It is obvious that a terrible spiritual struggle took place here between the architect and his creation. The building is innately beautiful, so it would have required great effort to ensure that the final result was ugly.

Its not the building which pose a problem, but the human behavior which develops in such places, when evil people turn people hunters, greedy thieves & seek to control other's, which is most probably why this lovely building ended up with one ordained person. So we really need to work on our human behavior to successfully house so many homeless people in so many such lovely empty buildings, so people can peaceful live a fulfilling worthy good life & enjoy the nearness of God by living in such lovely building's.

Modern by definition means 'now, recent times'. If the pantheon was built today, it would be therefore a 'modern building'. Modernism/post-modernism/what-ever-you-want-to-call-it is an approach to architecture, a way of thinking, a guiding principle of design. Many of our most iconic buildings are 'pastiche', built in the 19th century and based on structures from thousands of years ago.

Friars give vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Monastics give those, as well as the vow of stability (meaning they stay inside the walls, or within the bounds of the property, perhaps never to leave) until death, unless specifically sent forth by their abbot.

I still don´t understand the adoration for Le Corbusier. I understand he introduced very interesting elements in modern architecture, but still his works seem cold and inhuman, like if you were destined to live in the interior of a freezer made of concrete. Maybe a great theory maker, but it´s so difficult to live in a theory.

Your ability to see things in their abstract reduction is a special gift that is not common. The arrangement of parts is a compositional masterwork. I see by many of the comments that there are a lot of viewers who would like to see decorative details that break up the monumentality.

@@rr7firefly The problem with many architects is that the supposed "concept behind" their design is not necessarily behind the mind of the beholder i.e not everybody has the "special gift". Thankfully, the architecture of imposition (of a "special" elite) is giving way to more democratic, coaxing, socially functional approaches and forms. "It is a concrete block on the side of a hill" (Le Corbusier - 05:40); say no more.

While modern in the sense of the word doesn't mean something has to look a certain way I don't totally disagree with you. Corbusier was honestly insane he wanted to destroy all the old European capitals and make them look like housing projects, some of his smaller designs are ok though. Many of the so-called 'modern' buildings today are simply uninspired and utilitarian and cut and paste, Corbusier and the soviets would be proud.

This building is a master piece of architecture. One in infinity. It wants to be inhabited by infinite minds, by true love, by freedom, by freedom of mind, by minds who are free from religion, by modern art, by classical music, by animals and the people who love them. I am infinitely grateful that Le Corbusier lived on this planet.

And yet somehow this is celebrated architecture. People who enjoy this should visit Russia, we have loads of Soviet concrete prison style buildings left... if you want I can invent some pseudo intellectual / philosophical backstory to justify its existence... I can even put some freaky music and sound effects to it to enhance the BS and make it more palatable. Thanks for sharing the video though. Thumbs up.

Form is structure, not image, remember that. What do we have now?... nothing but "concept-ish" buildings made to impress rather than to work well. If you can't see the merits of those buildings, Modern buildings, then your sight is sensible only to superficial images. ps. it's not modernism, it's modern.

'ArchitectureMMXII Modern by definition means 'now, recent times'. I believe the actual term you are looking for is 'contemporary'. If 'modern' refers to the 'now, recent times', what could 'post-modernism' possibly mean?!
@csmatthew

There was sometime ago a goat. I suspect I may not have made my point clear. Architecture MMXII below wrote: "If the pantheon was built today, it would be therefore a 'modern building'." I believe this to be an incorrect assertion. Post-modernism refers to a school of thought which reacts against the modernist school. I sought to emphasise that 'modern' means not "now" but refers to a school of architecture. Quite why you ended with a superfluous insult I am not certain.
@irian92

Christopher Matthew i would still say that the pantheon would be post-modern if it wasbuild today because it already existed. so it has partly or completely copied

I believe there may be ambiguity in terminology. Whether architectural labels are to be applied to eras or schools of thought, I am defending the view that architectural labels apply to schools of thought. My understanding is far from encyclopaedic and I speak from personal prejudice and opinion. Personally I would describe a rebuilding of the Pantheon today as 'neo-Classical', but that is because I understand 'post-modernism' to be primarily a reactionary movement in opposition to 'modernism'.

@@csmatthew You are a smart one. Architecture is not the province of those who merely dabble in it, so you will always have to deal with those types. I am constantly frustrated by "dabblers" because I have read quite a few books on the matter after 5 years of majoring in it. Yes, with a degree and then 10 years of professional practice. By the way, one of my all-time favorite books is Venturi's "Complexity and Contradiction..." I am sure you know it.

It’s a perfect summation of everything that went aesthetically wrong with the Church in the 20th Century. Joyless, ugly, cheap, inhuman. Many have blamed this on Vatican II. But rather, Vatican II could never produce good aesthetic works in that milieu. And I say this as someone who finds great merit in much modern architecture. But the Church never seems to have favored anything other than intellectually pretentious and empty modernism, often if not typically hostile to her own history and forms. Quite sad really.

There was a conscious stripping down of architecture in the latter 20th Century to a compositional simplicity, although in truth the proportional relationships are anything but simple. This was the background that Post Modernism responded to. Among its champions: Michael Graves, Stanley Triggerman, Robert Venturi to name a few.

The building is a crude, cold monstrosity, sitting on a beautiful landscape. Some consider it a work of art? The exterior and the interior is it combination clumsy and brutal forms and crude details. Corbusier is one of the most overrated architects of all time. No matter how the commentator phrases it, or explains its features, it is what it is, there is no other way to describe it -terrible, intellectually pretentious. Crude lumps of concrete inside and outside!. It must have been awful to live there. I can imagine if they had picked an architect like Frank Lloyd Wright what the results could have been!
