This kinda confirms what I've been thinking for a while: the video game industry needs new blood, not as in young people but as in outsiders from other disciplines that can provide different approaches to find solutions. The industry is already saturated with people who are used to the same old methods and can barely think of anything outside the same old formulas, it's like a big workplace echo chamber. The creators of Cuphead are a great example of what the video games need; I also like how this guy thinks.

It's super important for creative pieces like this to be recognized to help encourage new ideas. While I'm not a fan of arcade-fighting games, I loved the whole process of Dragonball Fighterz's forced perspective and animation. Arc System Works did a fantastic job at ripping 2D animation and crunching it into Fighterz and Guilty Gear!

That was the case with GRIS, iirc, whose creator is a painter who wanted to pass on a personal message and decided on a game, and thus joined with technically skilled people that could make his vision come to reality. I love the art style of this game and how you've managed to influence the town around nature and industry. The town feels like it just breathes an aesthetic that I am actually there in the 2D space smelling all the scents and tactile touches of the materials of what everything is made of. The part I really love is that you've managed to make the citizens and MPC move organically with the constraints of being in a 2D world! My only "complaint" which is more of a suggestion is their breathing. I feel that when they inhale they should raise up their ribcage and belly out and when they exhale they should sink their ribcage and belly in. But at the end of the day I don't want to be THAT GUY who tells you how to write your own game, just couldn't help myself to put that point across as it somehow, weirdly bugged me as I feel like that was what was pulling me out of the emersion. Really hope that this gets finished and released, I would love to play it!!

INCREDIBLE!! As a fresh graduate, I had similar question asking myself what I am doing in architecture. All these years of training seems redundant for just drafting drawing in the office. Anyway, I start my unity learning journey couple months ago, and your video is truly a inspiration and new possibility! Keep it up!

Interesting to hear the perspective of one who has applied their map design in real-world applications, and I think there is value in the parallels between the two design paradigms. Though I have to push back on a sentiment you expressed a few times throughout the video regarding the want to necessarily consolidate facilities for player convenience. You said [paraphrasing]: "imagine having to go to multiple shops to get items", in the real world, maximising convenience is logical and almost always positive, in games, this is _not_ logic you want to apply broadly. By their very essence, games intentionally pose inconveniences for players to overcome; the objective of a game dev isn't to minimise inconvenience, it's to create inconvenience on purpose and make it rewarding and fun.

"Imagine having to go through 10 stores to buy all the seafood you need" Sounds neat actually, if you just have like a big line of stores and the seafood out in the open, so you can just walk over and pick it up to buy it. Of course it would be a pain if you had to walk up to each shop owner, open interface, see which kinds they have, etc. That would also neatly help fill the space imo, as each item has its spot (or maybe even 2-3 spots). Depending on how the game should work it could even feel like a nice detail of seeing whats available daily if you wanted to limited the amount of e.g. fish, or have different kinds of fish on different days.

One thing that stuck out to me during the finished walk around was that the crepe shop and ice-cream store could do with a little patio or some other place to enjoy their wares without having to walk around while eating. There are some boxes scattered around the pier too that could be replaced with benches which are more common to see on the customer facing side of stores. Boxes usually go in the back or at least partially hidden between buildings. I really like the neon sign for the chop shop. I'm Japanese, and this is a picture of a Japanese fish market. The basic element of a Japanese fish market is a large amount of ice squares of a few centimeters (roughly one inch) in diameter. I like your videos a lot and will recommend to my friend, who is looking to start an RPG designing project soon. The way you explain concepts, such as obstructed "dead zones", makes it so easy to comprehend even for outsiders like me. I have a suggestion regarding that very issue, just my two cents, but if there is ever an occurrence of combat in dead zones, a framed rectangle can be popped up right on the obscured area, showing the action happening behind the structure. It would be like a mini screen that penetrates the structure, so we do not have to deal with the various details of the building, unlike the "transparent building" solution. The frame of the rectangle could be drawn in the futuristic style to compliment this element of design.

Some other, smaller suggestions: - For nature-taking-over edges, especially that border between grasses and tiles that can be walked over, I think it should be a bit less prominent and has a small "mixture" transitive area of tiles rimmed with grass, rather than all grass and then all tiles. Currently that specific area does not look crossable to me, I was a bit surprised that it is not a tall ledge. - Some more lights, streetlights and hanging lights near certain houses would be nice. - Maybe it would take a lot of efforts, but adding footstep sounds for the main character that correspond with their footwear and ground type, would greatly heighten the immersivity of this world. This whole thing looks absolutely stunning! How long did it take to make this one single town?

I can see where this game could revolutionize Topdown 2d games. The design for the buildings in this game is, to be honest, breathtaking. Cant wait to try it out.

an interesting idea to push the whole post-post-apocalyptic theme would be to have the outgoing edges of the town being the same style of tiles but much more worn out and old. then the grass takes over but you occasionally see a cracked or broken tile sticking out here and there. giving the idea that the town used to be much larger but was destroyed and overtaken by nature, then later people came in and restored it, but its not quite as big as it used.

It was like Balamb Town at first, but then it's a whole new town. A dream town. Thank you bro. Have a great day. Here take my hat to your inventory 🎩

Please keep your integrity and don't let platforms like Steam push you into putting out an unfinished product. This looks great, I'd cop it just off the aestethics and design choices alone. Keep doing what you do.

The gaming industry went from creating games they want to play themselves, out of passion. Into developers putting out ideas instead of finished products. So that they can cash out during development and/or abandon it once they feel like they made enough off it. Which seldom have any longevity. We need people like Eric Barone and passionate indie developers to change the climate of the industry. That is why I will always support people like Pixel Architect. You gotta support the changes you want too see.

Do you mean publishers? Not sure if Steam can force developers to do anything. Anyways glad you enjoyed it, and don't worry, I will see it through till the end :) You are right, I think that feeling of completeness is super important for games. There are some games with amazing graphics that don't feel complete, and the experience ultimately falls short. There are some simpler games that feel complete, and those games stand the test of time. Like Runescape stood the test of time better than 99% of MMOs because of it. Will definitely make sure the game as that feeling of "completeness" at the end.

Dude! This was so awesome! I'm a graphic designer, but I've recently found pleasure in the way buildings and environments affect the atmosphere and can create a feeling of an alternate reality, so to speak. It all started for me when I was painting buildings and urban settings, because each building began to have a personality of its own. So when you started talking about your city design and how every detail reflected either the society or theme, I felt that. Thanks for a great video, and detailed look into your design process!

Glad you enjoyed the video! Yes, I think the best cities that everyone likes to travel to are the ones with an interesting story or history, and especially when it reflects in the architecture. Cities created without any links to society usually turn out pretty bland and uninteresting.

As a computer science undergrad student, I am blessed that this video was recommended to me. It felt so good when you explained the path and node of the route, made me remember of the graph theory I learned in my first year. I will be following you from now on, as I found myself a cove of knowledge and inspiration for myself to carry on. Thank you for this beautiful video, along with the soothing narration.

I’m also a recently graduated architect, and what you said at the beginning is so relatable!! I’m now helping a team by making background art and maps for their game. Good luck with your project!
