hey i got a question what was your most favorite font and hated font in the book that you made
@Toschez
2 жыл бұрын
@@warpedmine9682 Thanks for the question! I like the Sky Fox one for the reason mentioned; looks really good and has a good story to tell (i.e. deserves a much better game). I would say the badly designed example is a trilogy of Stern games, one is shown in p.242 (Calypso). The pixelation is quite random, but they are more fascinating than the forgettable ones.

It always surprises me to see how unique a pixel font type can look when you'd think there isn't much space for wiggle room, especially when you have to convey a specific letter. This is the magic of pixel art! The interpretation section was really interesting too, I squinted my eyes on the pixel art font on the left and it looked identical to the one on the right, that's a really nice showcase for the decisions we're making and the impact of the overall silhouette as you mentioned. Thanks for sharing Brandon! This is a little gem of a book
@BJGpixel

Totally! It was interesting to see how many more options were accessible through the use of increased colour counts. Like if you're making a pixel typeface of one colour on a plain background, the options and decisions may be more clear to a certain extent - but adding in an extra colour or two for anti-aliasing opens up so many possibilities for subtle curvatures etc. :D

this book looks really cool. Does it only focus on arcade typography in English, though? It would be really interesting to see how Japanese and other languages dealt with similar limitations with different writing systems and more subtle spacing requirements
@ahuman7543

there is one section about one game that has Russian text but besides that, no other languages are in the book as the author said if he had too open of scope it would take the author ages to complete the book.

For the italicized letters I showed at 3:00, the page spread after shares some of the Japanese characters in that same style - but generally the book is quite exclusively the English alphabet. I agree though, that'd be interesting to see how other letterforms are treated in that same 8x8 space! :D
@@ahuman7543 from everything I've seen, early arcade games tended to be exclusively english, even in japan, bc japanese font would take up too much space. Instead, they tended to use simple english, as people in japan tend to have at least some knowledge of english If im off the mark here lmk

Very insightful! I've actually been watching videos about historical woodworking benches lately - there's so much to learn from reading and I definitely feel inspired to do more of that! ✨ If I didn't know any better, I would've thought the YT algorithm picked up on my recent trends and served up this video 😆 Pixel art has always been so fascinating to me partly cuz of how every artist can come to this low-rez canvas and still bring their own unique presentation of pixels. I feel like this is especially true here, where the characters exist on "mere" 8x8 grids, yet there are a hundred unique examples in this book alone! 😱
@BJGpixel

Hahaha nice! 😆 I know next to nothing about woodworking, but I can imagine that having some visual textbooks would be an interesting format for that also! And yeah totally, after seeing the number of diverse examples at such a small canvas; it makes you think that by the time you get to a sizing of 16x16, there's probably almost as much freedom as designing something by hand/vector anyway. Especially because those fonts may be displayed on a computer screen around that size also 😅

2:30 This is really neat to me cause it actually reminds me of the comparisons Apple would use at their keynotes when they first presented the "Retina Display" on the iPhone 4. It's almost like the "soft interpretation" is what the Atari font would look like made natively for Retina/4K displays, as if we jumped straight from 1981 to 2012.

@2:20 is a great visual. Thanks for showcasing this book. I do have to say, that I actually found the italic letters in your recent videos quite hard to read. due to the limited resolution and high contrast, the letters became quite clustered and hard to read. It's a different story on CRT, as seen in your videos aswell. I found that the slight bluring helps the readability a lot, but on digital display I'd recommend either incresing the kerning (hard one because of low resolution) or anti aliasing (also tricky). I personally would go for non-italic in the first place, tho.

That's very cool. I had been thinking lately that there shouldn't be many different fonts in 8x8 tiles due to the small amount of pixels available (7x7 usually), but yeah, it looks like I was very wrong! Although I was thinking about 1-bit fonts, not those with 3+ colors.

I wish English alphabet used at least one letter with an accent... ;) These fonts are very interesting, but in many other languages they don't provide an example how to deal with extended alphabet - I wish more attention was given to that, as not only Slavic languages need accents and tails (ą, ę, ó, ń, ź...) but even very popular French or Spanish... Anyway, nice video, Brandon, thanks for this recommendation. If this book get available at a fair price in my region, I'll be very interested to check it out :)

I make that point clear in the book that typeface is the correct term, but stick to font mostly for space efficiency (I needed to write a whole bunch of short text).
