Hey I'm attempting to do this but I've hit a snag. The joysticks that are with the cabinet are two 4 pin cables. And the USB encoder doesn't support a 4 pin plug. Can I cut these wires and make it four 2 pin cables? Or would that not work? Also my usb encoder has 2 pin spots colored Red. Is that relevant? Why are they red and the other ports all white? Thank you!

Eta, every video you have done has been hyper informative and very instructional. I am glad to have come across this one as I had been trying for some time to cheaply build a cabinet from scratch. I was able to nab a mortal kombat cabinet from Walmart for 200$ on clearance. So this will make that cab many times over better. I wonder if you might can do an updated build at some point to add led lighting to the cabinet and possibly change the wooden marquee out for a back-lit one.

HELP! Modded my Mortal Kombat cabinet with RP4 and this guide. Very happy. However, I have visual "noise" on my monitor (kinda like "static" on screen). It's not severe and almost disappears when playing and using shaders/filters. However, it's irritating. Used the HDMI/LCD controller listed here from Amazon. Monitor works fine when running the original Mortal Kombat board/PCB. Pi works fine when plugged into a different monitor as well. Issue must be somewhere with the HDMI LCD controller. Anyone have any similar experiences or thoughts on troubleshooting? Thanks in advance.

What I love most is how simple you make it and how you like to drive the point of being reasonable for the build rather than going all out just because you or anyone else can. I like how often you repeat yourself which is important when watching these Educational videos as you take the information in and start getting new ideas, you need to hear the same thing at different moments to ground you and remain practical. Fantastic Upload! Especially because everyone has been waiting for someone to mod the cabniet and who knows what sort of video we could have gotten from anyone else. If you see the speaker cone push out when you tap then you are in the correct phase and you'll know which wire in positive and negative. If the speaker cone pulls down then you are out of phase and you'll know you just need to flip the wires around to have the correct phase. Are those the baseball bat style sticks? I want to mod one and want to use sticks and buttons used on the neo geo arcades. Ive researched and i think they're made by happ. Do your sticks have a smooth 360 "feel" like no square or hex gate? Tia

ETA, is it required to replace the joystick and buttons for it to work with the pi, or can you leave the stock controllers as is and just replace the cpu and motherboard with the pi?

@@Dr.Ticklebum69 How do you keep the existing buttons since it is an IDE cable and according to ETA, the Pi's IDE cable has a different pinout.

Oni Sama - I think you’ll need to get 2xusb Joystick board. Mainly Pi only takes USBs not IDE

The ribbon cable is NOT IDE. It is just a ribbon cable carrying all of the switch circuits to the stock computer. The Pi has 17 GPIO pins which technically after joysticks are connected would allow you to have a total of 9 buttons. This cab uses 16 for a total of 24 circuits. Even if it were possible for RetroPi to read the GPIO (not sure if it is, I havent played with it yet) there arent enough pins. What you CAN do (and ETA did say this at the beginning) is just buy the USB encoder boards for about $6 each and connect the stock joysticks and buttons to them. However he also did say that the stick button s and joysticks are junk, which is why he replaced them all.

Is the install the same for the 4 player TNMT 1up?

lugfish yea you just have to get 4 usb panels for the buttons instead of 2 how he did. Maybe even a multiple usb device.

How do you turn this on and off? I didn't notice you include a switch. I am getting ready to build this.

It looks like we have to go to the back to the power strip every time. I want to see a mod that includes a power switch up front for the power strip and also make use of the included power switch to safely power down the raspberry before complete shut down.

I already changed out my joysticks and buttons. I'm using Happ joysticks. I noticed on your joysticks, you have a single connection. Mine has 4 connections. Can I still use mine and how?

I’m new at this... I’m following this video to mod my street fighter 1up. I have everything except for the raspberry pi. I see Raspberry pi 4 online. Would that be better than the our 3 b+ ? I want to play street fighter 3 and Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Can anyone help me? Or point me in the right direction? Thanks

For items like the amp, I'd recommend using velcro instead of double sided tape. This way, if you need to remove anything in the future, you can pull the amp off the side to access the wires. Much easier than trying to disconnect by reaching around to the far side.

Yes.. and i know to never use zip ties... Instead, use Velcro wrap.
