Join us as we ascend to the top of Iowa's State Capitol! Though many visitors visit the glorious 5-domed Capitol, the ascension to the top is a journey that few ever get to make. Climbing the 298 steps, we pass a very large banner with the insignia of the Grand Army of the Republic, commemorating Iowa's part in the Civil War. It is suspended beneath the ceiling on wires, appearing to magically float in the sky. From the exterior of the dome, we see only the shimmering gold leaf. But from the interior, we discover the dome is constructed of brick. It is only 2 layers thick towards the top, but the walls eventually swell to six feet at the point where they meet the buttresses. The combined mass of all that masonry is what keeps the dome from collapsing. Enjoy your journey up the many stairs, along the catwalks and out onto the balcony where you can see a bird's eye view of the world below.
