Hey! Amazing vid, really well done. One thing I noticed though: Im MO user and, after cleaning dawnguard.esm twice it was indeed gone, just like u said could happen for MO users. After that, added it again through the overwrite folder as instructed, dragged and dropped it where it's supposed to be. What you did not mention however, is if this happens in MO (mod disappears cuz the file isn't in /skyrim/data anymore), the plugin also disappears. Meaning, after drag-and-dropping it back where it belongs, you also need to do one final step: run LOOT again to get the plugin load order correct again. Either I simply didn't hear this part, or it wasn't included, but yeah that's the only remark i could come up with.. flawless video otherwise :)

Actually no, there's also the manner of proclaiming it is VITAL to work from top to bottom, yet you have us walk through the tutorial with you by starting out with dawnguard, even though update should load before it. I hope that doesnt give any problems (dawnguard > update > Hearthfires > Dragonborn > etc etc)

Hey DFA = ) Very good point regarding to check the load order and to make sure that all is good by running LOOT. Something that I will mention when the video is updated so that there is no confusion for anyone. Working top to bottom is vital but not in every situation. Say you have two mods that need to be cleaned, one of which depending on the other. You don't want to clean a mod against another "dirty" mod or you may have issues or in the least, not have the mod further down the list cleaned properly. Rare, but can happen. In the video, i don't tell anyone to follow along with the specific mods that I am cleaning = ) This is a tutorial for all tes and fo games, and I dont see many fallout 4 users cleaning the dawnguard.esm = ) .. I use the dawnguard.esm because it makes it easier for those who are using skyrim to understand the process of cleaning dg a second time. A big issues with last video was that folks didn't know what I meant when I said "you need to clean dawnguard twice". -Michael

welcome = ) I'm curious then how you manage to get Skyrim working? Even if you purchase the game disc you still need a steam account to verify the game and to make it work (says right on the box that you need a steam account for the game to work). Bethesda did this intentionally to avoid theft and bootlegging where ever possible. Skyrim shoud not work without a Steam account. -Michael

Michael, Thanks for the awesome vids! For new modders having trouble (like me)... I think that the edit programs no longer have hardcoded files for all moddable games. So if you want to mod FO4 get FO4edit and if you want to mod TESV get TESVedit... etc. They all look updated to the same version on nexus.
@gamerpoets
7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, currently all of the pages are updated. You can still just rename the .exe to whatever the game is but they no longer have the file that says "keep with .exe" or whatever? That's odd. Good info. I actually plan on redoing some videos, like xEdit, to show how to install them for each game. I want one to go along with each of my playlists. Just takes time = ) -Michael

I had never heard of this channel until this video, but the clarity of your instructions has instantly gained you another subscriber! I look forward to watching the rest of your informative videos... Keep up the good work brother! We need to have more clear, informative, and engaging education on KZitem (as well as just generally in life). Whenever people try moving into the wondrous depths of PC gaming from the shallow ponds of consoles... Or people try to play with Mods for the first time, or even try to make Mods of their own (and especially people like me coming back to PC gaming after years of Soulless consoles)... we all need information that's easily accessible to us as well as accurate and up-to-date. I feel this has been accomplished here. I hope the other videos are just as good (and may your future videos be as praise worthy) {:~)}

First off thank you so much for making such great videos. They are professional, well thought out and honestly... you guys don't get enough credit or benefits for the work that you put into every single one of them. Now. As I was following along with the video, I found it odd that the xEdit team would have different versions of the software based on what Nexus game it was uploaded too. So I looked into the file version and the upload time. As of me writing this, the current version seems to be 3.2 and at least for FO4 and TES5 it seems to be the same having been uploaded last on, 27 December 2016, for both games with only (literally) 5 minutes difference. That said, and because I'm absolutely new to modding, and using these tools. I just wanted to make sure that I'm not missing something crucially important that would make FO4Edit different from TES5Edit...
@gamerpoets
7 жыл бұрын
Thank you Aurora = ) I'm actually the only person that creates content. I have a few friends who help respond to comments on the facebook page and give me advice and troubleshooting help. xEdit is the generic name for FO4Edit, TES5Edit, so on. They are all the same program. If you rename FO4Edit.exe to TES5Edit.exe FO4Edit will work for Skyrim... because.. it's literally the same program = ) .. and it's designed so that the .exe name will determine which game to handle. So you simply want to install whatever the latest "xEdit" version to date is and then rename the .exe. Those developing and managing xEdit may or may not remember (or care to) upload the newest version to each site. I know they do their best and they may very well upload the newest verison to each site (FO3, Oblivion, FO4, Skyrim, Skyrim 32/64 so on) but in case they don't, that's what you do -Michael

