In winter, Norway fully lives up to its image as a northern and harsh Scandinavian land. And even in its southern parts, the thermometer periodically drops below zero, and precipitation falls with snow, covering the marine archipelagos of the islands with “sugar glaze”.
But the magic of a couple dancing over the sea happens only occasionally when the waters of the Oslofjord meet a cyclone that brings the icy and piercing breath of the Arctic.
This is truly a magical and mesmerizing sight, which is rare in the south of Norway, as the difference in sea and air temperatures usually does not exist. The wind often blows over the sea and prevents the formation of a dancing couple or mixing it in a homogeneous fog.
In the first days of January, the “Breath of the Arctic” in the Østfold region was felt especially strongly, a lot of snow fell and the temperature on one day dropped as low as -30 degrees.
Of course, we could not sit quietly in the warmth of our home, as all the residents of the region did. After all, we would have missed the magic of the Arctic frost, and without catching it in our lenses, we would not have shared it with you.
Having dressed as warmly as possible (or rather, wearing everything that could be worn and fastened at the same time! :)), having charged the batteries of the equipment, we set out on a journey through the archipelago of the picturesque islands of Hvaler and the city of Fredrikstad.
The drone complained about the low temperature of the battery, the tripod became frosty, and the camera lens was covered with ice crystals flying through the frosty air. The equipment that served us faithfully for many years completely refused to work in such conditions.
Also, our hands immediately froze when in contact with the equipment, even with gloves, and we had to come up with different ways to quickly charge the batteries and warm up the equipment to continue filming.
But there was no extra time at all; all this happened during a short January daylight with the sun very low above the horizon. But this is precisely what gave the steam dance over the fjord and the Glomma River extraordinary shades, and at the end of the day, we were rewarded with an enchanting sunset over the city of Fredrikstad.
In this video, we proudly invite you to spend one icy January day with us in the Hvaler archipelago and the city of Fredrikstad and see with your own eyes what the breath of the Arctic looks like!
We hope you enjoy the video, because these are the islands on which we live, our way home across the sea, as well as our most beloved city in Norway. Well, now we have a clear understanding of what extreme shooting is. But we think it was worth it, and this video walk will take pride of place in the personal achievements of our channel!
Thank you very much for traveling with Us! Feel free to ask your questions and write your wishes in the comments, we are always pleased to read them! ;)
And if you want to support us or treat us to a cup of hot chocolate on such cold filming days, then follow this link and become a member of our channel’s club! We will be extremely grateful to you! :)
