I've been playing this game a bit at Galloping Ghost Arcade lately and while it is a horizontal shmup it plays somewhat differently than what I'm comfortable with.
The game uses a charged attack system that rewards high risk with high damage output. Ayin (the character I used) has the 2nd strongest charged attack of the cast. Katana's is stronger, but takes more than twice as long to charge. Using his charged attack also means you have to be fairly close to your intended target, so you have to play aggressively in many areas of the game - which is something I'm not used to; I'd rather be defensive, stay back and give myself more time to dodge incoming bullets.
Another game mechanic that took some getting used to is the infamous Psikyo bullet speed of the enemies shots. They are much faster travelling than most other shmups, and it took some time making adjustments to where I kept my eyes focused on the screen.
The 2nd loop is as hard as anything I've ever seen - almost every enemy releases 2-4 "suicide" bullets when killed. I've watched a few replays of players that have 2-ALL'd this game, and they deserve much respect for the skill and time that it takes to master this game at that level.
Personally, I'm happy to clear just the first loop (just barely!) in this run, but I made it harder than I needed to on myself by not bombing before I lost a life on the final boss.
