The one thing I really wish my Z6II had (besides 10 bit internal video) are the buttons on the left hand side like the D500. For me personally I'd rather a camera that is a little larger like the D500 size which is why I'll be going for the Z9 presuming all the specs are spot on. Im also hoping they bring a D500 mirrrorless sooner rather than later.

I really agree with your assessments! I also think Nikon should also move the top dial to the right, and the small LCD to the left. My Z5's dial is on the right, and it is so easy to turn the dial especially when I am using my large Sigma 150-600 lens. Nikon should allow pressing the joystick to be programmed as the "OK" function. Nikon should bring the DSLR (i.e. D850, D5, etc) feature where you can press different button to enable different AF area/size. Nikon should also allow the photographer to program Aperture priority auto shutter speed (very slow, slow, normal, fast, very fast) to a dial. The Z9 should at the very least provide better autofocus than the 2017 Sony a9. As someone who have shot the a9 for almost 4 years, revisiting the Z6II, there are still a lot disappointing aspects. I later bought the Z5 for focus stacking. None of the Nikon Z cameras can provide me the confidence my old camera can. I am planning to buy the a1 soon, but to me the Z9 is still relevant because Nikon's original 200-400mm f/4 is significantly cheaper than competition, and I have been using it with my D750, which buffers up too quickly, and the Z5/Z6II shooting action is still left too much to be desired with the FTZ.

+1 on your entire list of requests Hudson. I would add the following: 1) simply moving the joy stick should automatically bring up the tracking box in Auto Area AF mode. Pressing the joystick should cancel it. 2) ability to use rear lcd to move the cursor as well as the joystick. 3) real calibrated distance scale on the viewfinder with DOF marked as you focus manually (like with Fujifilm). 4) Astromode where all OSD information is in red to preserve your night vision 😀.

A lot of great points brought up in this video. I feel Nikon should take advantage of mini led tech for their new camera. A couple of uses would be the button illumination and rear lcd. If they reduce the bezels of the rear monitor they could make more space for buttons. Also, the tech saves space, battery life, and brightness.

Great video and dialogue, we really are spoiled! Coming from my 3 day old experience with the Z6ii a couple additions to those mentioned. First let the "OK" for changing the iMenu items be optional. I see the need for it, but would like to be a selectable option. I'm loving this camera but switching AF modes (compared to Sony) and making on-screen changes (compared to my RP) are slower. Secondly (though controversial) is the variable tilt rear-screen... I miss it with every photo. Perspectively speaking I love the road less traveled and really need the variable screen. I would love to see Nikon traverse a road never traveled and offer both screen types! I agree with the play button placement and clear display changes mentioned. I would also like the exposure comp button replaced, I can barely find it. I would same the same for F1 and F2. I can find them but had to change it to just turn on/off finding it near impossible to adjust the front wheel while holding the F1/F2 simultaneously. Would personally love a rear dial on the D Pad for ISO and D-Pad customization options like Sony has. Lastly I'd like to see slightly more feedback and electronic indentation on the lens control rings. Setting my 24-70 control ring to Exposure Comp was awesome, but I bump it all the time and had to just turn it off. If there were an option on future lenses for there to be simulated clicks and a little more resistance it would be a great tool! If anyone reads all this, I commend you! :D. Thanks again Hudson, looking forward to joining one of your photographic escapades!

In the vein of your discussion on using the Z's built-in mike to switch between the red/green/blue subjects (marker 6:25 in video), I have wondered why Nikon hasn't incorporate a mode to activate the shutter release by speaking "CAPTURE," as in a friend's Samsung cellphone. This would negate having to use a shutter delay to allow tripod mounted camera movement to diminish after manually pushing the shutter release for a time exposure when a remote release is not available.

Lately I’d been thinking cameras should have more voice recognition so interesting to hear your thoughts on that. I was just commenting this morning about the redundant Playback button - so here is what I would suggest... make the +/_ exp comp button programmable and use this for the playback, then (with S lenses) programme the additional ring to be the +/_ exp. comp button. The latter I suggest anyway as it works seriously well especially if you also have the histogram showing in the view finder. I really agree with you re optional grip. I am like you and don't miss a vertical grip. Supply a second battery with the camera even as part of a kit would sort he issue out. Two-button format - absolutely. I can't understand why this was taken out! Buttons lighting up needs to be put back onto the on/off lever. I can't fathom why they removed this on the current Zeds. You are both so correct that, to get better in photography (read anything) there are only three words to understand... practice... practice... practice! Clear view (with histogram for me) is a must - so simple to do as you correctly say.

