This video was extremely helpful. Now I am curious. What about this situation. You have a high GH of say 13-15 and a low KH of around 2-3, with a PH of about 6.5-7. I am worried a situation like the one I am describing is not ideal. I am in the process of trying to balance this out by cutting my Tap water with RODI. I would love your input because I am worried this is causing some issues for me. Thanks for your time!

Plants that prefer hard/soft? I never thought like that.. It is just stated something like this, this plant can manage or tolerate harder water than that other plant. So I thought it is better to be in a little bit below 7 in pH that is more or less ideal for most (?) Of the plants. And someone state that many of the plant processes will slow down and the plant will not grow properly at pH at 8.. Or am I missinformed?

Dan, there are lots of chemical additives at your local pet store that will reduce water hardness and pH. If you would like to do it more naturally, you can collect and add part rain water or distilled water to your tank when doing water changes. This should reduce the hardness but may not affect pH.

Recently I started checking gh and kh in my aquarium. I have 0 gh and high ph and kh due to a water softener. I bought a chemical to raise the gh called hw- Remineral by Wiegandt which was recommended by my lfs. My problem is this, what level am I trying to reach from 0 GH? Also, is this a good way to increase the GH or will this throw off the KH, I am so lost in this pat of the hobby and I have been doing this a long time. Never had any problems with my fish, just always looking to make their lives better. I am also in the process of converting my 150 g Oscar tank to a planted rainbow fish, barb, rainbow shark tank. I have read plants depend greatly on this gh etc.

I know this video is old but could anyone tell me what exactly will happen to the fish if the water is too hard or too soft? All I keep finding is info stating that some fish do well in either one but I can’t seem to find an explanation as to what will actually happen to them if the hardness is not ideal. Of course sickness or even death but I’m looking for symptoms. And yes a test kit is necessary but again, all I want to know right now is that are the possible symptoms a fish will experience if the water is too hard or too soft, respectively.

My PH is around 6.0/6.2 but my water is showing hard on API test kit and Nutrafin test kit around 12 to 14 drops to change color (approximately 250 to 300 ppm). My fish likes soft water below 80 would be ideal. I checked my PH it was at 6.0, I wanted around 6.4 to 6.6 so before checking the hardness I dropped some Seachem powder to raise the PH, and a few days later checked the hardness and it was high, I did a 50% water change and after a dead fish my water is still hard PH is still very low. I wanna keep my PH above 6.0 because below 6.0 its really undetectable with my test kits so I wanna keep a minimum of 6.4 to a stable 6.6. If I make any sense please advice.

Good morning from Ohio! We are setting up our 55 gal. with a Cascade 700. I have a mesh sponge in the bottom tray with a bio filter above that. Then in the second tray is the activated carbon and Zeolite crystals. We used our well water which is high in Iron but otherwise "good water." 3 days ago I put in Anubias, Moneywort, Ludwigia and java fern. However, the hardness is off the charts, alkalinity is between zero and 80. Since there are no fish yet, the other values are in "safe" range. I don't know what to do now? We used Start Right and it has been filtering for 4 days. How do I get the low alka and the hardness corrected? Thanks for any suggestions, it's much appreciated.

The only way to reduce the GH level in your tank would be to replace with distilled water (RO). This can be a huge pain for the obvious reasons sooo, based on the fact your carbonates are fairly low, Im curious what you dGH is. How many drops to change color on the test kit? High GH is not always an issue, it can be good for several plants and live bearing fish. Let me Know!

DIY AQUAPROS The test strips I have gives in ppm but the conversion says about 23-30. I can get a different means of checking this if you think I should? Especially since we are using the well water. I know in the past I have lost fish because of this and I hate to go through that again. Checked our pool test kit, lol, but it just does pH, Chlorine and Bromine? I actually misspoke earlier, today is day 5. Just checked again after adding an air stone this am and the pH is down in the 6.4 range, the alkalinity is still in the 0-80 range (very pale green on the strip) and the total hardness is at 425+ How much of the water should we change out with RO or are you saying all 55 gal? We do have it for drinking, but I'm not sure how the hubs will feel about giving up his coffee water for the fish tank, lol. Thanks for any insight!

DIY AQUAPROS Ok...I just checked our RO water it's at 0 for NO2 & NO3; hardness is between 25-50ppm or (1.4 - 2.8 dGH); alkalinity is at 0 and pH is barely 6.4. I don't know, that water doesn't seem to test much better, except for the hardness, if I am reading it right??

