Cool video! One rule mistake: you get a manta when card is slid up, not when you score it. Actually, both of you got the same handicap, thus it does not change much.

At 30:36, Shira flips manta in the middle of her main action in order to push up a card past a blank space and gain access to more money. I believe the push up actions on mantas and cards can only be done before and after a main action. The only things that can be done during it are adding strength and coins to the respective action you're doing. Therefore she wouldn't have had enough to recruit that character up top

My only gripe with this game is that I hate how the rule book is written. I feel like it explains everything in the most confusing order possible. Once you get through that slog though, the actual gameplay is very intuitive and lets you do a whole lot with what basically amounts to only 4 core mechanics.

Nice review Shira & Alex ! My main (slight) complaint about the base game was the limited number of characters in the deck, and all had 2 copies, so replayability was hampered by this. The expansion seems to me like a must have in that respect, plus the huge improvement the 8 Land cards on top provides. I was sceptical to say the least before my first play, especially given the fact that you can only play 1 card per turn and you don't draw anything until you use the specific card... But then it's so satisfying to chain combos from your locations and mantas, you actually can have big big turns with just 1 character!

Side note: for people, like me, who have the first print of the game there are small rule changes in between the original Cosmodrone version and Arcane Wonders one. The Matrona text for 2p is one of them, but the main one that drift me off a bit was the Scout action. In the original one, you can only do that action if there are 4 or less cards in the bottom row (you can still play the card, but not scout if that doesn't happen). I realize Arcane Wonders made these changes to speed up the game. I love Aquatica from my first game. It is so fast to play and I love the combos you do during the game. It satisfies me so much, and I want to try the expansion (as soon as I can find it in english in europe). Unfortunately, I haven't had the opportunity to play it with more people and the solo version from the box is just fine (basically you only play with combos trying to beat your own score). Fortunately, I found a solo play on BGG that is it an actual challenge with multiple difficulties. I wished I was able to play the game more with others, but at least I have that now. The sleeving factor is not a big issue for me (and I usually sleeve almost every game). The most important cards to sleeve are the ones on player hands. Yeah, it would be nice to sleeve the location cards, but if they had used standard card sizes we would have gone into one of two problems. They would have gone with either: a) mini euro/USA cards which would be too small for what they need to show; or b) tarot/7 wonders/euro sized cards which would have made the player boards unnecessarily bigger. Sorry for the long comment, just to say that I love this game! Thanks for showing the expansion.

Thanks for your video! I think it popped up because yesterday I watched a top ten list and someone had Aquatica ranked as their second favourite game of all time, so I had to check out some more Aquatica reviews. Now I'm definitely intrigued by this game. Question, however: why do you think this game scores relatively low on BGG? Even on a geeklist that ranks all the new games of the year by their scores on a compilation of top ten lists Aquatica was in the lower half. Any idea why people are not loving it more?

Biggest nitpick that I have is that the location cards have so much iconography on them that I find myself double taking each time I flip over something from the location deck. This is paired with it not being easily distinguishable on the back of the card to tell if the card is oriented correctly. Overall, great game though!

Where are you on this a year later? Wife and I bounced off of the base game pretty hard. None of the mechanics seemed very new, although the way they used the locations was different. Games like Elysium had the "get this power til you score it" mechanic as have a few other games that in my opinion are far superior. The strategy seemed pretty straight forward as well. I just don't see many plays before you see everything the game has to offer. Also, the art on the characters we found pretty bad and inconsistent to the locations. Although they're different games I wished I was playing Abyss the whole time.

Even checking the Sleeving post on BGG, I can't believe they'd make a card size that is so non-standard. I hate that. boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/164572/item/7317434#item7317434 I think if a company is going to release such a silly card size, they should make sleeves available for them.
@m-sousa
3 жыл бұрын
I think that is a lot to ask for a company, making sleeves for their game just because it is not standard. I have a lot of doubts it would be profitable, specially for a small publisher (I don't know the size of Arcane Wonders, but Cosmodrone is pretty small). Coming from someone who does sleeve everything, I don't care/mind I can't sleeve the location cards. Plus, if they were standard, they would be bigger which would make the player boards bigger themselves (unnecessarily in my point of view)
@ericmatteau9954
3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree. They could have chosen a more standard card size.
@ronthal
3 жыл бұрын
I don't think companies should adapt to the obsession of sleeve maniacs when the material is actually way more convenient in that format. There is a reason why they are slimmer; if those location cards were standard size, taking into account the extra mm left and right for sleeves (so that you can slot them in the player board), said board would have to be like 6-7cm wider which would be just massive for no reason. Small 44mmx68mm would not be convenient at all to slide in either, too small to fit 4 levels of actions, and would not allow for the beautiful artwork on those. Those cards are shuffled once per game, they are never in your hand, and the player board slots don't damage them. I do sleeve cards in games where you handle and shuffle them all the time (CGGs, Clank, Terraforming Mars etc...) but I find refreshing that designers try something different, like 7th Continent and the square cards when it came out.
@m-sousa
3 жыл бұрын
@@ronthal I agree with you, and I was trying to point that out in my comment. Making the cards standard size would have only made the boards bigger. And then, by consequence, the box for sure. I don't want to point the finger to ScytheNoire (I hope you don't take it personal, please) because this is the kind of complain I have seen from more people and for more cases besides Aquatica. And when that happen I can just think like "how spoiled/privileged we board gamers must be to complain about these kind of stuff?"
@ClockworkWyrm
3 жыл бұрын
@@m-sousa "how spoiled/privileged we board gamers must be to complain about these kind of stuff?" It really boils down to how well the cards are made or if they are going to be handled/shuffled frequently. It's funny just HOW different cards can be. I would never sleeve the cards in Gubs, which is like 10$ but has thicker linen cards, but I 100% would sleeve the thin papery cards used in Shards of Infinity, a 20$ game. The cards from the former, cheaper game are higher quality and will endure over time despite regular handling whereas the later game I saw small nicks in the cards after my first play without sleeves. Personally I have a hard time paying $60+ for a game knowing that the cards are cheap and will wear considerably after 2-3 years of regular play AND that the creator has opted for a component size that makes finding protectors difficult. Hence the desire to either provide custom sleeves or use more standard card sizes. As a youth I played games my parents had when they were younger. It was a great extra connection to the board games that they were effectively heirlooms and I would love to do the same with my board game collection someday. I don't consider wanting to protect that investment privileged. Though in a world of "planned obsolescence" I'm probably in the minority.

At 20:18 when you play the grabber, wouldn't you only need one extra strength because you have the royal penguins at the top? (Or 3, not sure if the royal penguins count toward each conquest separate or not.) Either way, you could have saved yourself a manta flip and a push up if you'd wanted to save it