Your wish list is super solid, there's a few things you mention that I never thought of. Subject tracking deserves its own mode. We also need touch-n-drag focus point selection, using the touch screen like a trackpad. Especially when using the EVF. Currently we can only tap on the rear screen when the EVF isn't in use. One really odd thing I noticed between my Z6 and Z6II - frame rate selection on the Z6II can no longer be changed with dials - only using the touch screen, or using the multi-selector & OK button. Takes more time now. Great vid, thanks! 🙂📷

I finally like to see a real RAW-histogram implemented (real time in liveview/playback/overexposure warning) and not JPEG based histogramm. So many times the camera mistakenly warns from over exposure despite a flat picture profile
@HudsonHenryPhoto

I don't think anyone but Phase uses processing power creating a RAW histograms. Those of course are not fast cameras. They are frequently tethered and rarely if ever used for burst action shooting, so why not. More like 4x5 work of old. The mirrorless wars are all about AF tracking and burst speed. Interpreting the tonal info for the raw data in each file alongside building a tiny jpeg for rear screen viewing would tax the processing pipeline, particularly at 20fps. Maybe they could have an option to build a RAW histogram in the playback mode image by image when the processor is mostly idle. That would certainly be good enough for me and cool.

This video is spot on! I'm trying to divorce my D500/D750, but feel like waiting two years. 11 AF modes is crazy. Make what/how to focus on one dial, and the size of the focusing box on the other. This option should work just fine on the Z50/Z5/Z6/Z7 too, because a smaller area requires less processing power than the full area mode. That display option is great because you can limit/disable all the other options to go clean or dirty instantly. Also, save ALL settings (release, picture control, crop) to the user modes! ;)

Well... I don't think that's why Nikon has it there. I think it's because it's been there since the D1 and D70 and they (to their credit) don't mess with our ergonomics unless necessary. Pro youngsters will not be shooting the Olympics or long lens wildlife shoots with their back LCDs on the Z9 any more than those of us over 50 will. It's just a more accurate way to frame and shoot while shutting out the sun glare and distractions outside the frame. And yes, for those of us over 50, the diopter is a critical and key advantage of that EVF and I don't want to move my hand off a long lens barrel to hit it or burn a custom button assignment to put it where it makes better sense. :-)

Agreed. Why is Subject Tracking a sub AF option? Why is it not an option on its own? Why does it disappear as a sub-option when you use one of the other AF modes?
@HudsonHenryPhoto
3 жыл бұрын
I think there's a decent enough reason for that actually. The camera does a fabulous job more often than not picking the subject with no input whatsoever (Auto Area). Subject tracking is a tool you need when that fails. By putting the FN 2 button in charge of activating and deactivating that, it does in effect become a mode that with practice becomes muscle memory to instantly toggle between auto subject tracking acquisition (Auto Area) and manual subject tracking acquisition (Auto Area+subject tracking). Nikon's biggest failure with it right now is that the manual acquisition mode doesn't do a good job when the action gets close, frame filling and erratic. Ironically the auto area without subject tracking does a great job in those situations. The key is activating and deactivating as conditions change (with for example birds in flight). Most people aren't trying that. They stick to the legacy dynamic area mode they recognize from the DSLR and it stinks in the Zs for fast action. Stinks. The way they set up the subject tracking by default with 2 different lower back buttons is crazy. Especially if you are a back button focuser. The thumb is way too busy for that. Move it to the front function button and it's not hard to get dialed.

@@HudsonHenryPhoto I kind of hoped it was that lens. I have it myself and I'm also very impressed by it. The video must have been shot almost wide open to get that background blur? All Nikons Z lenses are in a very unique leuage, but so is the 500mm PF as you also know. Thanks again Hudson!

I would like them to work with a company like foolography and integrate the unleashed functionality. It's too bad we cannot really use BT for enhanced apps. Really like some of the z wireless functions, but there is so much potential. Thanks for this review

And using the unleashed for long time lapses or in cold conditions is another reason for the vertical grip with its ability to hot swap batteries. I do agree that it would b great to have the Foolography functionality built into the camera.

Cathy, just plug a small 10,000 milliamp PD USB power brick into the USB-C port on either Z6ii or Z7ii for time-lapse or any tripod work and you can run all night long in Antarctica without lugging about a redundant grip. I keep two in my camera bag and just plug the body in between handheld shoots to top off when moving between locations. I find instead of taking a dozen batteries on a trip I need 2 now. They're in my links: www.hudsonhenry.com/atslinks I totally support you having an optional grip if you want it, I just don't want it forced on those of us who don't.

In the 60+ years I've been photographing and my 12th Nikon in 40 years...the Z6 II, the more use it, the more I like it. One issue I have is transferring photos from the camera to my MacBook while on the road. If I try to use the "wireless" method, one has to select/send/select/send... GAD. That can take FOREVER. I can't find it but is there a way to "select all" and then "send and forget"? Thanks again!

I bought this CF Express reader. bhpho.to/3fugGMm It's so blazing fast. 100GB goes in a few seconds. :) On mobile with Snapbridge I love being able to set RAW+Jpeg and have 2MP jpegs automatically come in to my tablet or phone via Bluetooth, but I don't wirelessly xfer RAW files to the computer. It's coming, but still clunky. I'm sure with you. Heck a month with the original Z6 ended my DSLR days. :) glad you're enjoying.

