Elder Dragon was the name of the dragon, We've gone through a few iterations of Elder so I can't remember what version it was in 2017, now it's a big creature that teams will fight around after 30+ minutes that gives a huge game ending Buff to your team to let you fight the other team for the next few minutes at a huge advantage Worlds Ceremonies 2015 - Was more of a Traditional Sports Ceremony Feel to it, No real Song/Cineamatic, just a Annoucer, Lighting Effects and Annoucing the players one by one 2016 - Effectively just a Cinematic Showing Live with Cool Effects being broadcasted on a Holographic Screen, and a DJ(felt more like a High End Dance Club kind of vibe) 2017 - You could only see it with a App I believe on your phone live, or watching the live broadcast - Was them starting to branch out a bit with the AR tech 2018 - KDA/PopStars - You could see the AR on the screens behind the live show - AR really was a part of the centerpiece of the show for the first time alongside the singers(you could even see this as the KDA Avatars were in the center of the screen, the singers to the side), every other attempt before this was just a gimmicky add on to the Main show, like the dragon from 2017 - This was the first time We had AR Blending in with the Singers/Performers fully 2019 - This was the big one, easily the best opening ceremony League has ever done imo - Audience could see everything live that we could watching the live stream without any additional experence, won't say to much to avoid spoiling it. This is one of the best Ceremony's I've watched of any game/show/movie/event let along League 2019.2 - Would recommend the 10 months, 10 Minutes Documentary about the making of 2019 , it's pretty solid as well 2020 - After the 2019 one, the hype for the 2020 was real along with it being the 10 year anniversity, however due to Real world things, It was... allright, some cool effects, but was let down due to technical issues - the pandemic hit full stride, and the Live event got cancelled, so we got a Virtual one only, and being they had no time at all, it was Very flashy, but had issues 2021 - This was shown at the same time as the Premier was shown for Arcane - Very good in a Pandemic world where things still aren't back to normal 2022 - Lil Nas - Pretty solid all things considered, we started getting back into the Live Events, and the spectacle League can give off - Wasen't my cup of tea just becasue I'm not the biggest fan of Lil Nas style of Music, but was pretty good all things considered

This was hosted in Beijing, China, so that is why the majority of the audience there speaks Chinese

I know this comment is quite late, but i would say that technically the first year I'd say they had a big opening ceremony was 2014 with imagine dragons -warriors in Korea(and even before that they had a live orchestra play the worlds orchestra song but i forgot which year. Although 2014 was a bit different because they also had a post championship imagine dragons concert where they played radioactive, on top of the world, and one other song. Warriors was the only thing for the ceremony, but before they started there was like an introductory traditional korean like war drum line thing which was cool and ID even used the massive drum in their performance. When you compare it to the ones today its kinda mid, but 2014 was the first time i saw Worlds and seeing that performance was super shocking and unexpected. It holds a special place for me and i have watched worlds every year since 😂 -Aulos Macabre

I believe it was just AR back then, so phones and stuff.

the visual effects are just VR or AR, considering this was 6 years ago (TrollDespair time...) probably AR through an app on peoples phones, mb they gave out devices specifically for it. And the dragon is just elder dragon that spawns on the map after one team takes 4 regular dragons (think of it like a team objective that gives permanent or temporary buffs).

The chinese act at the start is Jay Chou one of the biggest pop star in China. He owns a team in Taiwan called J-team as well. Because his deep connection to league Riot invited him to make a song for this ceremony. It's like Pop-stars but not as successful i guess is the best way to put it

So with this (and the KD/A effects from 2018) It's important to realize that people at the concert couldn't see them, it's strictly on the video. The technology to do this is basically the same as the first down line that gets put on the field in the NFL, actually simplified. Think Augmented reality like in Pokemon Go, but the camera is your phone The Dragon is just "on top" of the video (the NFL line works a little differently, a chromakey using the green on the field, instead of an alpha key), and the dragon is pre-animated (shadow and everything), and the camera is robotic with pre-programed moves that match up with the animation. You'll notice that nothing passes in front of the dragon, which is a lot harder to do. The NFL line works backwards in that the camera movement is live, but the camera knows the shape of the field and the angle and position it's pointed, and tells the device generating the line that information so it can be shaped and positioned correctly.

Riot Games also won the Outstanding Live Graphic Design category at the 39th Sports Emmy Awards with this ^^. It's like the Academy Awards (movies) but for all sort of sports-related things.
