The Dodecahedron likely was a land surveying instrument for distance measuring. They have opposing holes of different diameters, so staring through one side and walking away until both holes visually seem to become the same size gives you a fixed distance. There are also markings (not numbers) around the holes to indicate which side measures which distance. I watched a documentary about these things. For a toy or throw weapon they were too difficult to make, so it must have been a precision instrument for science.

I have a hypothesis that Roman dodecahedrons were used as a type of sundial to track the months of the year and the moon's cycles. This idea aligns with the well-documented Roman interest in astronomy and calendrical systems. The twelve faces of the dodecahedrons, each featuring holes of varying diameters, could correspond to the sun's changing positions throughout the year. Alternatively, they might have also been designed to monitor the moon's phases and its position in the sky, which predictably shifts for each lunar month.

The Roman Dodecahedron was used for decimation of Roman Legions. Romans recruited from the twelve tribes of Rome. The dodecahedron was used as a die to determine which tribe within the Legion was to be killed for the decimation. All members of the selected tribe within the Legion would be killed. The knobs fixed the problems of a twelve sided die rolling too much, and they would make it much less likely for the dodecahedron to come to rest with the heavy side down. After rolling the die the dodecahedron would be pressed into wax (or other substance) to permanently record which tribe within the Legion was to be killed. The rings or decorations on each side were to verify that the dodecahedron was pressed fully into the wax to assure an accurate recording of the decimation choice. Because of the life and death impact of Roman Dodecahedrons they needed to be made from a material that yields a precise object, that is hard to damage, that is difficult to tamper with. The archeological distribution of Roman Dodecahedrons shows it was invented during or after Caesar. Animosities and rivalries between Roman tribes would assure the selected tribe would accept their fate as otherwise they would be one against eleven within the Legion. The religious pentagram aspect of the Roman Dodecahedrons would assure the troops that it was the Roman god Saturn that was making the fateful choice.

@Pax.Alotin The Romans had one common language, which the tribes they fought would know how to read, as they had many returning Roman citizens among them for centuries by then. The lack of record is not surprising for a secret protecting device, and translation should not be that relevant between high ranking Roman leaders.
@dinomite592
3 ай бұрын
@Pax.Alotin Good questions. All Roman Legions were recruited from the Twelve Tribes of Rome. The Roman Dodecahedron was used to select which soldiers were to be killed. Decimation of Roman Legions occurred right up until Emperor Constantine. After the civil war between Pompey and Caesar there were no wars near Rome nor even the Italian peninsula. After Caesar most of the wars were in northern Gaul and England, and none near the city of Rome. And, Decimation was a discipline meant for armies in the field, in an emergency, where the only nearby authority was the General. If the Roman Dodecahedron was invented during or after Caesar, and it's use ended sometime around Constantine due to it being a Pagan ritual, then the distribution should be northern Gaul, Germany, and England from the years around 0 A.D. to around 400 A.D.

My own suggestion is perhaps a variant on the idea they were candle holders, or rather a kind of lampshade or even a kind of planetarium. A candle might have been placed in the centre. This would cause round lights to be cast on the walls of a darkened room. It was a way of creating the illusion of planets or stars in space, like a planetarium. This fits in with the idea of a dodecahedron being the shape that represented the heavens. Also, it explains why they were made of metal not wood, and generally show no signs of wear. I understand that there is no reference to them in Roman literature. Perhaps this is because we do not know what they were used for. It would be interesting if the Romans did make a reference to something creating the appearance of stars on the wall - star maker or something.

The most likely explanation was described on a small channel with 80 subscribers. Can't find it now but it was a wax seal imprinter for sealing coded message letters. The varying diameters are used to make the wax seal cylinder on the big wooden "box like" letter to determine the thin wooden double disc code wheel to be used. At the end of each letter or word you rotated the outer wheel (which had holes matching the 5 round pegs), giving you the corresponding letter. The thin wood discs had this cylinder that fitted in the holes that determined the coding wheel to be used. Using a simple cube with holes would have given only 6 codes: This has 12... Their manufacturing ability could not go beyond 12 code wheels per device...

@@apennameandthata2017 Wrong, because the hole matched to the seal would require to use the opposite hole sitting on top of the decahedron for the disc, and all those holes opposite to each other are mismatched in size, which is why you need the tool to determine the correct opposite side disc size to use, especially if they bother with a decoy message if you try to match the disc straight to the seal size. That is precisely why all those holes are mismatched, and that you find these tools in military camps on border or contested areas. That opposite side hole enigma layer has been missed in the video I mentionned, but in fact it explains why the decahedron is not optional to do the decoding.

Wikipedia claims it might be for measuring to see if coins have been clipped, which was a common fraudulent practice in Roman times to make more coins. I like the idea of them being spool knitting devices for making gloves of different sizes for different sized humans, baby through to male adult. Perhaps the fact that spool knitting devices were first discovered in France wasn't a coincidence.