@@HudsonHenryPhoto Excellent! I have the card reader! Being an airline pilot instructor, I always think WAY ahead. Sometimes I think I want equipment to do more than it really needs to. Like you, I'm a Mac user also. I'm getting used to LR, PS and ON1. It takes time. I installed a file server myself here in my condo. Now I can upload my daily shoot directly from my MacBook when I travel through an encrypted VPN. It's just one more safety net. Depending on the hotel wifi speed, it might take awhile but I carry my own mini router/hotspot which is always connected to the hotel wifi. I then can have as many devices on the hotel wifi as I want! I used to visit PDX quite a bit as I have a friend and fellow pilot who owns a vineyard in Hood River. Also friends in Helvetia (they have a TV show). Once downtown PDX quits being nuts, I might start coming back to the NW from here in the SE!

Ha. Well the nuts aspect of Portland is very highly over reported by certain networks. It's laughable really. Yes there's been far too much vandalism and noise made by a few loud anarchists that should be either locked up or sent home to thier parents, but it's been 98 percent way out in northeast Portland. Since the Feds stopped tear gassing people downtown and the flag covered trucks stopped rolling through from Idaho looking for trouble and turned their attention to DC instead, the only thing you'd notice different downtown is the increased homelessness and many closed eateries. I take my preschoolers biking and playing in parks all over downtown frequently. The homelessness is a huge problem though. It's bad everywhere I go these days, even small towns, but portland has a major challenge ahead with dealing with it.

In the Z6II/Z7II setup video, you mentioned setting Fn2 for bracketing. In this video you said you set it for action mode. Am I misunderstanding something? As you mentioned though, a dedicated bracketing button, like on the dslrs, would be nice.
@HudsonHenryPhoto

If you watch the whole setup video, you'll find that I switch that in U3 for action photography. U3= S mode, 1250th at start, FN-2 remapped to subject tracking. I don't need bracketing for action, but I need faster access to subject tracking activation and deactivation under a finger with no other purpose. :-)

My Fn1 is DOF preview and Fn2 is either bracketing or subject tracking depending on whether I'm shooting static or moving subjects. I surely would not sacrifice them. On the 70-200 and 14-24, I add play to the lens function buttons. But... We shouldn't need to. It's an obvious time to move it for mirrorless.

Cameras will probably need a GPU or FPGA if they are going to compete with a Skydio drone. I don't see that happening any time soon.
@HudsonHenryPhoto
3 жыл бұрын
Well they dropped dual processors in the ii models. The skydio surely is more compact that a Z9 or even Z7ii. It's also a lot less money, so why wouldn't that be a natural evolution??? I don't disagree with the need, but I think they should be moving on that not making excuses to not do it. The skydio's tracking is mind bending and a full kit is significatly cheaper than even a Z6ii.

@@HudsonHenryPhoto I think it will come down to the price on the BOM vs. Nikon's perceived impact from a sales perspective. It seems to me that Nikon is much more conservative when it comes to embracing transformational technologies. Also, despite the autofocus improvements in the Z7 II and Z6 II, they are still lagging behind Sony and Canon. When I read the tea leaves, my takeaway is the Nikon is not strong at SW development. Skydio drones have been trained with ML models for object detection and assuming Nikon gets the proper HW (GPU or FPGA) they won't have the engineering competence to make full use of it. Nikon is a HW company (evident by the KILLER Z glass they are putting out) that is getting outclassed in an ever-increasing world defined by SW and AI.

i dont see the z9 being competitive with the sony A1 unless the nikon body size is reasonably close to it. With the mirrorless size advantage, I don't think people want to buy into huge clunky systems like the d5 anymore.

The Sony doesn’t have good ergos lol. The A1 is small and light until you throw a 50 1.4, 85 1.4, 100f2, 400 2.8, 600f4 etc etc.
@HudsonHenryPhoto

I think the question may be if the A1 has the same overheating issues as the R5 for the 8k video shooters. I don't have any need for 8k video. I doubt anyone but Hollywood DPs really do, but that's probably a big part of the reason for the bigger body. Heat dissipation. The only thing I miss in the Z6ii and Z7ii is more simplified AF tracking for erratic fast motion that bounces between close up panning and distant motion within the frame. They have modes that work great for both, but not at the same time without learning some AF gymnastics. The quality and ease of the eye detect shows where it should head. I think all the brands have a lot of room to improve here and I want to see Nikon keep moving ahead at the pace they have since releasing the Z7 a few years ago via firmware. It's been utterly phenomenal. I'd rather have such advanced AF tracking functionality with a fabulous low light sensor like the Z6ii has. I don't need the 40+ megapixels required for the 8k in an action camera and the Z7ii is already the perfect portrait, landscape and pano camera for me. So my hope is that after the Z9 comes a Z8 or something that has a smaller MP 4k sensor with whatever AF enhancements they serve up in the Z9 but in a small, cheaper body.
