Sad, but true. It's the oldest repair scam in the book. The repair people strip parts from used or junked machines and try to pass them off as new. As you stated, once they have a used part in hand, they can remove your good part and sell it to someone else. There is a corollary to this: The repair folks diagnose the problem, order a brand new part, put in a used part or don't do anything at all, charge you for it, then sell the part to someone else. You end up buying the new part that does not go in your repair. Another scam along these lines is the repair person has an old machine that he has hauled away. They use your new repair part to fix the machine, then sell the used, repaired machine to a third party.

I don't know if your capacitor was bad or not, but anyone selling "private stock" and "you pay me, not the company" is a crook, flat out. If he has an arrangement with his company to do that , the company owner is nuts. I've been a reputable service tech, in the trades for nearly 40 years, and I've seen my share of scammers, grafters and flat out crooks. They all **** me off. The guy selling his "private stock" is ripping off his employer if not his customer. No way I would do business with that guy. Call the company and let them know they have a crook on the payroll. If they are an honest company, they'll appreciate the tip, but if they keep him on, don't do business with them ever again. There is a known problem with bad capacitors in everything from personal electronics, motors, appliances, HVAC, pumps, even the stereo in my car. Easy to repair if you know how to. Refrigerator caps can be checked with a cheap meter. Just about all multi-meters today have a capacitance checker onboard.

I call a guy to repair my washing machine... The problem was simply a drive belt. He opens it up, removes the belt, puts a new one and goes on to test it. Motor doesn't spin and he says motor is bad too.i knew the motor was good. I tell him to step away and I inspect it. He pulled and broke the wires coming out of the motor. I kick him out and call the company. Next thing I know, he got fired for it. He seemed to have been running a scam where he tells people he'll replace motor, but in reality he swaps them across customers.

I've never had to replace a capacitor in a refrigerator. Ever. You said the guy is from a company and that he offered to have you pay him instead of the company. That leads me to suspect he was attempting to pocket money on the side.

Another thing that happened to me, was, our filter stopped working suddenly after 'servicing'. The reverse osmosis guy was called to do the fixing. He disconnecting the power supply, powered it and started to short it out to damage it while telling my mom is a way of testing it. I walk into the kitchen and catch him and make him get a new supply.

Sounds like the old TV repair scam. TV repair man goes to the supply house and buys a rebuilt in box CRT. You call the repair men to fix your set. Repair man comes in and looks your TV over and tells you, You need a new CRT. He swaps out your good CRT with the rebuilt and hands you a whopping bill. Repair man takes your CRT puts it in the box, Repair man goes to the next house and sells your CRT to the next sucker. When I went to TV repair school back in the day we where tought this trick and lots of others.

Scammers are everywhere... As a young guy fresh out of optometry college, I was hired by an established O.D. to help him in his busy practice. Early on, this scammer told me that he would ask patients if they had high blood pressure, then tell them that, due to the high pressure, they would need to have their spectacle prescription changed every year. He confided that he never corrected a person's vision to the best endpoint, but would, instead, leave him/her just a bit under corrected, so he could sell a new pair of glasses, following every exam. (I have often wondered why he thought I was as dishonest as he was.) Because a few spectacle lenses were breaking, following the legal requirement that they be tested by dropping a steel ball on them, he told me to stop testing the lenses, and just sign off that the lenses had been tested. I told him that, if my signature was on the line, I would make sure the lenses had been tested. He fired me for being honest.

Sadly there are a lot of people in business who think like that. In the long run they don't do as well as people who treat their customers fairly, but it often takes a lifetime for it to catch up with them. Karma. I'm glad you stood up for yourself, because if there was a complaint, I can promise you he would have said you were doing it on your own, that he never told you to cheat. I've literally had 1 boss go to prison and several colleagues get investigated (and then fired so the company can keep up "appearances") for doing things they were sure they would never get caught at.

Instead of giving my trade a bad name you should call out the name of the company or companies who did this. I make suggestions to customers like change this part because you may be calling me back and I'd hate to charge them for labor twice when I can replace the part then. That is only when I know something looks worn or have knowledge of a part that usually goes bad. Professional and honest companies don't need to upssell their customers. We keep them coming back with fast, quality and honest service.

Unless people know how the scam works, how can they know if they are being scammed? Reporting 1 company does not inoculate a customer against the next bad company. It would be better if people like you in the biz alerted consumers to bad apples in your business.

@@tsbrownie how would I know another company is ripping people off? I didn't say not to alert people to a scam. Just be clearer that this one company did this. Trades in general get a bad wrap. Most companies are honest and this video doesn't explain that it was one company and insinuates that it is a scam throughout the appliance repair industry. Friends have actually told me they bought new because they didn't want to get ripped off by a repairman. That in turn means we throw more appliances into landfills and use more energy to make new ones.

Similar to HVAC techs who tell customers their condenser has "gone bad" and needs to be replaced when, in fact, it's just the capacitor that's bad. A $10.00 part (which almost anyone can replace) becomes a $2300.00 bill. Thanks for an excellent video/warning! --- Old Matt

Well the sad truth is a lot of repair people get commission off parts they sell. I never did or had had too in my field. Plumbers, HVAC, appliance repair technicians even mechanic sometimes.

I think this same thing happened with our Samsung cleaning robot. They replaced the sensor board when the sensors were just covered in dust. I will test that theory next time there is a problem because I kept the old sensor board and cleaned it. If I put it in and it works, I am going to write someone a nasty letter.
