You can remove the front dashboard slightly where it hides the torq screw. Pull it gently and it gives you plenty of space to undo it with a screwdriver. Thirty seconds rather than sweating. Great video though. 😊

Thank you Mr T! Very great advice! Pinned it! I should have realized this. It is just doesn't make sense to design the trim like we thought 😅 I also learned a lot from this work!

If you have the EVO style, turn the toggle switch down 1 to 4. Mines a 2018 i3. If you only have it down from 1-3 then the screen wont turn on for the EVO style.

Couldn't you add something to the sides the sharp support beam, like thick tape or something to avoid the cables being cut?

Hello Mike you are right about it. However, that workshop was lent to us so we were not fully prepared for this work which we never had experience about it. I am thinking about the foam cushion stickers which are commonly used for chairs/desks/doors, can be applied for this problem 🤗

Great Tutorial and a nice piece of videomaking. Thank you! One question: Why can I not install the decoder next to the head unit and use the existing LVDS-cable to the screen? Then there is no need to put an additional power cable to the front? There is a lot of space under the rear seats, isn´t it? I think there is a Carplay/Android Auto-Set available for other BMW models that provide a short cable between head unit and decoder and still use the existing LVDS-cable to the screen? I think I could live with Wlan Antenne and Video/HDMI cable close to the back seats. What do you think?
@funcarsgoodpeople
Жыл бұрын
Hi RME thank you very much! And I am amazed by your idea because I never thought about this. Brilliant! Yes you can leave the decoder under the rear seat alongside the head unit. Thus leaving the front part of the interior untouched. Man this is really an optimized idea 👍👍👍

RME - I've read that this method only works on the i3 with the smaller screen. Apparently the i3 is very sensitive to the amount of power/signal going up to the front, especially with the larger screen as it draws more power. Anyone with the larger screen (stock, not added after the fact), gets a "no signal" error if they try this method.

@@davidhoffman90 Hi RME thank you very much for this information! Really professional aspect! I'd say that the signal output spec of the decoder may be lower than that of the original headunit, leading to signal/voltage loss when a longer routing of the video cable is used. Very interesting!

Did you guys disconnect the 12v battery and the HV battery disconnect switch in the front of the car? Or were you able to do this work “live”?

Hello Nokmaar, we did this work "live." But you are right with disconnecting all the batteries. I agree that is the most precautious and careful way to do the electricity works. Thanks for the comment!

How we can leverage the HDMI cable in the device ? Can we connect input connection and watch it on the screen ?
@funcarsgoodpeople

Hi Amer, We haven't used this function yet but there is an input option of HDMI on the decoder menu so we think the answer is yes!

Would this work with a right hand drive (UK) i3?
@funcarsgoodpeople
13 күн бұрын
Hello dopiaza I think yes because the decoder is independent of driver side. However, I heard some i3 with small screen is not compatible. So please carefully check the product information and your model year!

Mine used to work fine. But then it started to randomly not turn on and sometimes turn on. it started to show me only black screen. Now when I press menu button it shows me night sky with the car logo and CARPLAY written underneath, and it stays on that screen. How do I make it work again?
@funcarsgoodpeople
Жыл бұрын
Hi George thank you for the question. I am assuming you are talking about an aftermarket Carplay or AAdecoder. The first thing I can guess is overheating of the decoder. Even BMW headunit can freeze in such case. Please check that the decoder is working in an environment that spores not get too hot. Then try to reset the decoder via a button on its body. If the situation persists, the decoder is likely bad ☹️

What backup camera do you recommend to use with the decoder based on ease of install?
@funcarsgoodpeople
Жыл бұрын
Hi Sean thank you for the question! Most decoders support RCA video input so I'd say look for an RCA backup camera and stick it to the rear window (inner side.) Such RCA backup camera only has power input and RCA video output so wiring should be pretty simple. This can a quick hack if you don't have time and you need to use the car a lot 😅 However, I'd still recommend the OE type backup camera which requires removing some trims and parts to run the harnesses. Have fun DIY! 🤗

@@funcarsgoodpeople do you know the part number for a 2015 bmw i3?
@funcarsgoodpeople
Жыл бұрын
Hi Sean the OE backup camera has part number 66539475687. Please search "bmw 66539475687" then you will see how it looks like. However this camera uses the connector interface for the NBT system, which may not be compatible with aftermarket decoders. Please also look up "bmw i3 rca reverse camera" for the decoders.
