‘Aqal’ meaning nomadic hut, is a homecoming for Somali-Australians according to co-curator Najma Sambul.
The brief was left wide open for artists, who were simply asked what makes them feel Somali, what speaks to their culture or ‘dhaqan’.
The exhibition included the titular ‘Aqal’ by traditional weaver Muhubo Suleiman, ‘Loss’ a collection of ceramic works by contemporary artist Idil Abdullahi, and a Somali female dance ensemble.
A collaboration with Melbourne company Snuff Puppets resulted in an engaging performance by children from the Somali community.
