Hi Christina, love your channel! Since on the topic of baggage (not sure if you’ve ever given this tip) When checking in luggage for a flight, a good idea is to place a piece of paper on the inside listing your full itinerary (flights, hotels, etc) plus your contact info. Airport baggage conveyor systems are very complex and baggage tags CAN and DO get caught & ripped off. When an agent finds a tagless bag, they open it and catalogue the contents in the computer - then when you make a missing bag claim, the computer tries to find a match - this can take some time. But if when they open the bag and find your itinerary - they know EXACTLY where it’s supposed to be! Just a tip from an insider (experienced airline manager 😉)

This is THE best and most current and relevant video I have watched so far! It is exactly what I’ve been looking to find for validation. I leave for Europe to travel around for 5 weeks flying in and out of different countries from Germany to France to Rome to Croatia to Poland, Austria and back to Germany. I was freaked out about the baggage restrictions for each airline! Pure panic attacks! Finally I took the airline with the strictest baggage allowance, searched the internet for the smallest and lightest carry on AND personal belonging and finally found it. I thought maybe I was going overboard but now I’m glad I went to all that trouble. Now the challenge is to pack LIGHT LOL. And I did buy a luggage scale and I will be taking it with me. Thank you for all your videos! They have helped me greatly in planning my trip😊

Yep, in the line at Chicago ORD, Air France has a little spot to measure and weigh your bag. It looked optional, but I did it as I walked the line. I took that chance, and both personal items and carryon were at-weight and at-dimension. I actually bought my bag specifically for Air France dimension limits. It felt good to see my planning pay off.

Every flight I have been recently (in north america) most people have only a carry on, since airlines started to charge ridiculous fees for checked bags. And then there's no space on the plane and they check your carry on for free. I agree that reinforcing the carry on weight will likely become the norm because that will force people to pay for the checked bag one way or another.

@@HappytoWanderthe problem is they started to sell tickets without luggage. Years ago in 1970ties an 1980ties zl tickets included baggage so there was no problem but airlines misplaced luggage and passengers lost their luggage due this passebgers would trzvel with only carry one. Now 80% of the passengers zre buying a ticket without baggage an traveling with carry on but if 80% of the travelers bring a carry on thzn all those carry on's can not in the overhead bin znd the airline is loosing money. In some planes there is only place for about 70 till 90 piece czrry on in the cabin. Ex: if you have a plane with a capacity of 90 carry on's in the bin and you have 162 seats in economy and 80% is bringing a carry on trolley than there are 129 carry on's and you have only space for 90 carry on's. In the future and this hzppens already I think with low cost airlines they weight and charge you at the gate.

I recently bought the July light carryon, at 3.9 pounds. This will make flying over to Australia and New Zealand with their strict size and weight limits feasible. I’ve owned a digital scale for weighing luggage for quite some time. The added benefit of lighter luggage is that it also is easier to handle. I’m a solo traveler in my 70’s and lifting a lighter piece of luggage into an overhead compartment on the plane is definitely easier! I plan on also checking a piece of luggage. My research showed that domestic flights within Australia had a smaller linear allowance for checked luggage, so am packing using the strictest limits in mind. Packing Merino shirts, quick dry tops and shorts, and linen. Planning on doing laundry since I’ll be gone a month and a half.

I love having that option so that can buy toiletries at my destination and pack them along with my larger shoes, etc., when I move from hotel to hotel. Then, I can through the unused toiletries away when I head home - or expand the bag and check the bag for the return flight. I generally travel for 3 to 5 weeks, so that works for me.

The American airlines have never had a weight restriction for carry-on bags. I wonder if this will change, though. When I flew Delta recently, they had a new guideline saying that you had to be able to place your own carry-on in the overhead space by yourself. Note that I am vertically-challenged, and can't even reach the overhead space on some planes. I don't usually have a problem, though, because people are so nice. When they see me try, someone usually offers to help. On the Delta flight, though, the flight attendant was right by me and told me that he wasn't supposed to help - but he did. I dare say that they wouldn't want me to stand on the seat in order to stow my bag.

For many years I have traveled carryon only. This was even before all these restrictions and weighing. I would like to check a bag and so far the cost isn’t my issue. The issue is delayed bags! One trip my husband finally got one of his bags after we returned home. We have been two weeks in Italy and received bags the night before our departure home. Once we were told our bags were in the “gray area”. When asked what this was they said they didn’t know where the bags were. They eventually turned up. When on tours there is usually always someone without luggage. Now we have those luggage trackers even in our carryons. Getting there is a pain. Once there, it is most enjoyable.

