I have only just completed my first year of architecture school but I already understand what you're saying. Some of my lecturers are real enough to actually tell us how they work but I guess not too much to add to the even more discouragement we experience with self-doubt, bad critique sessions etc. I try to be optimistic because really that's pretty much all you can do sometimes.

Not just assembly and buildability, it needs to comply with local codes- building, fire, accessibility, etc. Most of the time is spent detailing buildings so they don't leak, other times are spent acting like a traffic cop coordinating drawings amongst contractors, engineers, consultants and city officials. The fear of lawsuits dictates almost every decision. Only 5% of the time is spent on design and drawing pretty pictures. That's the reason I left the profession 5 years after graduation. Oh, the hours and compensation suck too.

If you study composition and geometric arrangement thoroughly as student it will begin to equip you the skills to produce buildings. Pulling things like bicycles, small motors, and then reassemble it will also help understand the parts that form the whole of architecture

Excellent knowledge to take on board. I like how reserved you talk about your subjects, most KZitemrs shout to gain attention, but it's the quality and content of your videos that I come here for. I'm at the cusp of deciding what I want to do, and you explain many of the real world benefits and drawbacks of architecture. Thank you.

I was raised by a carpenter and decorator. Worked with my dad since I was 6, won every art competition I entered as a kid. Lived and walked every street of 3 cities as a hobby to admire the builds. Have had 4 trades businesses since my dad would let me illegally drive his truck. Found some success. Failed and embarrassed myself hard. Ran into huge opportunities. Morphed into a high end furniture designer and maker in high end neighborhoods by accident. Could have started a cabin building business, but backed out. Got an associates, but didn't know what to go into debt for back then so found my way around America and business. My life has forced me to become an architect here at 25 and your videos really helped me weigh the decision. I've met 2 architects and they were bitter and hateful about the state of architecture. I can't really find architects recently out of school that're level headed and realistic like you so it's much appreciated Drew!

I have a ton of respect for anyone who has learned by getting their hands dirty and doing the damn thing lol. Thanks for the comment! A mentor told me once that architecture is a fun profession but a hard business. ...the business is hard, but it’s not impossible. Don’t wish it was easier, wish you were better.

Thank you so much for your videos. They really hit the nail on the architectural world, and really should be talked about more in the architecture community. Watching your videos have really helped my transition into the working world and kind of helped keep me going and knowing that what I'm going through is pretty much the same as most freshies (most of my peers are doing Masters so I didn't really had a reference.)

Do you need to specialize in architecture?
