My observation is that external aerodynamic efficiency means less internal space efficiency. Note how the current-gen Kia Soul EV does approximately the same in BjØrn's banana box text as the Tesla Model Y, but the Model Y covers a lot more payment to have not much more internal space. One is more externally efficient, the other more eternally efficient. So it depends on your priorities. Personality, with electricity inexpensive and 98% made from renewables where I live, I went with a car that was internally efficient with space instead.

The combo of the two is actually a great set for a two vehicle household. You could take both camping and use the aptera for side trips charged by the cybertruck's 120V outlet. I see the aptera as a fun ultralight sports car (their marketing kinda misses this opportunity); I'll probably be 40 by the time I'd get it so time for that midlife crisis. If the car with all its solar and 100 kwh battery is 1800lb I would expect the minimal base solar 40 kwh version to be more like 1300 (1500 if they use LFP for the short range ones); with tuned wheel motors this thing will out handle any normal sports car.

The Aptera does have an impressively low drag coefficient but that doesn't fully account for the low aerodynamic drag. The drag force is proportional not just to the drag coefficient but also to a reference area, which for cars is generally the projected frontal area. What is often missed in the dimensionless number called Cd in comparisons between vehicles is to multiply it by a known a dimension. That would be the vehicle's frontal area. I believe the Aptera is even more slick than my Tesla Model 3 just because the Aptera has so much less frontal area than the Tesla. Will I want one? No, but I certainly did back when there were not Tesla's in a price range I could contemplate. Now about those solar cells. Earlier today I watched the KZitem series on the latest Solar Challenge in Australia. Those latest solar cars were so much smaller than I remember them being back when Aptera was still a going project. It did not surprise me to learn that the winning teams were all using Gallium Arsenide Spacecraft grade solar cells. Those are nearly twice as efficient at converting sunlight to electricity, even here on earth. I do not imagine Aptera can afford them though, Perhaps they are counting on perovskite enhanced layered silicon cell being available by the time they are in production. I would not count of that being in the Aptera either, but those developments do promise cheaper high efficiency cells that could one day make a car as efficient as the Aptera able to meet those dream abilities head on.

When you think of a 3-wheeler electric vehicle, you tend to think of a city car, but maybe like an Izetta. The world's most energy-efficient high performance vehicle is still our "X-Tracer" (later marketed as Peraves MonoTracer MTE150) that actually ran circles around everybody else and also the very much hyped Aptera at the 2010 PROGRESSIVE Automotive XPrize, which we won by a country mile. We have also been the only winner that after the competition actually built a couple of fully homologated production units of the winning vehicle. Until we had to give up, among other reasons, after Homeland Security detained the first MonoTracer MTE150 that was sent to a US distributor. The mentioned Cd means nothing without the frontal surface A in m2, so only a combined "CdA" is representative. The Aptera, if true, has a CdA of about 0.25 while the MonoTracer has a CdA of 0.099. At least 2 x better. And we measured it twice in the VW Wolfsburg wind tunnel against their XL1... The Aptera's crazy width of 2.23m renders it "unsafe at any speed" (famous quote from Ralph Nader about the original VW beetle in the 60ies!) by me. It still hardly managed the emergency lane change manouvre. Efficient and safe enclosed 2-seaters have to be leaning narrow tandem seating two or three-wheelers. 4-wheelers of this type will not comply with US-DOT so are off the table...

And with the ability to go 10 miles for less than 1 kw/h, that is an efficiency level that costs about a penny per mile in most states. A person driving 30,000 miles a year would expend roughly $230 in total consumed from the grid electricity. Less than $20/month. My drinks budget is definitely more than $20/month.

Yes, it has indeed the best aerodynamics. But Elon is right to dislike three-wheelers. They're fine in straight lines, but don't try cornering them on wet roads, and wet autumn leaves on the road surface are wildly dangerous. Any Morgan three-wheeler owner will tell you all about it. They are more dangerous than two-wheelers in those circumstances. But in sunny rainless treeless latitudes (where I live) they are heavenly, I'm sure. I'm going for a dual-hubmotor fat wheel scooter at a tenth of that price because I really don't need either the range or the top speed. But the Aptera is quite timelessly beautiful, and I hope you have a wonderful time with it. Cheers.

Any chance it comes to Europe? And is it eligible for incentives? Cause I want one and it would be on top of my cross shopping list (if the price stays, with Incentives)

I would love to design a form around this chassis. The designers are not exploiting the potential beauty well. The form is unbalanced, with disconnected subdominant and subordinate details. They should approach some design schools for ideas (pay them). Or, approach Hydra Design Labs to really make a truly classic form.

The form was determined by a wind tunnel with the sole goal of minimizing drag. They could have prioritized issues of visual balance, or connected the subdominant and subordinate details, but to the extent that it might cost them in aerodynamic efficiency they would be defeating themselves if they did.
@robertnicholls9917

@@robertkirchner7981 I'm aware of that. I'm saying even with the same general space and form restrictions for aerodynamic efficiency, you can still make it more visually appealing. It's not bad but you can tell the designers aren't good at subtle details that could make it look more resolved. Remember, the EV-1 was 0.19, not far off, dealing with a lot more space. It had a much more visually and aerodynamically resolved design. Volkswagen XL1 was 0.186, which I think is very beautiful. Both PRODUCTION cars had 4 wheels. As a 3 wheeler, Aptera has more leeway because less material will be contacting the air. That said; beauty is subjective. I think it's ok but JUST missing the mark visually. I think the Buick Wildcat was 0.15, if I'm remembering correctly from the Motortrend article over 30 years ago.

She didn't really mention the size of the battery packs. The options are super small! And yet the ranges are ridiculous due to the extreme efficiencies. I think Aptera's odds of succeeding are a lot better this time around than last time. Energy density and cost has declined significantly.

100Wh per km? That's a bit disappointing, considering that the Renault Zoe gets 160 and the VW id.4 gets 180. Both of which seat more than two people and have a decent amount of storage space. That said, this seems to be on the low price end of the market, and a cheap option is always appreciated.

No, 100 watt hours per mile, or 1.62 km at EPA highway speeds. It also has 25 cu. ft. of storage space - or about 709 liters.

It would be best to choose a 3 wheel motor version for maximum control. There will be full cold weather testing of an Aptera on the Elaphe cold weather test track next winter.