Sorry that you had this experience but I must say, on some level this makes my day because I travel regularly internationally and am constantly amazed with the size and weight of bags that people get on planes with! I travel for 3-4 months every year taking July’s carry on light expandable but even with that small bag, I know it’s going to be over weight so I always check it. I’m not someone who freaks at checking luggage. So if carryon was regularly weighed and measured, then maybe fewer people will be lugging those massive suitcases onto the plane! Sorry, but have to be honest in this regard! Cheers from Australia

I notice this only happens in France. In smaller airport, it's even worse. They ask you to pull out your stuff and put it on the tray. Like literally check your liquid. But in Rome, nope. They don't even ask you to pull out your electronics. Everything should be INSIDE YOUR BAGS. We made a longggg line in Lourdes, France. And most people behind me complain how slow the workers are. Only one person who checks it and she looks like a new one doing the job. I can say this because I ve been to many big airports before and France is so damn slow and lame lol

Someday airlines will weigh you and your luggage and charge you by the kilogram/pound. Bottom line is the more an aircraft weighs, the more fuel it’ll burn. If that added weight (and more fuel burned) is caused by excess passenger weight, the airlines will want to be compensated.

Lufthansa out of Toronto is ruthless with weighing carry-on luggage, although my personal item (small knapsack) was not weighed. Lufthansa business class does not weigh carry-on, if you are fortunate to travel that way. I weighed everything beforehand, swapped out as necessary, and met the weight restriction. I noticed that Aer Lingus also weighs carry-on. So far, I've found that Air Canada allows carry-on on the premise that if you can lift it and stow it, and need no assistance, then you're good to go.

My cousin was stopped and told to go through another line and so I followed and an employee started weighing all of our carry on bags/personal items and was about to make us pay until he looked at my boarding pass. I had upgraded to business class and so he told me I was fine and since she was with me he let my cousin past without paying too. It caught us off guard. Also, we were kind of annoyed because we had already checked our big bags in at the desk and my cousin had to pay extra for that being a bit overweight. We learned our lesson about overpacking though, I'm going to try my best to make sure I never have to pay extra on my bags.

They start charging for checked bags, then they get angry at us for trying to do carry-on, and start charging for carry-on, and then they start forcing us to check the bag at the gate because everyone is trying to do carry-on only, and they could have just included checked bags from the beginning for them to comp a free checked bag now... so a*** backwards.

Iberian Air, flight from MAD - JFK, on 2024.06.16, the carrier noticed that some people seemed to wear padded jackets or vests, and made the passengers weigh the vests, plus rollon carry luggage, and then scanned their boarding pass. The max combined was 10 KG for Econ. The Econ plus, which was really like a water down version of business class, were allowed 13 kg their roll on suitcase, and did not have any article weighed, that I could see. Economy was allowed two freechecked bags, and gate checked bags were free. online, economy was only supposed to get one free, checked bag. This suspected passengers were indeed padding, jackets, and articles of clothing. They were all unrelated.

In June of 2022 we had our carry on bags weighed in Istanbul. They didn't weigh our personal bags just the carry on and put a tag on it saying it was ok. I believe the weight limit was 7kg but I'm not certain. I was super paranoid and I had luggage scale and moved stuff between the two bags until we met the limit and was glad I did. We had a large checked bag so it was easier to make the weight limits. I had all our toiletries, pjs, swimwear and three days of clothes in the carry incase our checked bag got lost. Which one of them did but it was ok because we had all the important stuff and enough clothes.

I think it's mainly Americans who are shocked by the hand luggage rules. They've been in place for many years in many countries. The first time I encountered it was in Dubai about 10 years ago where the combined weight of hand luggage & personal items had to be 7kg or less. Regional Spain also checks as does regional Asia. In Australia, for overseas trips they usually don't check unless you have attitude, but domestic travel does. A few times I've flown to Dallas/Ft Worth then onto LA & everyone at Ft Worth was getting weighed & charged (I don't remember the airline), but because I had booked my full trip from Australia, it was an all-inclusive allowance all the way. Of course you can buy toiletries at your destination, but you can also dispense some into tiny containers to tide you over for at least the first day. With batteries, invest in 1 with a high capacity and you can slip it into your jeans pocket when getting weighed then pop it in your bag when going through screening. Gadgets tend to be heavy so instead of a phone + kindle + tablet + ipad, + laptop + camera evaluate what is really necessary & what will meet multiple needs.

