Join a mysterious visitor as he revisits the beautifully restored Polk County Courthouse. Designed by the prolific architectural firm of Proudfoot & Bird in 1906, it is one of Iowa's few Beaux Arts style courthouses, boasting such features as gilded columns and 28 unique grotesques that serve as keystones for the second-floor arched windows. The structure has been beautifully restored by OPN Architects and its security upgraded for judges and public visitors. Over the years, large courtrooms in the building were sub-divided into multiple courtrooms to accommodate the number of judicial proceedings, and the colorful original plasterwork of the courtrooms had been covered by drop ceilings. By 2019, the building had 29 courtrooms in the same amount of space. With the recent construction of the Polk County Justice Center, that number is no longer needed in the courthouse. The courtrooms, as well as the rest of the building, have now been restored and will be a source of pride for Iowans for generations to come.