Limestone based rock among other types will contain calcium carbonate which will work to raise the pH as well as GH of your tank. This is one method of "naturally" raising pH and overall water hardness.

Can you use peat to lower hardness - does it actually work? Also, what about API water pillows?
@GuitarLessonCharts
6 жыл бұрын
I'm just researching this all for myself too. Not sure if peat will lower hardness but it can buffer the ph and make it lower/more acidic. PH and water hardness aren't necessarily synonymous with each other. Also why would you want to lower the hardness of your water, just out of curiosity? I'd think that hard water at the ph needed would be optimal for most plant/fish health
@dancaraya
6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply! So I want softer water because my source water is extremely high, way higher than normal. 14 drops on the API test kit to be exact. Not good for most plants and a lot of fish, even though some fish seem to be doing okay in it. I eventually want to keep discus in it, so it definitely needs to be softer for them.
@GuitarLessonCharts
6 жыл бұрын
I'm no expert and I'm assuming your ph is on range and your water is too hard and that ideally you want to lower the hardness but keep the same ph? If that's the case I'd probably experiment with baggies of peat and or drift wood. Problem I see when researching is people are using ph and hardness interchangeably which isn't always the case, I'd also look into something in your aquarium being the contributing factor to the hardness, like rocks.
@dancaraya
6 жыл бұрын
Good tips. I just put in a pretty large piece of driftwood, so we'll see what happens with that. I'm thinking maybe peat in my canister filter would be a good step. As for the hardness, unfortunately it comes right out of the tap really hard, so I can't remove anything that would solve that problem. At this point I'm really heavily leaning towards biting the bullet and just getting an RO unit to kind of "start from scratch" per say, and build up the water to the ideal levels.
@GuitarLessonCharts
6 жыл бұрын
Another thing you could try is increasing the amount of plants, technically plants should appreciate the extra minerals in the water (most are micro nutrients for them) providing the ph is in range for them to utilize it, thus they could potentially reduce the hardness. I'd imagine this would be especially true for more complex plant forms. Maybe have a look at "aquaponics kh gh" or "hydroponics kh gh" you might find better answers there as opposed to the fish world.

what would be the most natural way to obtain a higher ph for keeping african cichlids thanks for the awesome video
@AQUAPROS
10 жыл бұрын
It would be difficult to adjust the pH naturally. As im sure you are aware, there are several trusted products which can adjust pH to your cichlids preferred range, 7.5-9. I would test the water coming out of your tap and determine the pH and water hardness, that way you can see how doing water changes may effect your tank. It is very difficult to intentionally alter the pH naturally because so many different biological processes affect pH as you surely saw in this video. It really depends on your setup, is it planted? do you have an efficient biological filter? do you supplement CO2? ect. One thing you could try is increasing your water surface agitation which would help to remove CO2 from the water column and thus raise the pH slightly.
@516Spark
10 жыл бұрын
i currently have a well established aquarium supported by 2 filters a 5 stage canister filter and a hob filter i pretty positive that both house an efficient amount of biological bacteria for my 125 gallon african cichlid setup i house know plants in the aquarium and my hob does create a decent amount of surface agitation. every time i do a water change since the water coming out of my tap has a ph of about 6.8 and my fish seem to desire a hire oh of 8 ish lol i have to add a home made buffer which consist of backing soda to epshom and aquarium salt. i seem to have gotten it down to a science and making sure the buffer is completely broken down weather i boil it or just stir it in with hot water in a 5 gallon bucket and while adding it slowly while filling up my tank and doing water changes. it just seems like a lot of extra work and iv heard of people eliminating this buffering process with crushed coral and substrates of that sort i guess what i meant by a more natural way i feel like by adding chemicals like i am its just not natural which in the long run could be harmful thanks for taking the time to read this
@AQUAPROS
10 жыл бұрын
516Spark This is a tough issue, If you feel comfortable removing one of your filters, for example the smaller HOB you could reduce the amount of acid produced by nitrification. However, if you have a high fish load this could be too risky of a move. The crushed coral idea was my next suggestion. This does require a huge amount of work especially since you have a large tank... If you have a lot of driftwood in your tank this may also be a source of a lower pH. African cichlid keeping can be laborious especially if your water change tap water is on the soft side. In your case, you may be stuck with having to buffer the water.
@516Spark

yea I'm always searching for the more enjoyable way to keep my fish happy lol i appreciate the feed back I'm just looking to eliminate adding the buffer if possible every water change i do it seems that my water gets really cloudy and I'm pretty positive this is veing caused by the backing soda but any how it is what it is i guess thanks