Something like explaining in more detail..."copy as an override into...." or "change IDForm" ... etc. I think you will help quite a lot of people that are wadding and wobbling in google. And probably will be more now with the incoming release of "New" Skyrim (whatever might it be named of called) I say that because i am through the process of installing STEP Revisited LD and there is quite a lot of tes5edit and a series of quality videos would a treasure In any case, thanks a lot for your work and dedication, always following your vids

I love this! You guys really are awesome! I've been playing (and using mods with) Elder Scrolls games since Oblivion. Back then, modding these games was somewhat of a black art and mystery to me. To my knowledge (though I certainly could be wrong), there wasn't a central, authoritative source of up-to-date information which I felt could reliably get me answers for any (or at least most) issues I might have in modding. (Yes, uesp.net was around and it is superb but for modding I didn't find much there, perhaps I just missed it…) I felt like a castaway floundering in an ocean of mod choices without a trustworthy or at least up-to-date guide on how I should go about my modding journey. The learning curve was steep, to the extent that I felt it required a PhD to do things effectively and correctly and due to the varying state of up-to-dateness of the information and the fact that it was scattered all over the place among various sources which may or may not be correct, lead me to question if the PhD journey was even worth it. I finally stopped playing Oblivion since I was spending so much time dealing with all the various mod hassles. It just wasn't fun anymore and detracted from the gaming experience which *should* have primarily been playing the game and not hassling with mod headaches. Your videos are just what I've been looking for. They're detailed and clear enough that misunderstandings are minimized and they provide a lot of good information and references so calling them authoritative wouldn't be amiss. You've just recently published this video so clearly this qualifies as up-to-date. What you along with Gopher and the reddit beginners guide (and probably others which I have yet to discover) have done is give me hope and the desire to mod Skyrim again. A modding PhD is still required and the ocean of mod choices is vast like with Oblivion. The potential for mod issues remains. However, now I have hope that time spent earning that PhD will be worth it. Until such time as modding has progressed to where modding is as simple as a button press (or as you put it a "magical staff of solving") this will have to do and it is a significant improvement to what I knew in the Oblivion days.

I appreciate this video a lot, it really helped. I had a question, however, if you had the time, should we only attempt to clean mods from which LOOT suggests are dirty? For example, I ran up the process to clean the mod "SpringCleaning" (ironic right?) and it seemed to want to remove a worrisome amount of 'Identical to Master' records.
@gamerpoets
7 жыл бұрын
=) Cool name for a mod to clean. Generally, I would say to only clean what LOOT (or BOSS for oblivion) tells you to clean. LOOT is a community supported project that has to be updated manually by its caretakers. So I would report that mod to the LOOT team on github (if it has ITMs) and see what they say. If it has ITMs it will most likely be added to LOOTs list to inform you to clean it but I don't want to make a blanket statement about a mod that I don't personally know of. -Michael

