Do you mind saying what the rubber black end pieces are and where they were found? As well as the metal pipes pieces? I’ve built a decent turner myself but I’m not thrilled with the football on the PVC. I just feel like as if it’s sturdy enough.
@VioletDoodlesBoutique
5 жыл бұрын
The black on the ends of the pipe are actually tesa tape. It is a soft tape meant for wiring. It was just what we had on hand. We used it to make the PVC fit a little tighter on the pipe but still easy to get it on and off. You can find it on amazon. The pipe is a stainless steel pipe that we bought and had cut down to our specs. He is an engineer and designs machines for a living. It is definitely sturdy and hardy.

2 questions: 1. Are you able to substitute a hair dryer for the heater? 2. Is the vinyl on the other cup to your right underneath the epoxy?
@VioletDoodlesBoutique

I am afraid the hair dryer would blow too hard and not have the heat it needs. Heat guns don't blow very forcefully and get a lot hotter. You can also use a mini torch. All of my vinyl is sealed under epoxy.

Thank you for such a detailed video. I love your work and you are one of the ONLY tumbler makers that stresses the importance of PPE while working with epoxy. I have a quick question: one of the reasons I don’t tape off is because I can’t get my epoxy line smooth enough to my liking. You say that you remove the tape after 20 mins?? How does your epoxy not run down past your line after you remove the tape? Whenever I try, my epoxy is still very flowy and the epoxy drags the glitter down with it, making an ugly uneven line- not smooth at all.
@VioletDoodlesBoutique
4 жыл бұрын
Every epoxy is different. You may need to let it spin longer. I have found my sweet spot between 20 and 60 minutes. Then to get the smooth line, I wipe it with a baby wipe.

Your epoxy looks amazing. I’m struggling with mini craters come morning after applying my epoxy. I think I have figured out that it’s from bubbles and maybe over working it on the cup. I tried a heat gun and still got a few small craters. Do you warm your epoxy at all or keep your room at a certain temp? I’ve tried warm (over 70) and cooler (under 65), it seemed to thin when it was warmer, but I’ve read everywhere warmer is better lol. Any suggestions would be amazing!!!
@VioletDoodlesBoutique
5 жыл бұрын
Those dimples could be from several factors: temp, amount of epoxy used, oils from handling, the glitter itself, bubbles... I don't warm mine except for the heat gun after applied but I do keep my room warm. Here are my steps: *prep cup- sand and wash with dawn *sometimes basecoat *glitter *seal glitter for chunky or complicated designs *epoxy 1 or 2 times *lightly sand and wash with dawn *decal *wash with dawn again- I never skip this step! *epoxy final coat *wait 3 days and clean cup well with (bare stainless with acetone) and then whole cup with dawn I hope this helps. Let me know! Good luck!

After I sand my cups, I've noticed little imperfections in my epoxy. Like little clear bumps- they look like bubbles but aren't because they don't pop after applying heat. After you wet sanded it what did you use to dry it? a paper towel? microfiber towel?

I glittered just like you did and your directions were spot on and amazing! Thank you! I did have a question on times. When you apply epoxy and you feel it is fully covered. How long do you continue to let it spin? And how long do i leave it sit before i can give it a second coat? Thank you💜
@VioletDoodlesBoutique
5 жыл бұрын
It depends on your epoxy. I will let mine spin for 6-7 hours and then, if it needs another coat before anything else, I will do it then. If it needs a decal or sanded, I wait 12 or more. I will wait 3-5 days before I ship it or deliver it to its new home. I don't like to rush the steps, because it never fails that I will mess it up and have to wait longer to try to fix it.

@VioletDoodlesBoutique

You can use a paint brush or foam brush but they would be single use and can incorporate bubbles. You can also use a silicone makeup spatula and apply it with that but I find those to be more work than just using my hands. The epoxy is self-leveling, so if you get it on the cup as even as you can it will settle and smooth out on its own.

@VioletDoodlesBoutique
4 жыл бұрын
So I went back and did a quick view, it looks like I mixed more than just for that cup. The small bathroom cups hold about 60 total MLs. A general rule of thumb is same number of MLs as the number of OZ of the cup. EX: 20mls total epoxy for a 20oz cup. This is not an exact science but it does help judge. If its a first coat over glitter, it may need more. Over paint or epoxy, less. Once you have several under your belt, you'll get a feel for how much you need. I generally like to make more than I will need. When I say level, I mean the cup needs to be level on the turner. If it is titled, your epoxy will run and pool up. It sounds like that is what you have going on. Keep adjusting the cup until it's level. You can sand the bump down and recoat it. Good luck and thanks for watching.

I would not do it in the main area of the house, especially if you have others in the house, pets or children especially. Some people have very severe reactions to epoxy causing swelling and rashes. It needs to be in a well ventilated area and some require wearing a respirator.

