I had a cheap fiberglass bow as a child and that was one of my favorite toys. I really enjoyed just shooting at makeshift targets or trying too shoot as far as i could trying out various angles and so on. I would probably have to agree with NUSensei, they aren´t that good for archery but if you want to buy a toy that will keep your child active and more dependent get the cheap one. But kids are kids so keep a eye on your kids while they are shooting so the don´t do anything dangerous or try to hunt with them... i kinda did both but luckely i wasen´t good enough to hit any magpies which were the only thing i ever tried to hunt with it.

I like small, compact quality. I have found two "youth" composite recurve bows (about 48 inches) that are essentially kid size but adult quality. They are a hoot to shoot. One is made by Bear and the other by Samick. I won't say the exact models because I don't want them to become hard to find cuz I may want to buy more myself. ;-) Oh, and BTW, one is 30 pounds and the other 35 pounds draw weight so not really wimpy, they just have a shorter draw-length which is easily managed.

Great video! I'm always watching your videos when I see them. But this one touched me. For many years ago I had a very similar bow i received from Ebay. I ended up cutting 4 inches off each limb. Which made the bow about 60 pounds at a short draw. I practiced shooting out of my car at 30 yards with this bow. So in summary a little modification and you can hunt with this bow. Side note i never unstrung the bow after I shortened it and one day I found it broken in my closet. So. Try it. But learn from my mistakes.

Hi NuSensei, I'll like to get one for my sister (13+), I know she's kind of big, but to be honest I don't know whether it will be a long term thing for her (as in pursuing it), will like to test this out. Will the arrow head split quickly with her using it? She's pretty small. Will be great to hear from you.

Just came across this. I like keeping a couple of these around to use when teaching younger kids the basics of archery. I find them in yard sales for next to nothing, and they are good for sparking the interest in archery before moving up in cost, size, weight, etc. These early videos of yours are really good and still relevant and wouldn't hurt to be reposted in some of the 'off weeks'.

The Bear Titan is great for kids and even good as a lightweight practice bow while you're beginning to develop the musculature for archery. Of course if you're an adult you'll want something better in a couple of weeks, but this sort of bow has introduced millions to the sport. I have my bow and a kids' bow for when grandkids come to visit and want to shoot with me.

I am considering purchasing a "youth" fiberglass bow. Not for children, but to allow friends from college to try archery in their backyards when I visit them. I do own a Samick Sage, but I am always anxious about the inattentive friend who might accidentally dry fire it without thinking or otherwise damage the bow. While the bow you are reviewing seems like a cheaper youth fiberglass option, what about more solid constructions such as the Bear Firebird or Bear Titan? Those were the types I was considering, and I have heard them described as fairly solid for their price range ($30-45). The Firebird is a 35lb draw, and the titan is a 25lb draw, both accommodating 28" draw lengths. These woudn't be for children, but people in their 20s and so on. Mostly for them to gauge if archery is something they might want to take up, especially since an archery range might be 2 hours away by car. I feel like some people, especially the reluctant, really just need to loose their first arrow before they realize how fun archery can be. That's all I would really intend this bow for. An introduction that lasts an afternoon in the backyard during a barbeque or such. That being said, I've heard others report that the Bear youth fiberglass bows are decent enough to actually train with. What are your thoughts?

I bought one of those cheap fibreglass bows once, wrapped it in some leather so I could use it for LARP and voila. It's not very fun to shoot though in my opinion. I defenitely got alot more fun out of my 80 eur Ragim Matrix. It may be double or triple the money of a fibreglass bow but its so much better. You can actually shoot well with it.

Now finding myself in the position of acquiring equipment for a young kid who may or may not be interested in archery for very long, I will say that you can actually upgrade this bow to perform way better than you would think it would from its appearance. I dug an old one out of the garage, missing string and arrows. String was replaced with a dacron string with a brass nock point, and got half a dozen youth carbon arrows with feather fletchings. Sewed a tab myself out of some leather scraps I use for crafting (some leather scrap bags come from high-end furniture or handbag companies, and they use really good smooth leather perfect for tabs). End result shoots pretty much alongside my Samick Polaris. Now would I recommend you buying a new one and doing upgrades? Absolutely not. But if you're already an archer and you can do some of these upgrades cheaper (DIY string, cut down some old broken arrows, old tab?), the end result can be surprisingly accurate.

