Which goes a long way to understanding the success at Sekigahara. Adams provided Japan with their first true map of the world. He essentially changed the course of Japanese history. He gave Japan the tools they needed to do an end run around the Jesuit/Portuguese trade monopoly. And allowed Japan to be the one Asian Nation that managed to avoid becoming a colony of and subjected to the various European Powers. Adams elevation was not without good reason, from the perspective of Japan. The biggest reason was it was a gilded cage to prevent him from seeking to return to Europe. And it’s all incredibly well documented both from Adams own journals, and from Japanese records of the time.

The AC producers seemed to make a point of not doing any research and disrespecting Japanese culture as much as possible. The Shinobi were neither their own fighter class nor were their deeds deemed lower than the one's of a Samurai as they claim in the trailer. Samurai was a rank, Shinobi was a job (different types of spy work, not a trained fighter class) done by ambassadors, messengers, servants or geishas for example. Samurai sometimes also did assassinations or spy work, therefore they took on the job of a Shinobi. So exactly the opposite of what the AC producers are claiming. A Samurai wouldn't walk through town in his battlefield armor, like he does during the whole game. Also Iga wasn't a secret, hidden village in the mountains, but an important and well known center of commerce with a lot of trade routes. There were no secret Ninja training facilities in the mountains, that's from Batman for heaven's sake. There is not any proof for him to ever have been a Samurai. The only source that states that Yasuke got a house, a stipend, and a sword and various tools from Nobunaga is in the Maeda family's private Library and is a handwritten copy from 1719 from a famous book we know as the Nobunaga Chronicles, the original was lost in a fire. The complete text of said book was never released to the public, only exerpts. However, there are around 70 versions which are more or less copies of the Nobunaga Chronicles from that time but different owners/families, sometimes even they only have a few chapters. And none of the others is even mentioning Yasuke. Every historian with that background also knows that the copies from the early edo era are far more believable than books which have been written sometimes hundreds of years later as with many other events all over the world where we see the same. Especially when looking at the history of those owners/families during that time which mostly happened to be well-known noble or Samurai families. They competed against each other for wealth as well as fame, so of course, the same was true for their very own libraries. And it is also true that many of those claims have been falsified later on because earlier sources stated differently than what they have claimed. This does not mean that every of those sources is wrong or lies by default, but mistakes when copying or exaggerations happened quite a lot and so claims from later should be treated especially carefully. There has not been much or almost no discussion about Yasuke because sources are scarce, so the overall opinion is that he has been historically irrelevant. It is also believed that even the claims of the portuguese who went to Japan are more or less questionable. And after Honnoji-incident, after he got returned to the Portuguese, he was not even mentioned anymore at all. Is that really the definition of a Samurai? And when looking at other well-known Samurais from that time, such as Toyotomi Hideoshi, we also know that they have had 10 years or more being soldiers before being promoted to Samurais. There were other cases of people also having gotten rewards from Nobunaga such as Sumo Wrestlers who entertained him, but those could not even be called Samurai. Nobunaga has been well-known for being a very generous person to people he liked or he was interested in. But this does not mean he would make someone a Samurai. How should a foreigner with almost zero ability in Japanese reach that in a mere 1.5 years of being with Nobunaga? I am not denying the claim itself, because one could say from that specific source that it could have been like that and it, in itself, is a valid hypothesis. However, it is very unlikely and certainly should not be treated as historical fact.