I really appreciate this video series and all the work you do to make it as easy to understand as possible. I have a question about cleaning the official DLCs. Prior to watching this video, I had resolved in my mind that I would not touch the Skyrim DLCs with TES5Edit, because there *must* be a reason why Bethesda did not do it themselves. Cleaning the DLCs for ITMs and UDRs takes all of 5 minutes to complete. In your video you touch on this by saying that Bethesda does not anticipate any user will mod the game, so they didn't take the time to clean them because an unmodded game will not have any issues. This makes sense to me but feels like only a partial answer, and it still leaves the question in my mind on whether or not there is a specific reason Bethesda didn't want the DLCs to be cleaned. So, in short, my question is whether there is *any* potential negative consequences by removing ITMs and UDRs from a plugin, that you know of? For example, is it possible that a mod which is dependent on a prior-loaded plugin would break if an ITM in that plugin is cleaned? If the answer is no, there are no potential negative consequences, then what do you think is a logical reason why Bethesda didn't take the 5 minutes to clean the official DLCs themselves?
@gamerpoets
8 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoy it ThreeSon = ) No. ITM's are just that. Identical to Master. Those records are always going to be in the main plugin of the game. (We're talking about the official DLC, not mods. sometimes mods need them, but its very rare and an author will tell you if that's the case). If you erase them from the dawnguard.esm they still exist in the skyrim.esm . UDR's. No. You are undeleting references and then disabling them. You are making records that don't exist, exist but to still not function. ..Well, Bethesda doesn't have xEdit as funny as that may sound. So it may not be as easy as 5 minutes for them and they are on deadlines. If you've used the creation kit (which I'm sure is a less powerful tool for us to use than what Beth themselves use) you are going to create UDR's and ITM's by the 100's on a daily basis. So they do clean up what they alter but they miss things. What they do miss in most cases doesn't effect the game unless you mod it. In some cases I believe it does though. I can't remember which game, but i believe it was dawnguard providing an ITM that overwrote the update.esm or vise versa that actually caused something Beth wanted in the game to not work as intended. I can't remember how small it was or what it was but I remember reading about it. In the big scheme of things Bethesda's team is 1/10th the size of other teams working on other major games (I read before where assassin's Creed has more than 1000 people working on the game at any given day and that's standard for major companies). At the end of the day they're just going to miss things being as small as they've been, pushing their games as far as they do and being under timelines. It's not taking 5 minutes out of their day, It's taking constant time and fixing things as they go and missing something in the final minutes. They create updates to the games even after it's launched. If these things were issues in most cases they would be fixed but if it's not truly broke it doesn't need to be fixed from their standpoint. Though, as hard as they are pushing mods on Beth.net I wouldn't be surprised to see less of these in the future... then again.. I wouldn't be surprised if I did = ) .. Im sure there's not a single game that doesn't have some form of this within it (Beth or not). We just all stare at Bethesda with a magnifying glass because so many millions or us mod their games. -Michael

My goal is learning how to patch weapons and armors into my overhaul mods, Frost and Horizon,. Any advice or links to videos that would be helpful for that? I really appreciate you guys!

I'd love to see a TES5 tutorial about how to deal with basic conflicts and creating custom patches, I think that would be huge for people and give modders some relief from all the small requests to patch this or that other game- they could just do it themselves and post their patch to help others. It's not hard to do though it is intimidating at first. I could probably record myself in tes5 edit doing a few different kinds of fixes and send it to you, if you think that might make your process any easier. The you could add/remove what you want and do it over in your lovely voice ;)

GamerPoets I mean ultimately there's the FNV Xedit training manual and I think a few videos out there on how to use it, that's how I learned, if people really want it they can figure it out, but it's also probably good for you if they can learn everything all in one place rather than having to click outside the channel for it. I think a lot of it comes down to knowing the mods you're using really well, understanding what they do, because then you can decide what conflicts are fine, what should overwrite what and when you need to patch, and you can't teach people that it requires their own initiative.