They are often found in areas in which combat took place. They are obviously hand held. Their role was important enough to spend significant resources to construct them based on an almost identical blueprint. Modern science is not in full possession of a grasp of the true laws of physics if we base our assumption that Konstantin Meyl and Dewey B. Larson's work comes closer to modeling reality. Conclusion: The dodecahedron was a hand-held tool making use the user's ability to form scalar waves in the base of the palm. The shape is a kind of resonant chamber designed to channel then accumulate this energy until it was released perhaps as an energy beam. Think of the two mirrors that form the resonant cavity of a laser. The carvings of a Sumerian god depicted him wielding a pine cone in his hand, pointing it like a tool or weapon. The pine cone is an ancient symbol representing the pineal gland which is associated with supernatural powers. There is a statue of a giant pine cone at the Vatican which is the seat of the cabal which is hoarding all the ancient hidden high technologies they are keeping from the public. Also, the last time I posted this comment, KZitem erased it! Conclusion: At least one of the KZitem censors was aware that I came too close to the truth and the Deep State does not want us to know this.

1) an "asking thing" , as archaeologists would say 2) a Roman version of worry beads/rosary, spinner or hoola hoop (do the last two still exist?) if they date similarly - "short term fad" 3) with one hole larger you would think they "contain" something loose but of a size, like potpourri ie a nosegay. Too small for messages, Romans didn't have paper. Unworkable as purses.

I’ve seen them used for knitting fingers for gloves, they’d weave across one surface then push that weave whilst still attached to the nodules progressively through the holes and weave further layers to build up the depth or length of finger. The differing holes sizes accommodated for the difference in finger girth.

That idea has a lot of problems with it, though. I urge you, when you read a post on social media like that, don't just accept it at face value. Fact-check it and look into any counter arguments as well. I'm reminded of a favorite quote from history: "Don't believe everything you read on the internet just because there's a picture with some text next to it" - Abraham Lincoln

A demonstration of skills and attainment? Apothecaries have some signs a metal forger, smith, swordmaker or shield maker might have another iconic sign? What "professions" could be attributed to areas where they were found?

The dodecahedron affords a Hamiltonian circuit of the vertices - you could use the ball shapes to wrap a cord around every vertex and return to the beginning without crossing over itself. So could this be a type of fad puzzle, curiosity, or game?

The Dodecahedron seems to have two functions, one is to serve as a Dice 🎲 piece, to get the answer to a prayer. Basically roll it and what hole is on top is the answer. The "casting of lots," was a very popular method of resolving doubts and disputes and has been practiced by all ancient cultures. A super famous account of this behavior can be found in the story of Jonah, when the seamen cast lots to find out who God was angry with. Secondly, these objects would make excellent Ciphers for coded messages. If the holes are of different size all around, then each hole represents a pre-set message. How it works: these would have been made in sets of at least two, but more could work just as flawlessly. Each hole would have a peg that precisely fits it and were probably made of a durable stone, like marble. To the untrained eye, they would appear as a good luck stone or talisman. These pegs would function in similar fashion to those used in the game called Battleship. A commander of an army group would have one exactly like another commander and each would have a key as to each holes message. Messages would be sent via the peg that fits the appropriate message hole. This way, the messenger hadn't a clue what the messages were and if caught by an enemy, no amount of torture could get the truth out, because the messenger is clueless as to what the peg means. To expand the amount of messages per Dodecahedron, painting the pegs with colors, adding stripes, or any graphic would be all that is necessary for an almost endless list of coded messages.

A channel describes it having rotating coded wood wheels with precise hub cylinders. A cube would only give 4 codes, this has 12.

I don’t get why this is so hard. It’s built for putting hot cooking pot on, and A candle can be placed inside the keep the food warm. Could be put on wood in the dirt on the table and function wherever you are, it made out of metal that can be cool quickly and packed up to go.

Notice how most of them have holes all of different sizes? It could be a gauge for wooden shafts (arrows, spears...), or a ring-gauge, to measure fingers, or to check rope size, or to check the size of a coin or a piece of precious metal, to determine their value in trade. Heck, it could've been used to measure a lump of salt....which I've heard had monetary value at that time. Did they have spaghetti noodles yet? You know those spaghetti serving spoons with the portion-measuring hole used to select the right amount of dry noodles for cooking? Now, one of the examples shown was very different from the rest. It looked more crudely crafted, and didn't have the selection of variously sized holes. That one could've been made as a paperweight...by someone who'd seen one of the REAL ones used that way.

How about a rope making apparatus for joining separated twine into cord through holes on one side and out a correlating diameter single hole on the other side and onto a hook being twisted by a rope spinner. The knobs would maybe hang a weight that keeps the dodecahedron from spinning with the rope as it twists?

We have similar objects today that are made without any logical use, but which represent a number of challenges that a professional must be able to master.
