I returned the Ultra and am upgrading to an Epix after years with the 6s. I tried to find apps to replace Garmin connect but it’s a pain and I’d end up paying these super annoying subscriptions to all these third party apps. I don’t want to go piecing together app after app just to replicate what I have with garmin. Also, some of the apps I really wanted on Ultra like AllTrails turned out to be garbage on a watch. In the end the Ultra is just redundant to your phone instead of being a very capable fitness and outdoor watch out of the box. Oh well.
