Mount my thumper Max to canopy headboard and have some 12v computer fans pushing heat off of the heads while running, ez cheap solution to thermal cut. My next experiment with it will be connecting higher gauge power as the cable it comes with is very average so looking at soldering on some 6awg to handle its 90ah power spikes.

strange that your thumper hit thermal overload, I’ve done 2 4wds (8 tyres) up from 20psi on several occasions and mine hasn’t even hit it yet. Luck of the draw I guess
@LockyourHubs4WDing
3 жыл бұрын
Could be, we didn't do anything out of the normal for the test. Both compressors were at "room" temp at the start of the test, the 35s were at 18psi on both tests and the tests were done back-to-back, so no temperature difference on the day.
@hotaxi701

I second this with the thumper we go from 16psi to 40 on 33s on the cruiser and never hit thermal cutout even in mid 30z its still not to hot to put back in the bag
@TheJanope13

Prematurely ruined an otherwise good set of muddies because of the thumper max. The POS compressor would cut out randomly or not even run at all at times, very temperamental. This caused me to repeatedly do tarmac runs on low pressures to the nearest servo. I suspect that’s the reason my tyres started overheating, tearing lugs and became impossible to balance. I went through 3 sets in the 1 year warranty period . Finally but the bullet on an arb twin and it’s worth every cent. Two friends also had the kings compressor. I aired up my set of 33s and my mates 32s” (whose kings wouldn’t start) before the other bloke aired up his 35s because of the thermal cutout or whatever it was. The last time it died outside of warranty I pulled it apart and the thing is so poorly built. The piston does not sit centred in the cylinder because the con rod just has a bolt that pinches onto the shaft but wasn’t aligned properly. This caused one side of the Teflon ring seals to be really tight up one side probably a contributing factor to the thing overheating. Pulling the motor apart and you see so much sand and metallic debris caught in the stator as it’s just not sealed. I can’t stress enough if you have the means to go for the arb, go with that. Even if it means taking a few weeks overtime. Or if must get one of these style, at least get the rebadged one with a 5 year warranty. The bitterness of poor quality sticks around long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

I run the thumper - not the max, and an air tank. I can keep pressuring the tyres when the thumper overheats :) Way cheaper than the ARB. Premium paid with this arrangement is the space for the tank.

This video is very misleading. So take off about 25 seconds for the ARB because you didn’t turn it on so say about 7.5 minutes or something. Whereas the thumper you didn’t factor in that you had to wait 5 minutes for the temps for reduce so you could restart it again, so that time should be added into the total. Just the fact that the thumper couldn’t even pump up 4 mid size tyres is an indication just how shit they are..

Good comparison. Personally, I find it alarming that the ARB didn't cut out when reaching that temperature. This could lead to premature wear of the unit, and depending where it's mounted could expose other components to undue heat. I have seen a lot of people modify the thumper by fitting small 12 volt fans in the heads. Example kzitem.info/news/bejne/maKpu6tskqyDZG0 I have used both compressors. Value for money wise, the thumper max is a 5th of the price of the arb twin compressor.
