It should come on when you're not shooting or the rifle leaves your workspace. Like for example you're maneuvering under cover or concealment and the rifle is gonna be pointing at your feet at times, or other object or people if there is no other option. Another example is if you need to do something quickly with your hands (such as throw a 'loud rock', or other noisy device ;) ). But yeah if you're gun up, changing magazines, or have a sight picture, the safety should be off.

@@jariv9666 just because you don't understand how firearms work doesn't make everyone else "wrong" If you're doing an emergency reload, there's no bullets in the gun, so it literally can't go off, no point to dicking with your safety there. If you're clearing a malfunction, you've already identified that the rifle cannot, or will not fire, thus again making actuating the safety pointless. If you're swapping to a handgun during either of these two situations, again the rifle is either empty or cannot / will not fire so there is no point to flipping an already rendered safe weapon TO safe. The only time the safety should be engaged is when the Rifle has a round in the chamber, and is thus in a condition where it is actually capable of firing, and you need to perform an action that requires you sling, or otherwise lose positive control of the weapon. This could include, but is not limited to, taking off your backpack to retrieve an item within, getting out a map and compass, using a rangefinder, packing magazines (for some reason), transporting equipment that requires both hands such as setting up an anti tank launcher on a pod, or other crew-served weapon, transporting ammunition (usually in the form of cans) to a crew served weapon etc.

If the gun is not shooting, regardless of a malf or a bolt lock, the safety being manipulated is superflous. If you're at a point where youre practicing emergency reloads with kit on, you should probably not be erroneously putting your finger in the trigger willy nilly. (Not that even that would be that big of an issue, you use the trigger finger to release the magazine anyway and so it wont even be near the trigger for most of the drill anyways) And on a number of other rifles, especially the AK (which makes a reload impossible), or the M1A/14 (which makes a reload dangerous), flipping the safety on is just not an option.

You shouldn’t check the chamber, let the gun talk to you, anyone with sufficient training and experience knows exactly how every malfunction feels and sounds. It’s a bad habit especially at night since you won’t be able to see anything
