Wow this Steamkey game is right up my alley! It’s THE TEXTORCIST published by Headup, which combines shmup bullet-avoidance gameplay with a typing game, and a cool alternate-reality priest/exorcist hero. Will play this often haha. Already tried it a bit, and sometimes you’re typing with two hands, but sometimes typing with one hand while running away from bullets. Aaaargh! Thanks for providing me with this pleasant frustration, Gary!

Some awesome action games in the arcade in ’98, especially fighters and shmups! Arguably the best year ever for fighting games (and of course most of them came to home consoles as well) -- both classic games in the popular series and really fun offbeat fighters. The number of shmups a bit smaller than early 90s, but some of them are super-good (also many had home conversions). Racing games, as I’ve been predicting, are a bit less exciting now, since home console games (with all their seasons & cars to collect) were taking over the genre -- my all-time favorite Ridge Racer Type 4 was released Dec 98 in Japan for PS1. Some fun games here, though -- I notice RADIKAL BIKERS from Gaelco, which looks like a fun Crazy Taxi-ish game on a scooter; and HYPERDRIVE from Midway, looks like a game built on the bones of Hydro Thunder, but racing in a star fighter. I did some quick research, and there were home conversions planned for all the consoles, which for some reason got cancelled. Maybe Hyperdrive (arcade) didn’t get the critical acclaim that Hydro Thunder had … Other standouts to me: - CHAOS HEAT - overhead shooter-brawler from Taito, never got a home conversion (strangely), though I see that JP & EU got a sequel of sorts: Chaos Break for PS1 in 2000. - BASS ANGLER games from Konami - we are right around the Golden Age for *fun* in fishing games, like the Dreamcast Sega Bass Fishing games that would come out soon after. - SPIKEOUT - cool-looking 3D beatemup from SEGA, evidently developed by Nagoshi - MAGICAL TRUCK ADVENTURE - cool looking SEGA game on rails, maybe for the Naomi board? - STAR WARS TRILOGY ARCADE - a truly great arcade game from SEGA, and a reminder of the time decades earlier when the best action games were *only* in the arcade. Fun video, Gary! I bet that 1999 won’t top 1998 for great action games…

Definitely, after a very disappointing 1997, it appears that 1998 had a strong rebound! Indeed some great titles! Radikal Bikers also stood out to me - it actually looked (and played like) a long lost N64 game, what with its bright vivid colours and its cartoony aesthetic; it was a blast to play as well. After being somewhat quiet for a few years, Sega returned in force. Some terrific Model 3 entries like "House of the Dead 2", "Dynamite Cop", "Daytona 2", "Fighting Vipers 2" - and of course a personal favorite - "Star Wars Trilogy Arcade". Of course, with a few notable exceptions (like Star Wars Trilogy Arcade), the majority of these games were showing up on home consoles - often in improved form ...which probably didn't do much for the overall health of arcades. Fun fact: Spikeout actually received a sequel on the original Xbox in 2005! I came across it when I did the XBox video a few years back - and only now did I realize it was based on an arcade title!

Those are some good compilations bro. I’m 43 and grew up playing every system from Atari to the 8 bit NES to PS5 and Xbox now. But arcade games always were amazing cuz back then home game systems couldn’t compare to those graphics and gameplay most of the time.

Good stuff. I own 1, knew of 8 being arcades and would play 23. Nice work putting another up. If I ever find an arcade I'll know what to look for. Thanks.

I didn't realize a lot of games I like all came out in 98. Plus there were a few lightgun games here I've never heard of.

I want to find an arcade game. After clearing a stage, an eagle puzzle is obtained. If all stages are cleared, a full picture of an eagle will be obtained. Does anyone know?