Samurai is both a social class and also a social rank, the equivalent in the West with Knight. As such, I don't see military service as a prerequisite to achieve samurai. The most important factor to being a samurai is birth and secondly, how much the monarchy/lord value your service. If you're born in a samurai family, you're a samurai. If you're not born in a samurai family, then the only way to become a samurai is through service to your lord. In regard to non-Japanese, its possible that the rank of samurai is granted in order to integrate them with the lord's men (Japan being a highly hierarchical society) as well as to facilitate diplomatic relation with foreign powers. Yasuke pretty much have nothing to offer to the Japanese when he arrived in Japan. Being a slave, they know he can't conduct diplomatic relations aside than being an interpreter. So I can't see how Yasuke can become a samurai unless he directly save Nobunaga life during battle.
@Lorekeeper72
Ай бұрын
I'm confident in saying that Yasuke being a Samurai is a provably false hypothesis. For me, it comes down to three main points. 1. Records of Yasuke's deeds and existence are sparse among both the Japanese and the Jesuits who gave/sold him to Nobunaga. Were Yasuke Samurai there would be records of this as we know quite well from the tale of William Adams aka Miura Anjin whose existence and status is well documented. 2. We do not know Yasuke's surname or even if he had one. This is an important point as Samurai was a hereditary position meaning one's children could inherit it so everyone who was Samurai had a surname usually based around the region they controlled. If one was raised to Samurai, they were given a surname as seen again with William Adams who initially was known as Anjin to the Japanese before being made Samurai due to his deeds. 3. Yasuke, despite being directly connected to Nobunaga, survived after Nobunaga was killed. To westerners, this may seem like a minor point but its actually a pretty big deal since it was common for the Samurai retainers of a lord to be killed or be ordered to commit seppuku upon the death of their lord especially during a time of upheaval. This was to prevent the Samurai from seeking revenge which they were expected to do (see the story of the 47 Ronin though this occurred about 100 years later.) For Yasuke to have survived after Nobunaga's death despite being directly in his service strongly suggests he simply was not of high enough status to be considered a threat which means he wasn't Samurai. Taken all together, its readily apparent that Yasuke was not Samurai and no amount of fan fiction and online whining will change that fact. Beyond those who are simply trying to rewrite history for their agendas, I suspect a chunk of those who believe this false narrative do so due to a lack of understanding as to what a Samurai was and I blame media for that; Samurai were warriors, true, but it was much more than that and Japanese society is usually more strict and structured than what were are used to here in the West. Samurai had serious obligations and expectations that they were expected to uphold and dishonoring ones self or ones lord, especially the later, could result in orders for death by seppuku not just for a Samurai but for an entire clan (this was rare but it happened.) For a foreigner with nothing to offer the Japanese except the novelty of his size, strength and skin color to be raised to Samurai within 18 months (longest estimate I've seen for how long Yasuke was in Japan) is basically impossible. Hell, William Adams heavily improved the shipbuilding and naval abilities of the Japanese, fought in several notable battles and acted as an advisor to the shogunate for nearly half a decade before Tokugawa Ieyasu made him Samurai (which Ieyasu did almost certainly to ensure Adams stuck around.)

@@13gan Well, the definition of Samurai has been changing over the history. I am not having had specialized in medieval history of Europe nor knighthood so I cannot make a comparison here, but a Samurai has been, for example, in the Heian era, some sort of retainer for nobles who helped them with their daily duties, up to protecting them. 武士 is the correct term for people who actually fought battles. During the Kamakura era those were the highest ranking Bushi who served the Shogun. However, some of the lower ranking soldiers who served for a long time to those Samurai became 侍品, which meant, they basically acquired the same status, which still has been rare. In the Sengoku era, this definition was not clear and some historians are completely right to put that out. The Sengoku era is also considered to be the only era where 武士 and 侍 were having had the same meaning. Birth was not as important as individual power and a skilfull warrior could become a Samurai too. However what has been made of that historical facts, or rather how they have been twisted to fabricate the Yasuke lie is beyond my understanding. Because even then, military experience or rather commanding experience was mandatory as well as exceptional battle prowess. People who became actual Samurai as lower birth all had a long history of battles. There is no proof about Yasuke having fought in any battle, the only military event he has been included in was the Honnoji incident, where there is no mention of him having had fought.He even gave up his sword willingly to the enemy. And as you said, he had nothing to offer to the Japanese. He could probably only speak a very few words.

Another crucial point is that: if Yasuke was a samurai and one of liegemen close to Nobunaga, when a lord died, he should be killed at the same time or he should commit seppuku himself. But it's written in the Jesuit Annual Report of Japan that 'Mitsuhide Akechi (who rebelled against Nobunaga) said "This black guy is a beast (not a human), he doesn't know anything (about our war), and he's not Japanese, so I won't kill him" and let Yasuke go, saying, "Leave him with an Indian priest". For this, Yasuke was sent to Nanban-temple and saved his life.' As a samurai, sacrificing your life for your lord was considered the highest honor during the era. Compared to that, how could Yasuke be a samurai, since he begged for his life?

He is twisting the complexities of the Japanese language to fit his own interpretations. For example, the word "黒"(black) in Japanese can be read as both "kuro" and "koku." There are many words that sound like "kuro" but have different meanings, such as "玄人" (kurouto), "苦労" (kurou), and "蔵人" (kuroudo). He seems to be misleading those who don't know Japanese into thinking that anything that sounds like "kuro" refers to the color black. The word "黒人" (black man) is pronounced "kokujin." Meanwhile, "国人" (kokujin) refers to the people living in a particular region. Although they sound the same, their meanings are different. A recent example of this confusion is when UBI displayed Zoro's sword from "One Piece" at their Assassin's Creed booth. They probably searched for and purchased an "Oda Katana," thinking it was Oda Nobunaga's sword. However, it turned out to be "尾田"(oda) as in "尾田栄一郎"(Eiichiro Oda), the creator of One Piece, not "織田"(oda) as in "織田信長"(Oda Nobunaga). lol

