York City got off to the perfect start on home soil as they won their first league encounter at Bootham Crescent in the 2011/2012 season with a 3-1 victory over Barrow.
Having grabbed a dramatic late win over Ebbsfleet United on the opening day, City fans had much cause for optimism when Gary Mills’ side put on a display of excellent attacking football to sweep aside a traditionally difficult opponent.
Former Barrow hero Jason Walker tapped in City’s opening goal from close range with only seven minutes played.
The rest of the first half was an even affair but, right on the stroke of half-time, former Newcastle United under-21 captain Patrick McLaughlin doubled York's advantage when he slotted home James Meredith's pass, cutting inside and rifling the ball low into the bottom right-hand corner giving Barrow keeper Danny Hurst no chance.
York looked comfortable in the second half with their two-goal lead but, on 81 minutes, the game came back to life when Barrow pulled a goal back when ex-City youth team striker Adam Boyes headed in Kelvin Lomax's cross.
Lomax was then sent off in the 90th minute, getting a second yellow for kicking the ball at a prostrate Jamie Reed, and the extra time and space allowed winger Matty Blair's to seal the win with a neat 12-yard strike.
It was a great start to the season for the Minstermen with plenty more entertainment to follow for the Bootham Crescent faithful during a wonderful season.