You're load order Needs to be in correct order even after the Main Files? I did not clean these files before modding as i didn't expect to go this far and nor did i find these extremely helpful and informative videos before i started modding. It all started with Bethesda net I swear, but i could not help getting sucked into this rabbit hole especially for Skyrim. Hopefully i'll emerge enlightened as well as entertained. My concern is I've Removed the ITM's and UDR's from update.esm unintentionally when clicking the red "X" but not "unchecking" the update.esm in the ":save changes box" before doing so. No backup was created guessing it was not checked by default and i did not ensure i checked the Backup Box before closing the window through bad assumption. The changes were indeed saved as the second time i loaded SSE Edit there wasn't anything to clean after applying filter. So to be sure the job was done correctly i repeated the process i ran the SSE Edit again Starting with ITM's then UDR's to do a proper clean and see if there Were changes to be saved and the window simply closed indicating no change was made causing me to assume it was done completely the first time. With LOOT also confirming there were no longer any ITM's or UDR's in Update.esm. Now i don't believe I've changed the order since then i added Ultimate Dodge and Immersive Armours as for some reason the game would not launch with Immersive Armors and still doesn't thought it might be a UDR or a bad download should have checked the latter first. Order sorted with LOOT, i made some adjustments double checking with a bit from Ultimate Immersion's load order, SEPTIM and some of the mods themselves and the posts, i might have made a mistake along the line so may need to change the order. I plan to add another combat mod and 3 more deadly encounter mods modifying their order. Am i still in the green? or have i past a critical point of no return? if so would it be safe to Verify Game Cache through Steam to restore to the original .esm's as mentioned in Gophers Vid? Would this cause issues with an order installed? Any help from those who are experienced with modding would be greatly appreciated sorry for the long message i know specifics are important.
@gamerpoets
7 жыл бұрын
-Yes, due to the window closing without allowing you to save, the file was in fact clean the first time around, thus, no option was presented to save anything since nothing was changed the second time. -You should be able to clean the official game masters at any point during your modding. I have always done it first, but, undeleting references (UDRs) will only make your game more compatible with mods, not less and ITMS (since they are identical to the skyrim.esm in this case) they will exist anyways and shouldn't cause an issue. -Checking multi guides (I know that SEPTIM is a guide, not sure what Ultimate Immersion is) you may come across variations and many differences. Not everyones guide is the same. We don't all use the same mods or follow the same practices so you could get confused along the way if trying to follow multi guides at once regarding entire load orders. -Verifying cache will reset any files that are in the data folder form the original game back to their vanilla state. I don't see why you would need to do that but you can try it out. You can always place files from the data folder in a backup folder and if the verify cache doesn't work, drop those backed up files back into the data folder and everything will be where you left it pre-verifying cache -If you are adding mods as you play the game you can get issues for many reasons. The mods that you added may not be compatible fully or partially. You may have had issues in your save file already that weren't showing up to you personally until adding those new mods. Once you add a mod to a save file, if you remove it, those saves will always search for those removed mods, potentially causing more issues over time. Mods that don't play well with others can "build up" issues over time. One day everything is great and the next, due to advancing to a certain part of the game, character progression, entering a bugged cell due to a mod that you didn't know was bugged... all of these things can cause issues. (I lost an entire RP series on the channel. Fallout 3... due to a bugged cell and not knowing how to fix it a year or two ago). -Also, if you add immersive armors to your game or other large mods you probably need to run LOOT again to make sure its where its supposed to be. LOOT is right 99% of the time. You still need to know your mods though. Ultimate Dodge sounds like a mod that alters meshes and possible have scripting (idk this for sure but if it does...) and could definitely be incompatible with other mods and cause issues. ... I lost my place lol -Michael

Thank you Micheal I'm relieved to hear that, i'm still testing and building the order piecing it together from different orders or learning about any compatibility issues though their orders, so i'm not worried about losing my save, once everything comes together i can finally put the Nexus away for the play-through. sorry to hear about losing the RP series Fallout 3 would have been an outstanding RP. One of the greatest enhancements you can make to a game is your own imagination, it's made all of my gaming experiences better. I'll have to double check for "Build Up" issues I haven't really thought of those and look into the ultimate dodge mods specifics. Thanks again and for all the work you do in your videos they've been very helpful and I like your Role Play series' what the games are all about. Hope you get a good sleep don't let the blue light interfere with your melatonin.

Hey, great tutorial all around. I'd just like to say one thing that's stopping me from loading the game and is causing CTD on the load-up splash screens before I can access the main menu. I am using Mod Organizer and watched the entire video, re-playing multiple sections for clarity. I had a lot of ITM's on all the DLC's. I fixed them using this guide (excellent guide) but now all of my .esm's are missing. I saw your section on re-adding them from the Overwrite dump file, but after adding just the "Update.esm - Clean" the red overwrite bar is no longer there, and I am unable to add the other needed .esm's to run the game. How do I find those when MO will not let me find them in Overwrite?
@ayyoaugury9438

To add to this, in the Data section of Mod Organizer it says the "mod" it is reading is "Update.esm - Clean" for every one of the DLC esm's. I followed the video to the letter, and am unsure of how to fix this.