The push back has already begun. In the EU, charging extra for cabin luggage is illegal (according to ECJ ruling C-487/12 from 2014), because it violates passenger rights based on EU regulation nr. 1008/2008. This year, Spain fined several airlines and ordered some airlines to stop this illegal practice. The airlines disagree and announced that they will appeal. So far, none of the airlines seem to have changed their luggage rules. Some seem to be tightening the enforcement of these conditions. Spanish consumer rights watchdog FACUA announced that it will file complaints against several other airlines which are in breach of this regulation. Since there is already a clear ECJ ruling, the airlines appeal will probably fail and in the end they will be forced to refund the illegal charges. In the meantime, make sure that you keep the receipts and bills for these extra charges, so you can apply for refunds later.

At Munich, as we were boarding at the gate, the agent pulled us over to size check and weigh our carryon suitcases. Lucky we were within both the weight and size limit. Our personal items (backpacks) were not checked or weigh. The agent was eyeballing everyone’s carryons as we were boarding and if the carryon looked big/overweight, she would ask them to put it in the sizer. We flew back from Rome, again with Lufthansa. At the Rome airport, our carryons were fine. In Munich, there was a sizer with the scale there right at the entrance of the boarding gate. That flight was delayed for about 45mins, so the agent did not ask to size check or weigh the carryons. I think if the plane was on time, she would have asked to weigh people’s carryons.

We had our carry-ons weighed at CDG in 2021....We were flying back to Canada with WestJet. I just packed for a 16nt mixed climate cruise + 3 days in London beforehand and for 3 of us, we have 3 med/large suitcases and 2 carry-on bags.

Hi Christina :) Love your videos! I'm currently working on a video that is similar in it's editing style and you have been a great inspiration. Can I ask where you usually get your music and which songs you are using? I think I can hear some music in the background, if I'm not wrong. :) Thank you!

When I travel Lot carry on only, I don't have to weigh anything at all, but when I traveled Lot with a checked bag I had to weigh my carry on as well as my checked bag, and I'm so glad I had a personal item because my carry on was juuuust at the limit.

Do you know if this is the same for business class as well?

It depends on the airline but when I traveled Lot Premium Economy, the express check in line had both PE and Business people in it, and we all had our carry ons weighed.

tbh you dont reall need luggage scale if you have regular scales at home. just weigh yourself first, then weigh yourself again holding your bag and then just subtract, or even better if you can fit your luggage on the scales

My carry-on got weighed in Vienna on Austrian. I expected it because they sent you emails before hand, but there were people who were 2-3kg overweight and they still let them take it on, so the entire idea is moot and ridiculous.

I have had this happen, usually if you are premium economy or higher then you don’t have to go through this. But now your ticket is more expensive!!

The EXACT same thing happed to me on Air France leaving CDG on May 19, 2024. I travel frequently in Europe and was totally surprised when this happened. I also ended up having to check my carry on bag for a fee. I thought it was just a new Air France policy and in the future I’d avoid this by flying a different airline… but I have a feeling you may be right about this becoming a standard thing in the future…

Hi Cristina, On my TAP Portugal flight from Barcelona to Lisbon in April 2024 both my carry-on and purse were weighed. The weight limit for these items is 8 kg (17 lbs), but mine totaled 20 lbs. As a result, they checked in my carry-on for free. But for my peace of mind I took out my prescription meds and medical equipment.

Sadly, this is going to become more and more common because of all those people who take carry on only, because the bags people are taking are getting heavier. You see it all over KZitem where people are like 'how I pack for 4 months with just a carry on!' and with more people taking increasingly heavier carry on bags airlines have no choice but to start weighing them for safety reasons

It ain’t for safety reasons. It’s more a greed reason. Honestly whatever you can fit in a carry on is what they should allow. It’s not like a carry on morphs into a full luggage size. It’s a carry on size.

I’ve always checked a bag and will. It’s included with my airline status and I purchase fares if flying within Europe that includes a checked bag. I am not hassling with all of this just easier to check a bag to me and I havre room for shopping 😊

Frankly this is just all about money. If they actually cared about weight the limits would be pounds per passenger, including the passenger. The person behind her that weighs 350lbs was fine with a 4lb personal item. Airlines just need to charge the rates they need to charge for the flights instead of penalizing at the airport.

Totally agree. It makes sense to have a limit for the carry-on suitcase since they take space and that is challenging when a flight is full. Just trying to find space for it does take time. But the personal item goes under the seat and it weighs the same whether it is in the belly of the plane or at your feet. This is just to make money. Norwegian has a limit for the total of your personal item and carry-on but I haven’t experienced that they actually checked. I will definitely avoid Air France!