Do you also use the heat gun after you apply the epoxy after the decals?
@VioletDoodlesBoutique

I use the heat gun each time I apply epoxy. It helps pop bubbles and smooths the epoxy for an even layer.

Can you please tell me how long a cup has to stay on a cup turner actually turning? Is there some point where it is cured enough that I can take it off and let it finish without turning so that I can put another cup on? I only have one cup turner.

I usually do mine overnight. If I am in a hurry and trying to load up turners as fast as I can, I will turn for 6 hours and them set it to the side. You have to be careful though, it will still be soft and can leave finger prints (ask me how I know, lol). If you do it too early, the epoxy can slowly run down and create a hump.

You will need to do some research with the requirements for the epoxy you plan to use. Most require a respirator. I won't tell you what is safe for your family, because people have different sensitivities and I would feel terrible if I recommended something that hurt anyone.

How much epoxy do you use for each layer of the cup?
@VioletDoodlesBoutique
5 жыл бұрын
It depends on the size of the cup and if it is going on glitter or a smooth surface. I typically do multiple (4-5) cups at a time and make 60- 90 mls at a time.

Thanks for the sub! You will want to hold off sanding until epoxy. I sand after the 2nd coat of epoxy. If you sand the glitter, you will end up sanding the color right off the flake.

Need to ask. When I apply the two part clear and let it spend for four to six hours I have uneven places. Also some places you can feel the glitter. What am I doing wrong ?
@VioletDoodlesBoutique
4 жыл бұрын
That is a common issue. It could be due to several factors. If it is over a chunky glitter, spray seal it first and that will help. You can go over it again and it should be more evenly covered. Sand after two coats and wash well with Dawn. Then coat again. Good luck.

What if I don’t have a turner? Will all the apply just drip down to the bottom and all my hard work would’ve been for nothing?? Ps. I’m very new to this I haven’t even tried it yet but I want to lol

Epoxy is self-leveling. If you let it run down, it will mostly run off and be wasted. Without a turner, you can hand turn. There are several videos from other makers on how to hand turn. It is time consuming but possible.

What causes fish eyes? How do you fix them? Also, do you mod lodge under all of your glitter it fo you ever epoxy under?
@VioletDoodlesBoutique
4 жыл бұрын
Fisheyes are caused by debris or residue that hasn't been cleaned off.If you already have them, lightly sand your cup and wash it WELL with Dawn. Dry it with a coffee filter or microfiber towel and reepoxy. I use MP and epoxy to apply glitter. It depends on the technique I am working on.

Yep, it will start to set up in about an hour, harden almost completely within 6 or 7 hours, and fully cured in 3-5 days.

Hello I am a new subscriber and I love your work it's so beautiful but I have a question is it harmful after it cures because my niece wants it really really bad and she's 6 years old she wants pink and purple glitter Tumblr and they also have one year old and she is a very curious little girl she has to taste everything so I am afraid and if that is toxic or harmful for babies if you can like answer me that question I will be very grateful and the other question is can I use epoxy on a tumbler and do very thin layer and stick my rhinestone to it will it be better than using regular glue like e6000 or something like that.😊
@VioletDoodlesBoutique

As long as the epoxy you are using states on the packaging that it is food safe/FDA Compliant and it is mixed properly, it is safe after it cures (3-10 days depending on the epoxy). If it is sticky or tacky at all, it is not cured or wasn't mised correctly and is not safe for anyone to use. Both of my kids have several but I don't let them have them until they are fully cured. For rhinestones, either E6000 or epoxy is great for gluing them down. Do not epoxy over the rhinestones though, they will lose their sparkle.

Love you videos I wanted to ask this questions if you can please answer :)Do you always sand it between the 2 layers of epoxy?do you put the sticker before layer one? How much epoxy do you use for a 30oz tumbler? And do you always use the clear acrylic coating spray paint before putting the first layer of epoxy?also do you always do 2 layers of glitter if you do how much time do you wait for each one to dry? Thank you! 🤗
@VioletDoodlesBoutique

Thank for watching. I will try to answer all of your questions. I don't sand the first layer ever. If the glitter is poking through, you will take off the color. I typically sand the second coat to make sure it is smooth for the vinyl. The vinyl is applied after a smooth coat of epoxy (usually the 2nd coat but sometimes I am lucky and can do it on the first coat of epoxy). For a 30oz cup, I would make 30mL of epoxy. Now, I typically have several to do at a time, so I mix more. I only seal if it is more than a two color ombre or an intricate design. Sometimes I use the acrylic gloss and sometimes Rustoleum 2K clear gloss. Both work great. I almost always do two coats of glitter. I like the glitter to be covered and true to its intended color for the design. Black glitter, I can usually get away with a black base coat and one coat of glitter. I will let ModPodge dry for at least 30 minutes before I go on.

You're welcome. There are not really any hard rules with this hobby. Play around and have fun. The only things I would make sure you do is follow the safety guidelines with your chemicals. But, otherwise, experiment and get creative.
