For your outside convert the tanks into Aquaponics and have some great dirt free gardens going. The garden plants will work the same as your in tank plants to go towards your ''natural' theme. The gold fish and koi are awesome for supplying the 'fertilizer' we are just getting it started ourselves but put some strawberries in the top of our 30gal indoors and have been tracking the growth and it's insane.

The shelf in that wooden cabinet helps keep the torsion from tweaking with the weight on the top, so if you remove that, you may need to redo some other method to increase the structural integrity. It would be awesome to have a yard like that to build cool stuff in. :)

You should be able to leave the rice fish out year-round. In Japan they'll happily survive under a layer of ice and (depending on who you listen to) having the temperature change with the seasons actually extends their life-span compared to a rice fish that lives its life in a constant temperature.

@AquariumCoop
7 жыл бұрын
I don't plan on doing walstad setups as I'm not a fan of the soil. I may do one for a comparison sake. The ibc totes will be outside year round. The goal would be to insulate them well and build tops to keep heat in etc.
@nicko8819

You could put your icb totes a foot or two into the ground; that would make keeping things out there year round quite a bit easier.

For natural aquariums add some water hyacinths and scuds, not water lettuce. The roots are different. Scuds love water hyacinth roots. So if you do that the fish can't get to the ones in the roots, its a food source, and they feel comfortable breeding in there. It's a good addition to an ecosystem. I would let some mulm build up, tons of things would live in there and benefit the fish. The more organisms that can coexist the better. Gambusia fish. I'm pretty sure they would last all year for you. I live in California but my pond iced over and they were still there doing fine. So far as i know they would survive over winter. I'm trying dojo loaches for a pond. They would probably do fine overwinter. You should definitely set up some ponds. I would love to see how those rice fish do.
@AquariumCoop
7 жыл бұрын
Yeah outside hyacinth would do ok, but I find it hard to keep em doing well inside. As for gambusia they are illegal in washington :(

Hi Cory, thanks for giving us a look at your fish room. Loving all of the guppies and corydoras. I wanted to ask if you can consider adding the names of the plants you mention on the screen along with the fish species? Cory, don't get quotes for large acrylics and glass. I'm guessing u have a cement floor right? Then just get quotes for large plywood or even cement/brick tanks with a large viewing window at the front. A fraction of the cost for sure! Negative side is that it's a commitment, u won't just break them down when ur tired of them.....
@AquariumCoop
7 жыл бұрын
Also you can't see them from every side. Which I want to be able to view them from every side.
@borgaren
7 жыл бұрын
I get that, but u can make huge tanks and u can get into them with snorkle gear and look from underneath as well ;D
@borgaren
7 жыл бұрын
Anyways, a trade off for sure, but the cost benefits....... Why not a plywood bottom and back, or better yet brick it and fibre glass it, side and front glass or acrylic, quite shallow to keep the glass thickness down, but deep and looooong. Low cost compared for sure. That's what I would do anyways (and have done in the past in a somewhat smaller scale). U can build a wall to the wall tank for a couple of grands, and some sweat ;D Go all natural with thick gravel or dirted, and a carpet of dwarf sag at the bottom.

Hey cory, could you possibly experiment with a lower layer of crushed lava rock ( not to the point of sand but not big enough to create a raised substrate) then a layer of dirt or high nutrient subtrate and then a layer of fine sand? I wonder what the differences will be compared to the one you have set up. We both know that lava rock great for beneficial (i,e aerobic bacteria) , i wonder if it will make a difference for anaerobic bacteria and or facultative bacteria. Of course, i will be experimenting also, just not yet since i need more space. Hope you do achieve lowering your water changes and creating the perfect environement.🤔

"Going natural" reminds me of what I used to read in old aquarium manuals (Axelrod and before), wherein they'd talk about 19th century tanks. These would have to have a very low bioload to succeed. If you "go natural," do you think you'll have to keep fewer fish in your fish room?

I've had that U2 filter, swear it was the only filter that killed duckweed. I had the version that let you chose either top, bottom or equal pressure through the outflow parts, not sure if they still make it like that as I had mine a few years back.

I used that filter paired with a sponge filter in a 20 gallon tank, never could keep duckweed alive (or any floating plant). Not sure if it was surface agitation or the swirling currents or what...but that filter+duckweed= dead duckweed