Toyotomi Hideyoshi was Nobunaga’s successor, so it was still the same clan. And I think “refers to an object” doesn’t mean they were referring to a person as a possession. They were referring to “black fragrance” or incense being traded because the description of this Kurohou sounds more like describing an object than a person. So it says that Lockley misinterpreted it to mean black person, which might refer to Yasuke’s successor. @@fang4223 no I think that means from the words used, it would be more logical that Kurohou refers to an object rather than a person. In Japanese, they would use determiners and quantifiers differently for objects, animals and people. For example, one object may be “i-ko” “ichimai” “ippon” etc depending on the shape of the object. One animal would be “ippiki” and one person would be “hitori.” They would also use “Kore” as “this” for object, but not for animals or people. (Note, of course, that the text is probably from an ancient Japanese way of speaking, but they would know the equivalent terms.) Even though, as you said, Yasuke may have been looked at more as a novelty or entertainer, he was still the daimyo’s attendant who hadn’t fallen out of favor with the lord. They won’t change these descriptive ways in the text just because he was black, because that would be inaccurate and bad grammar, and they would have had no reason to do so. Is this true? In the No.1 "Undated Letter from Kato Kiyomasa" (addressed to Shimokawa Matazaemon and others) of the Kurima Family Documents (P00101), the term "Kurobo" appears in a description related to Toyotomi Hideyoshi's invasion of Korea. Additionally, in the NHK BS4K program "Black Samurai: Yasuke, the African Samurai Who Served Nobunaga" broadcast on March 30, 2021, Dr. Lockley Thomas, an associate professor at Nihon University, mentioned that this "Kurobo" mentioned in the document might be none other than Yasuke, the Black samurai who served Oda Nobunaga. At the Archives, we were surprised by Dr. Thomas's suggestion, as we had never previously recognized this "Kurobo" as a Black person. In fact, even if this "Kurobo" is not Yasuke, there has been a hypothesis that it could be referring to a Black person (as noted by Gakusho Nakajima in "Late 16th Century Kyushu and Southeast Asian Trade," Shigaku Zasshi, Vol. 118-8, among others). However, since this term only appears in one location in the document, it is difficult to make a definitive judgment at this point. For instance, the term "Kurobo" also appears in The Tale of Genji, but there it means "Kuroho" (a type of scented incense) and is frequently seen in Japanese classical literature. Furthermore, after reviewing the document at the Archives, some staff members have expressed the opinion that it would be more natural to interpret "Kurobo" as referring to an object rather than a person. Based on the above, the current position of the old document section at the Archives is that it is difficult to immediately conclude that "Kurobo" refers to a Black person.

I'd say that this problem isn't just about UBI games. For example, on Wikipedia, not only Yasuke's article, but also English articles such as "Samurai" and "Black people in Japan" cite Thomas Lockely's fabricated story as if it were true history. Almost all of the other quotes/citations in these pages(Serge Bilé'a book, articles on BBC, CNN, Time, The Smithsonian...) are similarly misleading ppl to believe in false stories as if they are true stories, since they are also more or less based on/inspired by Lockely's fabrications. In addition to the lie that ”Yasuke was a legendary samurai" or "Yasuke ultimately achieved a top rank of samurai”, there are also a number of extremely problematic lies that are written as if they were true, such as "black slavery was prevalent in Japan in that era''. This is a severe blasphemy against Japan's history and culture, and there is a risk that it could develop into an ideological issue that could raise diplomatic concerns ( IMO, it already has been developed) . This vicious conspiracy must be blocked immediately.

I'd like to point out that if you play Ghost of Tsushima with Japanese language and English subtitles, they don't call him a "Ghost" they call Jin "Kurōdo" or "Dark Person" as in he's some kind of wraith in the night, an dark spirit come to protect the land from the Mongol invasion. Jin is VERY MUCH a Japanese man and not a Black man at all like Lockley would have said....it sounds to me like Lockley took the fact that the word for "Black" in Japanese is "Kuro" and ran with that to try and frame in his White Guilt ridden mind that it had to mean a Black man was LITERALLY a Black man. It always seems to be the people screaming about "colonization" and all that jazz seem to be the MOST willing to "colonize" another country by rewriting their history to suit a "Modern Audience" and take away everything that makes that country unique.

