I spent ton of money on rubber wood molding on my arches but I am so glad I came across your video so I will be curving all future moldings very inexpensively. Thank you for sharing this video on KZitem.

Thank you for the tutorial! To get the exact length of the arch, tape the inside arch from one end to the other. Take the tape off and put it on your trim and you should get the exact measurement.

Wonderful job...I do have a suggestion on the light switch plate that worked for me. I have had several where the door casing extended past the plate cover also and I just put a piece of tape over the plastic cover and cut off the excess with my chop saw (I used the finest blade I had). The tape over the cut line kept it from chipping and allowed me to mark it without permanently marking the plastic plate. You could also do the same type of cut with your band saw. A light edge sanding with a sanding block and it butted up perfect to the casing. Easy solution...:)

I did that initially but didn't like what I saw. It just didn't look right to me. It did butt up against the casing but looked odd. Maybe it depends on how much you need to cut? Anyway, whatever works and is acceptable to you is what I always say!

I will be trying this out to create a framed look on one of our bathroom mirrors. It's arched at the top so I've been looking for a creative way to make it look like an actual hanging mirror instead of something the previous owners glued to the wall. I'm thinking of using white wood filler for the kerfs, do you think that would be acceptable?

Or source entire arch trim kits from the suppliers in Ukraine and ship them back to the USA like we did for our house. $200 gets you the equivalent of a $2400 arch "kit" here in the USA. European doors, windows and arch trim are light years ahead of what we have available here in the states. Good business opportunity for an importer who has the time and logistics....

Excellent job.. I have built an arched passway in my home and have been looking for casing options.. so I plan on following your method. mine is nine feet across so i can see that I will be in for a long haul lol. I do have a quick question for you though.. had you considered using sandable/paintable calk to fill the cut lines? and if you chose against that was there a reason? that was what I had been originally planning to use but if their is a pitfall that I'm not aware of that made you chose the spakel over the calk I would be very interested to know. Thankyou so much for the video I so enjoy nice quality workmanship.
@kaydee457

No, I never gave it any thought. I like the spackle because it has a very fine fill and of course Is easily sandable. Once there's a coat, or two of latex over the molding you'll never see the kerfs.

Hey man...working on one of these projects. Really appreciate the information and the video. Question. You said go over each side rough 9 inches...see that you had a fair amount of waste after. My casing that I have all painted is about 4 inches on each side maybe a little more. Is there any chance you think that would be enough before I make all these cuts
@kaydee457
3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the curvature you're using. The curvature dictates the rough length and you need to go past the vertical stiles on either side of the top piece. So if it's 4 inch wide moulding, you need to at least go past the two pieces on the sides (8 inches) plus the width of the opening itself if you were to cut the piece with no curvature. The curvature is also going to add to the needed length so I really can't answer you question without seeing it myself. If you've already painted the moulding how are you going to fill it with spackle and not affect the paint?
@mikecasey3062
3 жыл бұрын
@@kaydee457 that make sense. I had a bunch of trim painted. I was just going to spackle it and repaint. My trim is 3.5 inches. Window before arch is 83 inches....my trim is 8 feet long so 96-83 leaves me with only 13 inches...so 6.5 on each side. I believe I am going to be about and inch short but wasn’t sure. I didn’t want to go out and buy a 12 foot piece but I also don’t want to make all those cuts and be short. From what I am judging I need a longer piece. Thanks for your time and info
@mikecasey3062

The inside curvature measurement is 86.75+3.5+3.5=93.75 So with a 96 inch piece of trim that leaves me 2.25 inches for error. I measured the curvature with a tape so it’s not 100% but if anything that measurement should be long. I am thinking it might be doable. I know this is a lot of information over text and don’t worry about responding. Appreciate all the help in the video. Think since I have the trim it might be worth the risk. Just not much room for error lol.

Major wall surgery. There's no room to move it to the left, there's a stud there in the way......AND..on the other side of the wall there's another 4 gang switch box in the same area that you suggest to move the box...They won't fit in the same space. This is to ignore the obvious which would be that the wiring likely would be too short too. Trust me, I looked every which way at this.....If you're doing new construction then anything can be done. Not so when remodelling.

Why not rip the moldings with a thin kerf blade instead? Should be much faster, and it will be easy to bend them into place. Put the pieces on the arch one-by-one, and then fill any gaps with caulking.
@kaydee457
8 жыл бұрын
+Justin H Because you'll never get your top curved casing to mate up with the two side stiles. They'd be different widths. Even the slightest difference in width will jump out at you when you mate the miters. The whole idea here is to use off the shelf casings from HD and bend them to mate to the same casing from the home center. Trust me, if you rip you will remove wood and it is very hard to control (unless you have a dedicated saw made to do just that) and as I said, you'll have a hell'uva time controlling the width of the casing.

This seems like better option. You can use 2 pieces of trim to eliminate saw cut. I'm just trying decide between pvc or mdf casing

Never buy molding at Lowes or HD, its a rip off always buy from Builders 1st source, Stock, or one of those lumber yards. That's if you have in your area.
@kaydee457

+MIKE VARGO Never heard of them. All the bolection moldings and chair rail I used was bought from the "local" lumber yard which is 40 miles from my home......We only have the big box stores since the recession and the downturn in building all but wiped out all the small businesses selling lumber and building supplies. Best bet for most people is Home depot, cut to length, casings. If you do your home, incrementally over time, then at least you're (almost) guaranteed to get the same molding from year to year.

the distance between kerfs was approximately 1/8 of an inch... is that correct?
@kaydee457
7 жыл бұрын
More or less. The longer the piece is the farther apart they can be. The tighter the bend (short pieces) the closer to each other they need to be. edit: I just saw your post below and recall that yours is 9 feet. An 1/8 is plenty close enough. Don't forget to leave space at each end to do the miter. Also, be aware that scroll blades come in various thickness of metals. You want to use the thinnest blade you can find to minimize the kerf's width.

Still not sure if I can use this technique for half circle arch??
@kaydee457
8 жыл бұрын
+inellstinkerbells Depends on the radius and the width of the molding you're trying to use. To see if it will work you would need to cut/try a piece first on the smallest window/door opening you have to see if you can make the bend with the molding of your choice. The width of molding is critical. Too wide and it's not going to bend easily. If you can do the smallest opening (sharpest/tightest bend) then any larger opening would be easier as the bend would be less. Of course if you have only one size opening then you need to try only that.

Interesting. But instead of removing the top casing to make the cut, you could've used a multi-tool or something similar to cut it without having to remove the top casing.

@kaydee457
5 жыл бұрын
Hard to say. Too much water used on your paper towel or rag when wiping down the filler subsequently causing the filler to shrink back is my best guess. Second guess: You're using a saw blade that's too thick on your scroll saw and the kerfs are too wide? Without more info I can only guess......
@willardamtower1082
5 жыл бұрын
@@kaydee457 Thanks. Yes, I did use a wider blade for my cuts. I did not completely wipe down with the damp rag as suggested. I left a little filler and sanded using a very fine sanding block. I even tried using drywall skim coat on a sample piece of wood and got the same results. For $4.51 per lft, I ordered Polyurethane molding and will replace the ones I tried to make. (2 ea 5' and 2 ea 4' for $81.18). My labor doing the filling and sanding was too time consuming with the less than desirable results. I did like your idea and that may be an alternative for high up jobs where it is less likely to be viewed close up.
