lol that little girl telling her dad don't do that, getting all serious "You're gonna drop your phone!" adorable XD I was wondering what is being grown in the grow bed part of the setup and whether or not the fact that crabs live in saltwater affects what kind of plants you can actually grow. I would absolutely love to setup an aquaponics ecosystem that contains crabs! Such a great idea!!!

That's a pretty cool experiment. I love how kids are so receptive to nifty experiments, like the one you're trying out with your crabs. My only suggestion is oxygenating the water just like you would with an aquarium. I'm not an expert tho, haha. Good Luck!!!

maybe throwing in some duckweed + some guppies and goldfish would provide a nice foodcycle , also something to add oxygen to the water, bubblers or a water pump,. id also add some rocks and sand pvc pipes maybe for the crabs to hide and stuff, also some lily pads might be nice. and a mesh covering on top to keep out debris like leaves to prevent too much anaerobic bacteria/ overloading ur system.

Man your missing the point. It would be harder and more expensive to grow macro algae (saltwater plants) than it would be to grow the crabs alone. He's trying to grow crabs to eat not make a saltwater aquarium.

+bob bobson it wouldn't cost very much and can't do anything but help the krabs

You would need to add substrate (aragonite sand, rubble, or rocks) to grow the macro algae on. That substrate would make cleaning the tanks and harvesting the crabs harder, and more time consuming. So, adding "plants" to the tank would in fact cost you money, time, and labor. All that for something your going to toss live into a pot of boiling water, and crush with a hammer later.

Good point. I put this particular pool directly underneath an oak tree. The tree will start raining acorns for months. Location, location, location. Thanks for posting. But, on the hand it helps keep the water temperature down if it is shaded. I've concluded that a system like this works better underneath a covered environment. Great observation, thanks for posting.

Not really. I put the pond benefit shade trees, so the water wouldn't overheat and for limited space. However, I didn't not think about all of the acorns and leaves that would fall into this short term project. It would be better to have an even more controlled environment, perhaps inside.

I think that you need to provide shelter for your crabs. Visualize the crabs in their natural enviroment. A habitat must provide a crab with rocks and plants in which to hide. Habitats should also provide plenty of food sources, like worms, algae, smaller crustaceans and fish, and the consistent presence of water. Take care of sharp rocks as not to puncture your pool, and try to circulate the water ever so often:) ( I go to the grocery store and buy live clams, for my saltwater fish.) Good day.

This is cool. But the reason this did not work, there is special salt for aquariums and marine life (you cant use table salt) then you have to mix up the salt and let it mix in. Then you can test the salinity to see if i is livable for the crabs. You can tell that the water is not salty because tadpoles live in fresh water and they would have died in that pool if it were salty.

thats a great question. There is an asian market that has live tanks filled with Dungeness crab, so in theory if you are able to create the habitat it might work. That's really thinking outside of the box. It would be wild it the problem of cannibalism would be resolved by varying the crab species. If this were to work, while the startup cost are most expensive, the harvest could potentially be more lucrative. Wow... thanks for asking such a great question...

Dude good idea, But your gonna need a skimmer (Cheap mesh) for the leaves. And invest in 3 whisper water filters (About 15.00 ea), A whisper water pump for circulation and a couple Stone bubblers. Just like a regular fish tank. Also blue crabs live in BRACKISH water. You probably need to do some research and planning on crabs. In fresh water they'll NEVER breed.