This bow looks like it would be suitable for converting into a stone/pebble bow. Just make a string with a pouch, and use a slingshot-like pinch draw. The thing is, you need a kyudo-like khatra twist. That swings the bow outward so the pebble misses the bow (and your hand). That bow's rubber grip and light limbs look perfect for performing this technique. So basically, it could be a lot of fun for going to a stream with a lot of pebbles; perhaps to hunt small birds or fish.

Good points! Was that a cable tie or something on the limb, as your aiming system? May I ask, why don't you hold a bow like this at full draw for longer like you would with your target bow? Have you shot a Rolan Snake bow? I think they are good bows for the money, that fall somewhere between these two kinds that you showed. A beginner could go further, and an experienced archer could have more fun with a Snake bow than with the fibreglass kids bows, in my opinion. They are 60" and range from 18-26lbs, so they don't replace the fibreglass bows for younger kids though.
@wayne2wax
6 жыл бұрын
Iron Pirate, that "Cable Tie thingy" you inquire about is a "string Keeper". When you unstring your Fibreglass Stickbow, you hold the top end where the larger loop is against the Riser, and then you "roll" the rubber Keeper down over the loop. that way, it holds your string on bow so that is doesn't get lost

I bought this type of bow since I cannot afford the 'real' bow ;-; But does this fiberglass bow need to be un-stringed when not in use?
@IsaacKuo
3 жыл бұрын
He has a video all about what happens to bows when they're left strung. It included a lot of bows he left strung by accident. Basically, the fiberglass bows were unaffected no matter how long they were left strung. Wooden self bows, in contrast, really needed to be unstrung when not in use. But with such a light bow, I think you'd want to unstring it anyway. A "stick" is much more convenient to store and carry.
@Acelryss

Forget the cheaper bows! This video is a great example that with a proper form you can shot even with these horrendous bows! GREAT VIDEO!
@NUSensei
8 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, I did have to cut a fair amount of blooper footage that involved "missed" shots. While a kids bow in the hands of a trained archer looks epic, the bow is a huge limiting factor. Even with consistent form, the arrows didn't come out consistently. It's "good enough", and most importantly it is safe for kids, but it is not a piece of equipment that rewards form and skill. That's why I strongly urge people away from starting out with a cheap fiberglass bow. It's better than nothing, and if all you want to do is shoot arrows, that's fine, but it doesn't enable you to progress.

Im trying to get back into archery after a three year 4 year break and find these videos very insightful and useful however I remember going to a 3D target range before with fibreglass arrows as they were cheap and i did not mind loosing them. The gentleman that ran the range quickly came out with a handful of leftover arrows from the range and told me to use those as he had experience of and heard countless stories of micro fractures developing in the fibreglass arrows so that they split when being shot causing injury to the archers bow hand even with recurves shooting from a rest due to poor arrow quality. I was wondering if this was still the case? Or if the there had been a significant increase in quality with a certain brand or across the spectrum?
@NUSensei
8 жыл бұрын
Fiberglass arrows might have been a luxury technological innovation at one stage, but as of current they sit in the bottom "throwaway" tier of arrows. Fiberglass, and carbon arrows especially, do tend to fracture when hitting hard targets, which can result in splinters that are difficult to get out, and at worst the arrow can shatter on release if the structural integrity is compromised. Most 3D archers are comfortable with using carbon, but you have to conscious of checking arrows for damage if you miss a shot.

The bow depends on what discipline you are competing in. The Sage isn't a competitive bow, but depending on the equipment and rules, it might be OK. Draw weight should be around 25# for a junior.

You said that you could use a box stuff it with some rags and it would serve very well as a target would it work for bows of a higher draw weight. Also I'm kind of doing archery on a budget since targets can cost a fairly hefty price what would you personally use as a makeshift target? Could you use a hay stack?
@NUSensei
8 жыл бұрын
Haystacks are OK. There are a couple of problems: the hay may become too loose and the arrows will go right through, and the straw might scratch your arrows (not a huge problem). Provided the hay is dense enough, it will function as a target butt.

+NUSensei what would you recommend as a fairly cheap, durable target I'm going to use a bow of 40 lbs and over and under?