Thanks for addressing Thomas' lies as well! The only last record of Yasuke is that he was sent to Nanbanji Temple after the Honnoji Incident. After that, there is no record of Yasuke. I don't understand why he thought Yasuke was in the army at the time of the Korean invasion. Our ancestors were record lovers to begin with, and if Yasuke had participated in the war as Yasuke, I am sure they would have recorded that Yasuke was there. Because no matter how you look at it, if there was a Yasuke among the Japanese, he would stand out.

Why couldn't they just use Hattori Hanzo or the like? An actual samurai and onmitsu who is deified in Japan? Yasuke was in Japan for only a few years tops, he couldn't even speak the language. He was essentially kept around due to being an oddity. Let alone if he'd been a true samurai he would have committed seppuku when Oda Nobunaga died as per the code of the samurai. To refuse such was deemed dishonorable. He didn't, he handed in his katana and was taken out of Japan by the same Jesuits he'd arrived with. We don't even know what happened to him afterwards.

Here is a suggestion as to what they could've made the story when it comes to Yasuke. Yasuke is a member of the Assassins Order who have come halfway across the world with important information for the Japanese division, this would "give a reason" to why he's there and still make him an important part, WITHOUT making him the protagonist, he would also be an important teacher to the protaginist, teaching them "techniques from far away lands". But that would make sense and dosen't cater to THE MESSAGE, so of course they would never do something like that. And I would've made the protagenist a player customised "faceless" character (but with limited options, since they HAVE to look japanese), this would also make it easier to give it co-op options.

Good effort on the romanji pronunciations. If you ever want to polish up pronounciations: Gunma = Goon-mah Matazaemon = Mah tah Zah-eh Mon I put dashes in between for where the syllables should break up. Incidentally, Kurohou = The "u" at the end is meant to extend and put a subtle yet slight emphasis on the "o" sound. It's why you sometimes see translations use two "o"s in some words. As for "Kurohou" meaning Black Fragrance/pasteurized incense...did Lockley assume "kurohou" referred to a person (with zero evidence that it was or wasn't), and was black because "Kuro" literally translates to "black"? If so, that is so racist. _Grasping at straws._ I guess by that logic, future historians can safely assume Hollywood actor Jack Black to be African too...or "dusk" itself with how ambiguous what "kurohou" was referring to.

Kuro means black, but I couldn't find any reference to "ho" or kuroho". If there are any Japanese out there, I would love a more detailed explanation. Saying that, one word can have many meanings in the Japanese language, it really depends on the words around it for the meaning.
In modern times, two descriptions are used for the "黒方(kurohou or kurobou)" of incense: "黒芳" and "黒方". It seems that the notation in the historical records of Gunma was "黒芳". "芳" means scent. As for the notation of "黒方", the theory of "黒方" in @user-LM4ZR7LV4X Mr./Ms. is also quite conceivable.

Depending on the source, the exact insult is different, but in one the person is called "black hearted"/a coward and in the other compared to a yoki. Ara Japanese Uniquely Better than Americans, and Europeans, And Africans, and other Asians that they wouldn't discriminate? Or, would they likely treat an African slave similar to how the people that brought them to Japan(Portuguese) most likely treated them? It's a really simple question that reveals the biases of the one asked. Are ALL "POC" the same? Yasuke was a NOVELTY. A dancing monkey, or a bear on a tricycle. Said that before somewhere else; two things are important to keep in mind when discussing this mess: 1. infamous Thomas Lockeley wrote TWO seperate books on Yasuke - one in japanese actually where he takes a very accademic approach on the matter pointing out the lack of information and the various possibilities of interpretation AND the later book, his FICTIONAL approch in english where he goes of and beyond fantasising about Yasuke. Lockeleys mistake was not to point out that his english book is PURE fiction, a fantasy about "the black Samurai". But instead he deliberatly mislead poeple to believe this english book is based on facts. 2. pay attention to the historical information we know: Nobunaga was interested in Yasuke BUYING him of off the SLAVE market. Here comes THE most important question: why did Nobunaga buy him ... most likely because he was exotic aka a vanity, someting to "show of" with. Nobunaga might have treated Yasuke well and used him as a warrior, think about it, average Japanese 160-maybe 170cm tall vs Yasuke 180-190 cm tall. Pretty impressive. The main issue with all of this is two things: Lockeley misleading the people about his Yasuke-fantasy and the black as well as the media community WANTING to force "African-American" into Japanese history. These two groups wanted to believe in the black Samurai, that's why they didn't ask question until "Assassins Creed: Crapows". Last but not least we never asked ourself how Yasuke viewed himself, right. Did he consider himself a free man, rbel agaist the system or did Yasuke acccept his status of being a slave, enjoying the opportunity of living a better live with Nobunaga and hence devoted himself to same?
