Now to get cracking on the Dome section. Also the Bryderwens before that craps out completely.

If you look carefully there are places where the median barrier doesn’t join up but has overlapping sections to allow emergency services to turn around.

Duncan, the outside is for slow vehicles like trucks because it's a long dragging hill. I have 1300cc cruising motorcycle, it looks fantastic.

Looks a great improvement for those of us living in the North. One point: some of it is two lanes per carriageway and some 3. There are also sections with what looks like a lane for disabled vehicles. Why not have three lanes all the way?
@ptolemym-w5410
Жыл бұрын
2 lanes are all that are needed most of the time, the 3 lane sections are crawler lanes for trucks going up the steep parts/getting back up to speed. The safety areas could be switched to a third lane, but the UK has shown how bad an idea that is (multiple deaths directly attributed to removal of the hard shoulder). Costs a lot more to build a third lane with the appropriate safety features, and without the safety features, it will be shut far more often by the Serious Crash Unit - negating the small benefit the extra lane provides. It is always going to be limited by the motorway towards Auckland being only 2 lanes (and no realistic plans to change it given the Northern Gateway tunnels etc.) The bottleneck will always be the tunnels or the end of the motorway, rather than NX2. TLDR: Not needed, too expensive or unsafe to move to 3 lanes. Not the bottleneck.

Certainly won't miss our two demented spots , the passing lanes up windy ridge heading north coming up to Schollum Access Road ( AKA Lunatic Alley) .... and our all-time personal favourite heading south "Moron Hill" (AKA Pohuehue Viaduct) ......

Amazed no offramp for Warkworth industrial area ,Woodcocks road.Only needed one lane bridge made to two lanes! Also leads best to Warkworth town centre.!! Also no off ramps until Puhoi, this will be a nightmare when an accident happens and the Police close the road.Not able to get off. Both serious issues

Crikey!! This is a 300kph piece of road! 🏎 Now all we need is Chippy to get the money back that Cindy took for the Warkworth to Whangarei road and we will all be happy 😃

Yes please! Though that'll now be for Luxon to decide. Hopefully in the future there'll be a nice 4 lane highway that connects Whangarei to Auckland!

There will be burn outs after its opened to rip up the new seal.Thats what those boy racers do.Abuse all the hard work,then it will need to shut again for repairs.This is what happened to new tar seal in parts of Ak,made a mess of new sealed roads.But traveling up north should be a breeze once its all opened.

It's basically an extension of the northern gateway toll road. As there are no southbound exits until Orewa you will be paying the toll.

So how do emergency or roadside vehicles attend to incidents in this piece of highway if there are no turn around or off points anywhere on it? Have to go all the way to Orewa and come back the other way? And vice versa, has anyone actually thought about this at all? Stupidity in my books ..

As mentioned by @MrGregbu in another reply to video, there are overlapping splits in the center barrier rope. You can see them at 1:49 , 2:23 , 4:08 and 5:49 in the video, these allow emergency vehicles to turn around. There are other overlaps that break the center barrier rope into smaller section for easier repair and maintenance, and also overlaps on the outside of the road that allow vehicles to pull off to the side and back up behind the rope, these are mainly designed for maintenance vehicles, but can also be used as safe pull offs for police patrol cars, and the odd family with a child with a sudden bathroom emergency.

Enormous waste of money. Over 1 billion for this and we will be paying close to that again over the next few decades due to the PPP financing scheme. This just enables sprawl and will create more congestion. Its not even future proofed with public transport or a shared path. Cool drone shots though.
