Great thorough review, G. This is going to be a great light for so many people who can't afford HMIs. I would say, that if you plan on further exploring this light, to test it against an Arri M18. or Arri M8. If you go to Arri's photometrics, you will see that with a 16º spot, the M18 does same LUX at 6m as the 600d does at 3 with the fresnel spotted. The M8 accomplishes the same output as the 600d with a matching 15º spot at 4m. Still a little bit ahead. However, here is the big difference. When it comes to using big sources for shaped light (not diffused), the HMIs being a single source have a very different fall off than COB LED. The inverse square law weirdly does not apply to COB LED (you can google the arguments for this). The readers digest version is basically high powered COBs are AMAZING for diffused light sources, but simply can't compete to the quality of light that HMIs produce. So saying it's as bright as the sun is a bit of a misnomer. To actually emulate the parallel beams of the sun, we minimally need an M9 (9K), but most often need an 18K. Beam size is a huge factor in light quality beyond just light output. I say this as a working gaffer who's used every light on the planet several times over - the physics of it never seem to change. That all said, I'm a huge fan of COB lights (owning a couple myself), and they are revolutionizing the business. The one big advantage is heat. You cant stand a meter or two in front of an M8 or M18 (800w & 1800w respectively) for very long without melting your clothing (seen it happen on a few occasions!). The fact that people can work around a 600d without burn danger is a very good reason to buy COB lights. Not to mention that when boxed with diffusion, it easily replaces the much more expensive K5600 Joker 800 HMI. All this to say that I'm not writing this to chime in with my 2 cents to stroke my ego - but more to ask you to do a video comparing COB to HMI (if you can get your hands on some). I think you would make the best video out there and open up the technical differences to users. As always, bravo for an informative and entertaining video. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

In terms of real world gaffer usage check out Andrew lock on his channel Gaffer and Gear. I'm sure he'll soon have the 600d to do a review and he'll definitely compare it to some HMI's as well as the forza 500 he uses regularly
@dalesood

@@mikkelwarrer4531 In fact, Luke Seerveld did just that test - against a Joker 800, and I gotta say - the Aputure 600 performs impressively well in terms of throw, & fall off. Much better than I had anticipated. Shadows aren't as sharp as the Joker, but only by a bit. This light is gonna be everywhere now.

Whenever I see light's this powerful, I'm reminded of a director that I read about in a book back in the 1970's , who said, "I prefer lights that require me to diffuse them with 3/4-inch plywood." Then he went on to talk about the zillion ways that a powerful light could be modified. Now we're talking possiblities! Minus not needing a licensed electrician to run it.

Thank god for Apiture!! I needed two lights to use for natural lighting through windows for narrative film making. My only options looked like the Arri 2500, which costs a whopping $5,000 per light!! Can’t really afford to pay $10,000 for two lights. But It honestly looks like the 600D is good enough to do the job, at less than half the price of 1 2500 Arri HMI light. Thanks for the detailed review!! Looks like I’m getting two 600D’s!!!

Hi Gerald, great vid! I may put in a RTO one of these up for a specific use case - my college is experimenting with 360 content - we have a 'blue room ' built that's entirely covered in blue fabric so we can key out the background of a 360 livestream video. The issue of course is getting even lighting in that rectangular room without the key-destroying shadows. I'm hoping a light like this with that modifier would be able to mount directly above the 360pro (where the black void circle is when streaming) to somewhat hide the light and provide enough light to fill the room without having other ugly led panels etc. in the frame. What do you think?

It's an interesting light for sure. With the added dmx features and weather proofing Aputure is finally starting to offer the quality that I would use on a professional film set. The price is actually what's most appealing about it, because when comparing it to industry units like a joker 800; it's only about a stop or so less bright than when using a leko adaptor, but it still almost for stops less bright when you start introducing lenses into the mix. The Joker however is almost 8000 dollars. Or With Arri orbiter, they have very similar levels of output when using the same types of modifiers, The Orbiter is RGB however and has more added features for effects, dmx ect, but that unit as a kit is easily 10,000 dollars. For these reasons I think Aputure is starting to add value to the professional space.

Hey Gerald! I have been delving deep into the world that is codecs and the more I learn, the less I know. It seems in 2020 that most cameras should support internal raw capture but it seems like Sony and Panasonic can't do this because of legal disputes with RED? Could you make a video comparing the various RAW codecs and hopefully explain why Sony hasn't released their own RAW codec? the Prores RAW from my new a7siii is truly amazing compared to my old a7iii, but I really really wish I could record internally for run and gun shooting in the backcountry.