Is downloading xEdit from the most recent game nexus page really necessary? I ask because it seems like the xEdit team is updating the other nexus pages as well. I've checked the FO3/4/NV-Edit pages, as well as the Oblivion and Skyrim/SE pages. All were updated on the 27th of December, 2016 (except for Skyrim, which got updated on the first of January 2017). Same story for the actual file- all updated in the 27 of December 2016 around 4:30 to 5:00 (This time excluding Oblivion, which seems to have been uploaded one and a half hours earlier at 2:52) Minor question, I know, but your directions strike me as over-complicated when all the xEdit files are being kept up-to-date. By the way- Keep up the great work! edit: removed the strike-through; it was unintentional.
@gamerpoets
7 жыл бұрын
Well first I would disagree about them being over-complicated = ) There have been plenty times in the past that all mod pages weren't being updated as diligently and someone downloading the file "in between the cracks" would miss out on the updates. Videos also exist longer than we do and we can only hope that the fine fellows at xEdit can continue their pace = ) It also informs the clever that they can download dev builds from offsite and rename the accordingly as well as exposing a feature of xEdit in general while driving home the fact that "xEdit is the same program for every game".... now, what I say in video is said in a lot less words than that = ) No... you don't have to download it from the most recent game.. but.. see what I typed = ) Thank you friend = ) If I didn't see your comment as important I wouldn't have typed all of that. -Michael

Thanks for the clarification. It seems, however, that the 3.2 update to xEdit removed 4 of the 5 .dat files shown in your video. The one that is left depends on where I downloaded the file from; from the fallout 4 page, the fallout .dat was left. From the Skyrim and SE pages, the skyrim .dat remained. From what I can tell by reading the step project wiki guide to xEdit (link at end), those .dat files pertain the the individual game .exe files for records(hence FO4 and Skyrim having different ones, but Skyrim and SSE having the same one) I hope that having the wrong .dat file doesn't break anything, but the mere existence of all of them makes me think otherwise. So my game stability is great now, but I've had an issue for a long time and I still have this issue. I always crash at certain areas in the game. Mountain pass by whiterun, Dragon bridge, if you choose the right path taking you to the mountains after leaving solitude, there are a few more but every time I go there I get a ctd. My solution has always just been to avoid those areas but I just have no idea what's causing it.
@gamerpoets
6 жыл бұрын
Can be various issues. CTDs aren't generally straight forward. -Could be mod conflict (two mods do conflicting things to the same areas.. though that would generally cause crashes on start up)... Load order.. maybe... -More likely cause is some areas may push your Graphics card/memory in general too far due to high res textures or mods that add lots of objects (higher polygon meshes, too) to specific places... addition of anything in an area will push your hardware and or the game engine -If you remove plugins from your load order mid playthrough you can get weird/random issues/corrupted cells -Deleted navmeshes in mods could be a culprit for something like that as well (crashes in specific places) -Michael

GamerPoets I also have another question. I watched your other video about the system requirements to run a modded skyrim se and i have minimum and high in some parts but I'm only getting 20-30 fps. Well,this is timely! I stumble upon this just days after finding out about the 255 mod limit. I'm at 220 now with about 80 waiting,so I'm gonna have to clear some space! I have a related question,though. I'm currently using NMM, roughly 200 mods,over 1000 hours in,and haven't run into any serious problems.However, I've been seeing a lot about NMM going wonky w/large numbers of mods,and I'm wondering "if it ain't broke..." applies here or if it pays at this point to switch to MO.I certainly don't want to switch if I don't need to, but it seems I'm at a point where if I eventually WILL need to,better now than later.So... whaddaya say? Do you think I can get by w/NMM & merged plugins,or have I just been lucky so far?

What is the best and safest way to update TESedit in Mod Organizer? Also do I need to re-clean plugins once I have the newest version installed? thanks for your great effort of making this tutorial but i have one valid important question ? along ago i used to manually check skyrim.esm then update.esm and so on at the beginning before doing anything, but after i watched your method of double clicking i thought it's a bit faster to do so and i did exactly like you but after the entire process it struck me that one plugin only load 2 of them instead of 3 before it, so i got back to check and i found that when you double click on hearthfires.esm plugin at the beginning it only load skyrim.esm and skyrim.exe but not update.esm and i did everything already , is there any risk on the dlc file by not doing all of this with update.esm included , and should i do this specific dlc manually again and include update.esm? by the way i'm using mo2 appreciate any help in advance
