Many thanks. Love the "Recall Shootings Function". Brilliant. I have just referred to your videos in the description section of my own latest KZitem video which relates to a visit to the Arundel Wetland Centre in Sussex, UK where I successfully shot loads of birds in flight images on my new Z9 thanks to the set up suggestions in your videos.

Great tips, Hudson. Did you happen to know whether you can map the pre release function of 30/120 fps to a function button ? It will be cool if it can do that instead of having to physically turn the dial on the top left in the heat of a moment.

Hudson, the best part is every bank can be setup to recall a unique shooting mode....e.g. I'm pulling action from standard and I pull aperture / low light settings from other modes. This camera is turning out to be a monster.....been using since the 1st week of April

Good tip, Hudson. I actually used this on my D6 in opposite fashion - typically set up for action, I wanted a button to press for single point AF when I needed to zero in on a stationary subject. I’ll probably do the same on the Z9…

agree. thats how i shoot on my Z9 for wildlife.. default is manual with auto iso 20fps, but when animals and birds are fairly static and i want focus to be sharp with more control, i have it mapped to fn2 with recall of single point focus with tracking and shutter priority and single frame shooting.

Montana is my old stompin grounds. I was stationed at Malmstrom AFB for 5 years and married into the State :D. Glacier and Acadia NP's are 2 of my favs nationally. Wild Goose Island on St. Mary's Lake was a repeat subject and "Many Glacier" was one of our favorite places to stay and hike. I would also check out Whitefish and Nancy Cawdrey's Studio, she was my favorite Artist long before I moved to Montana and am now a proud owner of her work. Quaint Bigfork is also not too far a drive but well worth the visit. Majestic area... recommend late June, early July for wild flowers... bring Bear spray and bells :D.

Thank you so much for these videos. I have watched all four more than once and set up the camera as you suggested but a few changes here and there. Would you please comment on the following points? 1. For Action (specifically Wildlife) wouldn't it be better to set the subject as erratic? This is one of the few changes I did to your recommended settings. 2. For wildlife, wouldn't it be better to switch to the Centre-weighted metering? 3. Could you please make a supplementary video on the settings given the release of the FW 2.0? 4. Could you please make a video on how to use the AF system best while photographing small birds with more or less similar coloured backgrounds (eg, a greenish bird with green foliage)? 5. What should be the best settings to preserve the battery charge? In three hours I had lost nearly 60% of the full charge while photographing birds. 6. Is there any way to make the rear LCD monitor "on-demand" like the D-SLRs? The automatic switching between the EVF and the Monitor is not necessary always and it seems to be eating the battery. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thank you again.

The recall shooting function is great, but there's a problem with it: shooting sports, I want to switch from 30fps (action) to single release mode when popping off close faces, equipment, etc. (non-action). When you're based in 30fps and use "Recall Shooting Fuctions (hold)", everything changes EXCEPT the release mode (it stays at 30fps). If you're based in continuous H (20fps) or L (regardless of the fps), it works well and switches the release mode (in my case to Single), just not when you're in 30fps or 120fps. I reported this as a bug to NPS.

Hope the fix it for you guys. I don't' use the jpeg modes, so I didn't even see that. I'm a lossless RAW guy. For me the camera shoots 20fps max. Maybe I'd try it to capture a bullet through an apple or ball off a bat, but otherwise I'm lossless raw only.

Just as a note.. if you don't have a lens on the camera is wont do the mermory recall for some reason. So if you have those settings and hit the fn1 ... it will not change the settings. Put a lens on and it works

Hey Hudson, many thanks for all of your tips. I have a new z9 and for some strange reason, I cannot seem to save my settings. They are programmed in but do not save to the Fn button. I found that the recall settings will not change fps if you are on the jpeg 30. Raw 20 to single raw does work. Too bad because in an action bank, it would be cool to go from raw 20 to jpeg 30 with buffer.

A quick question before I start reprogramming. You suggested Standard and I get it - if an object comes into your frame etc BUT will it work the same, say in Landscape- you see a bird flying into the scene and want to capture it? For me, that’s what happens the most often. Thanks
@HudsonHenryPhoto
2 жыл бұрын
I really only go into my landscape mode on the tripod. I stay in standard and flip settings around as needed when handheld. If I'm on the tripod honing a landscape image, then it's going to take some time to get ready for a bird, but sure. You could easily set it for both banks. I know I don't need it for bank D's Milky Way scenario though. lol!

I've said for ages that instead of cards , internal memory of 1Tb with micro ssd drives is almost upon us. So with this is mind, pre shutter recording is easy. My home security cameras have had this for a few years - they loop memory, but save up to 10 seconds of video if human motion is detected. These cameras cost $50 or less!! C'Mon Nikon !!

At some point the monitor will quit working in auto switch too, just pull the eyepiece off and clean the little sensor above the viewfinder. It gets dirty and the camera thinks you're eye is up there. :)
