I'm from Germany and was born in 1973, and this was one of my favorite arcade games. 3 weeks ago I visited California and stopped in Santa Barbara. I walked along the beach and saw a building with "ARCADE" at the entrance. I walked in and there were a lot of game machines. I walked through the hall and in the back I couldn't trust my eyes: There were machines from the 80s with all these games from that time. And there was 1942, too. I immediately inserted a coin and started playing, and it was so wonderful. I had tears in my eyes and was so overwhelmed. That was one of my best experiences during my trip... How could these machines survive 40 years??? Amazing ...!

Capcom executive office, 1984. "Alright we're just about ready to release our new arcade game, is there anything else we need to add to it?" "Umm, sir we haven't put in a soundtrack yet." "Ah dammit I knew we forgot something. Just throw in a bunch of random beeping noises. That's what the kids are into these days."
@TheStapleGunKid

Jandoor Thumpinbrushwheel Arcade games in 1984 did indeed have music most of the time. 1942 was a good game but it really needed more than random bleeps that eve r2d2 would get tired of.
@TheStapleGunKid
4 жыл бұрын
Plenty of arcade games had a soundtrack back then. Have you never played Kung Fu? Or Elevator Action? Heck even Donkey Kong had music, and that was released in 1981. Music wasn't some unheard of futuristic concept. Anyway whether or not the bleeping was structured it was damn sure annoying. The game would have been better off with nothing at all
@TheStapleGunKid
4 жыл бұрын
well we'll just have to disagree on this. Whatever structure the beeps have in this game, they cannot in any conceivable way, be considered music. While music in 1984 arcades was primitive by today's standards, it certainly existed and was totally normal. Wanting the levels in this game to have decent music, or at least some music at all, really wasn't asking a lot.
@TheStapleGunKid
4 жыл бұрын
@ It was primitive, but certainly not new. By 1984, music in arcade games was totally the norm. In Kung Fu (that's what I'll always know the game as), I hear music. It's not brilliant or anything, but it's certainly music, not just a series of beeps.

No video gamer really cared that the historical Lightning P-38E to P-38J twin-engine, fighter plane fired all of its armament of four, M2 Browning 0.50 caliber heavy machine guns and one, Hispano 20mm cannon from its nose cone. In the 1942 video arcade game, the P-38 fires from its wings, a historical inaccuracy. But the P-38 did exist in 1942. So did the Mustang, but as the earlier, Allison-engine Apache, limited to medium altitude.