I live in Australia and it's mind boggling to me that it's not common to have your carry on luggage weighed haha For domestic flights its uncommon for them to NOT weigh 😂 I've just finished booking our upcoming Europe trip and we don't have many flights so we decided to just check our bags and not be stressed about weights. plus more room for souveniors in a larger suitcase 🤪

Wow, your videos will be so helpful to those that don't travel that often, and as a frequent traveler, I can say that you hit the points to be aware of in 2024. My wife and I never check bags in our over 70 countries but the bag weight restrictions have caught us off guard recently with a few airlines so your video is spot on.

I am glad airlines are getting stricter about carry on size and weight. So many people abuse the carry on restrictions and make it difficult for everyone that comply. Pay extra for being over the weight and measurements limits or check the luggage. Is that simple!

Thank you for sharing this information. If airlines expect us to be weighed, they should show proof of the airline inspections. Also I cannot believe that the weight is visible for everyone to see. Why are we being punished for airlines stupidity?

I take one checked bag, one carry on suitcase and one crossbody. The carry on suitcase contains mostly spare clothes in case my checked bag gets delayed.

This happened to me in CDG in April. Air France pulled me out with my carry on and camera bag and had me step on the scale. I tried stuffing things into my pockets but I could never get under 12kg. I had to check the larger carry on but fortunately they did not charge me for it. Maybe that's a new thing? I've flown Air France several times in the past few years and that has never happened before.

Traveling by plane is not pleasant anymore. I used to love traveling by plane, but the space is smaller in Economics class; you cannot move in your seat practically. I still need money for business. The company charges everything; my son-in-law paid for the soda and peanut package. I saw a video about how they started to create a problem with your neck, pillow, and blanket. You have a purse or a neck pillow. Also, I was with my wallet and necklace to make the security check, and I would return to my backpack. The employee told me I needed to choose my bag or the wallet. I put it inside my backpack, and she didn't do anything.

How many kilos was your luggage overweight? I am a backpack traveller and the load invariably stays under 12 kg. My carry-on bag has been weighed many times at different airports in Europe, Africa, and Asia. However, I was never charged a penny. I guess 2 kg over the limit is negligible for them. Only last week my bag was weighed at New Delhi, India. Total weight was 7.2+2.6, 1.8 kilos over the limit of 8 kg. The lady at the counter reported it to her superior who just smiled and waved.

Just travelled Jet Star in New Zealand and they weighed everyone's carry on bag and handbag/personal item at the gate. Their allowance is only 7kg! A number of people had to pay extra. I heard Air New Zealand is also now doing this.

Hi Christina and cheers from Montreal! To be quite honest, I am not in the least bit surprised. I experienced the same with ITA airways from BRU to FCO and fortunately my carry-on was safe with me, as I weigh my carry-on with small portable scale before flights. I met an off duty flight attendant who was deadheading home and he told me that the main reason is there are more and more PAX with carry-ons, that overhead bin space is not always sufficient. Also was the fact that many try to cheat by various ways for weight to avoid paying luggage fees, which I will not mention. Airlines are aware of all the social media videos on the subject and will take measures on certain flights to make sure passengers are not cheating their way out of luggage fees if they don't respect the bagage requirements. Safe travels and keep up the great content!

A few years ago flying from SFO - MUC on Lufthansa. Staff walked down the line of folks waiting to board the plane and took bags that they thought were too large for carry on. They placed them in the sizing box & if it didn’t fit they tagged your “carry on” for check in. It was entertaining to see folks get PO about it. Like you said. The airlines clearly state the weight and dimensions allowed.

My biggest tip was always to not check my bag until I got to my gate, because more often than not, the plane will be full and they’ll be taking offers to have people check their bags for free. I got out of Milwaukee and Tampa with free checked luggage this way Looks like that might not be the case in years to come though…

I also thought the airlines wouldn't weigh the carry-ons, but this month when I flew from Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) to Penang (also Malaysia), they also weighed everyone's carry-ons before you went on to security :( but I guess it also depends on the staff, sometimes when the weight is a tiny little bit over (maybe 0.5 kg), they will still let you pass.

I say waive the weight limit. If the person is able to lift up their luggage and hold for a minute they should be allowed to bring it on the plane. My biggest complaint and what slows down onboarding is lots of people who need assistance to put the carry one in the over head bins. Obviously elderly and physical disable should be exempt
